Im helping a friend look for a Mustang, going to look at some soon

Thing Is I dont know much about them..

I dont think they,re after anything in particular just something cool and in good condition for cruising not racing it..Convertibles are cool..

If anyone has any hints tips on things to look for or even knows of any good ones up for sale..

I would appreciate the imput

rust!!!!!!

back and front windscreen, 1/4 panels and around the subframe.

if you can, try to buy a west coast car not a east coast car (east coast has snow which means salt)

water + salt + car = rust.

also be very careful of ''missing parts'', while the mustang is very popular and most parts are made for most models, not everything is made and can be quite hard to get ahold of.

And if you need parts then you can gettem from the states direct as importers here seem to add alot to the price + 1 on the rust, if its around the front windscreen area then the panel below the windscreen will have to be cut out/repaired and that wilbe expensive in labour $$$(leaking screen may also mean rusted floorpans). . .a bloke at work is finding all this out the hard way

As for missing parts and buying spares, I have no idea of a mustang specific repro parts mob in the usa, but the aftermarket support for my less popular chev nova is huge!

company called dynacorn sells the repro shells . . . .beware of non genuine parts as they are cheap for a reason. .ie poor fitment

we had a look at 2, a fastback and a convertible..both were resprays done some time ago..both in need of some restoration

The fastback wasnt too bad the driveline needed some work oil leaks everywhere..there was rust evident seeping through the seams here and there and some small holes in the passenger footwell..but it was nice and straight and the interior in good original condition..

The convertible had a dodgey respray and lots of bog in the inner door sill area,obviously where water has leaked from the hood..i was very skeptical, but the driveline seemed alot cleaner..

All in all though, looking at least 30k plus 20k maybe for restoration...wondering is it better to build one from scratch then cause apparently an Elenoar conversion is on the cards too..

Will look into those repro shells :cheers:.

But at over 30k a pop, is that the going rate for a rough stang these days..I remember my boss picking a reasonably clean one up for under 20k 15 yr ago

Have seen some on unique cars for tween 20 and 30 thou, just like lines the price depends on spec and condition altho you get the rust/bog for free! . . . .just tell your mate to get himself a nice skyline and leave the rustangs for the bogans :thumbsup:

I guess it comes down to the manufacturer, the repo stuff I have brought is pritty decent, and licensed by GM.

Either a fastback or vert will be considerable more than a standard mustang, after looking at a couple in the usa recently, I reckon you could find a better car in aus for the same if not much more dollars.

Hes had a few mustangs already so dont think he will be converting to a skyline EVER!!!

Those Dynacorn repro shells are great..considering full rebuilds end up costing a mint by the time you replace everything, which is usually what happens..

Just start fresh, nice new crate motor/suspension/driveline of your choice and its basically a new car...without the headaches of stripping and repairing an old one..no need to do a RHD conversion..i dont know why anyone would buy an old rustbucket unless you were going to do an original numbers matching rebuild..but if your going to mod it with something like an Elenoar kit anyway this definately would be the way to go..

I wonder how hard it would be to get it registered though..can it still be registered as a club car if its not actually 40 yrs old .

Would it have to pass modern day emission tests? or do old car laws apply..:unsure:

^^^thats an interesting question. . . .reshelling is a good idea but im curious as to how you would get around rego hassles, id say that taking the compliance plates/restamping (etc)off the old shell and putting it on the new shell in the backyard would quickly lead to gaol time :down:
