i did a bit of research and still feel a little clouded on the matter. im looking at buying a car from victoria and i live in nsw. the car has rego til may in vic. what i wanna know is what will be the most economical way of doing the transfer. some say hand the plates in, others have all sorts of stories.

i wanna do it in the cheapest way possible, if i were to drive the car back on victorian rego, will i get any refund if i hand the plates in in nsw? or does it have to be the previous owner? am i able to just transfer rego as per normal into my name? or will it have to be re-registered in nsw for me to transfer the car into my name? i would really like to utilize the rego left on it some how if possible.

i hate the rta.

Drive it back no probs but rego is non transferable between states and you wont get a refund only way LEGALLY to my knowledge to get the most out of the rego is not to transfer it before the 3 weeks the RTA gives you and make sure its in good nick as it will need to be put over the pit (blue slip) to get NSW rego!

so theres pretty much no way for me to have the remaining rego in my name? youd think that there should just be some sort of check on the car, like a blue slip, but the remaining rego is still useable as long as it passes the check.

if say i didnt transfer the car in the rta's time frame, would there be any chance of getting in trouble of i got pulled over by cops? could they use the fact the car isnt in my name (or anyones) to screw me over some how?

I bought my car from Vic.

Transfer it into your name in NSW, at which time you'll be asked to hand over the VIC plates and you'll get a receipt.

There's a form on the VICRoads website - fill this out, send with above receipt, and you'll get a refund on the remaining VIC rego. They sent me a cheque. Easy.

NSW is a tough state to swap into.

i swapped my qld registered car to nsw just before xmas, and it was far from easy..

i will NEVER do it again.

- had to fill out the required paperwork

- had to have the car weighed at a special weigh centre

- had to show proof of purchase and current qld RWC

- had to show receipt for 12 months CTP insurance (wich was f**kin stupid, as the car was already full comp insured in qld, and my insurer was fine for me to change my address with them, and keep my current policy.. BUT NSW are a bit back the front with insurance.. as far as i can gather you need CTP, even if you have full comp as well!!??)

- had to have the car put over the rta pits for inspection, and pass (again, annoying, as i had to have a valid qld RWC)

- then finally had to buy 12 months NSW rego.

so all in all, i spent a fair chunk of money, had days without my car, had to run around like a blue arsed fly, and had to have 12 months rego on it, when all i could afford was 6. from what i was told, this has been implemented fairly recently, to try and combat interstate re-birthing and things of that nature.

IMHO if you can, dont buy interstate. or if you like the sound of doing all that ive said above (this applys to anyone wanting to change it interstate, not just me) than strat yourself in and go for it!

what the guys above said doesnt sound to bad, and makes sense. if you cash in your previous rego, its just like getting a car registered in nsw from scratch. it sounds like you had a real tosser of a person at the RTA to make you go through all that man.

maybe it would have been easier for you to just cash your old rego in and then do nsw rego from scratch? blue slip, new plates etc. or is that not allowed?

i was planning to do what the guys said before, just cash the old rego in and then go from scratch in nsw.

whether you are swapping your rego from another state to NSW, or registering an un-registered vehicle (i.e "cashing in your old rego and starting from scratch"), the process is still exactly the same as how i have previously stated.

no, i didnt get a 'tosser' at the RTA, this is now the process, and everyone must do it.

To be perfectly honest, i dont know why you dont just contact the RTA and ask them, rather than a random Internet forum??

i wasnt trying to have a go at you dude, but just the way you wrote what you had to do sounded like you had to go to real extreme measures, like the weigh center for instance...

i bought a car from vic, all i had to do was:

-get a blue slip (usually in nsw you need to do this if your car has been out of rego for three or more months, if your just renewing yearly you have to do a pink slip every year)

-pay CTP (green slip), which has to be done before you can pay for the registration at rta in nsw with every car

-go to rta, show proof of purchase, which in my case was the paper work from vic roads showing i bought the car etc

-cash in old plates and rego, get brand new nsw rego. and then i was all good to go.

reason i was asking people on here is because you really do get mixed answers from rta. sometimes they are willing to help you out, other times they wont and will send you on some wild goose chase that could have been avoided at other times (atleast with my experiences).

very weird they made you get 12 months rego as well, i was under the impression you could get 6 months whenever, as long as the blue slip/pink slip was valid.
