Hey everyone,

Just got my R33 GTR, and i am looking at upgrading the stock speakers and headunit! (headunit isn't stock, but its from japan so can't even pickup any aussie station's!)

In my previous car (VT commodore), I had Alpine Type R splits up front, these are splits (component speakers).

I went with splits for the commy because it was easy to install, they had factory mounts for them.

I don't think the skyline has factory tweet mounts/location's, So to keep things simple, i was tempted to buy a set of coaxial speakers, thoughts?

Looking at the Polk Audio DB651, but if money can buy better i am up for it. They are going to be running off a 2Chan response, it does 150wrms to each channel.

if you have the type R use those again?

you can do some mounts on mirrors or a few other spots ( see carbon mirror mounts in the forum )

You can do them fiberglass and paint them ? Or just use the tweeter cups on most splits ? You can drop the 6" in the doors pretty easy , run off that amp !! Thats a bunch of power to just splits , dynamat is must or they will sound crap with that kinda power behind them

id run that amp to sub and use mixed mono signal from amp in stereo or deck power on the frionts ( if you want a sub)

I would do splits unless your budget is extremely cheap

Blaupunkt makes some for about 100 that sound ok ?

Jaycar vifa brand is better

So many choices depends on your budget, goals, ears, they need to be really decent with that much power !!!

Figure about 200watts max capable at least that jaycar amp can drive them beyond 200 watts easy

Deck you can get freq fixer to hear aussie music stations

Or better dump it for a new deck and not fart with the bad radio reception on jap radios

I still do have the splits, took them out of the car before it got written off (stupid hail storm!).

It just looks like a Pain to do those custom tweeter mounts, was looking for something a bit more simple, quick and easy. But still don't want a pox looking setup! Do most people mount the crossovers in the doors or should i just put them in the boot? Does it matter how far they are from the speakers?

I would personally love to use my old splits, as they are still working great, i am just worried about cutting into things and getting them mounted!

Any recommendation's on a head unit? Thoughts on digital radio? :\

For a head unit, I already know what i want but not sure which unit to pick or if I should buy from my local JB or look else where (online, oversea's ect)

3 Pre outs

USB

Bluetooth

AUX

^ bare minimum features I would want out of my head unit.

Crossovers if you run them from the boot you will need

Two wires to each door ? Mounted in doors just one?

Your preference really , two wires would be able to take more current but not nessasary for mids tweets unless you run active crossover on each speaker

not a lot of hacking to use alpines and have the savings go towards having a shop install them if your not up for it

Decks dont buy from overseas all the features might not work and warranty is more them likely void unless your after super basic sinlge din deck steer clear of cheap US dealers

My deck choices in order

Alpine/pioneer

Kenwood/ clarion upper models/orion digital radio

clarion/sony

Blaupunkt/ the rest including ebay

Your bare min comes on just about any mid range deck and lots of lower end ones too

Digital radio and or tv?

I have both in my car but its a lot more to get it to work while moving , nice but way beyond most budgets or skills to do it

Parts had to be imported to make it work right here and still can be flaky , touchy signals

Even my hd tv at home looses signal with new hd antenna so double that in a car

The option for digital is use 3/4g iphone to stream it to the radio via bluetooth or cable , not perfect but works

Note pandora does not work in australia (pioneer radio)

No need for tv, although would be nice, but i can imagine the hassles of putting in another antenna.

Do you need another antenna if you want digital radio?

I just don't want to be really cutting into the car just to fit some splits/crossovers, although today i just noticed how bad the stock speakers are..bleh.

Mine has a sharkfin amplified antenna off a high end merc or audi from europe , tiny one but a bugger to install double wall steel to drill and remove the roof liner , cost a mint

And amplified it takes power as well and custom mods to the plugs too

its for radio or tv Digital

Holes must be drilled into roof !!!

The radios here will get signals but a digital radio takes a different length to tune in digital radio , shorter in most cases but the ones they supply dont like window tint with metalization in it ( most have some) new ceramic tint but hasnt hit the oz market yet

You can use magnetic ones on the rear deck but the tint and ground plane dont work well , not a perfected science in cars here yet and only a few radios offer it , orion digital

Mine is from overseas modified for use here

You can mount the tweeters behind the factory mid grils ? No cutting crossover can fit in armrest area just secure well and foam over them to stop rattle on skins if there close to door panel skins , like i said have a pro do it since you dont seem confident to do it??

I am confident to do it, but im a bit of a "original condition" nut. Don't really want to be drilling holes or cutting apart my door trim's.

I did the commodore install myself, which was the response amp, a 4 chan, sub and the type r's, along with the head unit installation.

Any recommendation's on where to buy a headunit?
