Not any more you can't! More like $3000US for a slightly ratty one. Prices on these things have gone through the roof over there. Shipping should be somewhat less though.

Plenty around here for sale. Despite appreciating the heritage of these cars I would think you would be far better off with a 180SX or S13-14 Silvia. Lots more choice and potentially a much better car. I'm actually toying with the idea of getting one as a daily driver:D

So how much would I be expecting to pay for a thrashed hachi from Aus? RHD.

Oh and the insurance is cheap (er) here for an old AE86. Dont know why, its only a slightly bit more than my 1000cc mini!

You know what you could do. While GT-S 'rollas are expensive in the US, the SR-5s are still pretty cheap. If you don't mind doing the work of transplanting in a 4AGE (might as well go 20 valve while you're at it), and if you're going to upgrade the suspension and diff anyway, a nice clean rust-free SR-5 from the southern states (preferably southwest) might be a good option. Of course it would be LHD . . .

Yeah, the Australian 4A-C version called a Toyota "Sprinter" (Rear wheel drive too, topi)... which it's name was at odds with the Japanese models because the j-spec "Sprinter Trueno" had the pop-up lights, whereas the "Carolla Levin" was the one that had the regular headlights... just like the Aussie version. So theoretically, the Aussie version is closest to the AE85 Carolla Levin SR, but with a wheezy 4A-C instead of the almost-as-bad Japanese ver. 3A-U.

Theres not alot of real AE86's getting around Australia, they're somewhat of a rarity. The one I posted up before is for sale for offers around and above $13,000 AUD and its the real deal, and if you want a drift machine well, this thing is awesome

There are a lot of modified Aus delivered AE86s that have had all the nice Japanese bits transplanted already. Check out www.toymods.org

Bargain really hard -- there are a lot of people on there with no money which inflate the prices
