Recently my power steering rack boot started leaking. It's not a really bad leak.

I took it to a power steering specialist and without putting it up on the hoist they said that it will need a re-build and it would cost ($750 parts + 450 labour) = $1200

Does this sound correct? It seems like alot to pay for just a seal or hose leaking.

Do I have any other options?

as its not that bad yet, try draining the fluid and filling with nulon power steering stop leak conditioner.

i've read up on this and if its a minor leak, it will generally stop it from leaking.

mine is leaking very little as well and gonna try the stop leak this weekend.

If it's leaking, it generally means the oring seals inside the rack have seen better days.

Sooner or later it will need to be rebuilt/replaced. I'd probably just by a good second hander and put new boots etc onto it.

It's a factory fault with the rack, the seal is prone to destroying itself unfortunately.

I've had racks rebuilt over the years only to start leaking again 2-3 years later.

Some do, some don't.

If it's not bad, then just leave it for now IMO and don't do it until you absolutely have to do it.

The more expensive place might actually be modifying the rack, rather than simply rebuilding. You can apparently mod the seal so it is less prone to failure.

Unsure of what that involves etc. I'd imagine it would make repairs more expensive.

Interesting, definitely worth a try - thanks for the info mate.
