Hey Guys,

I've got a silvertop rb20det - I've asked this question before but never got a proper answer - does anyone know how to get the flutter (intercooler dose) noise

instead of the stock 'pssshht' noise?? Has anyone experimented and got results? People have said 'bigger cooler, more boost' but I'm pretty certain that's not the case!

Any ideas?

Cheers

the sound u can hear is called compressor surge or compressor stall.... what it is is compressed air trying to come out of the air inlet on your turbo and hence trying to stop the wheels spinning... mainly cause u are using a small bov or no bov or have it set too tight.... this causes excessive pressure on your turbo and can cause premature failure due to excessive load caused by the stalling..... most cars will have a bit which is ok but if it happens alot and at high boost levels id look into getting a better bov....

basically what im trying to say is if u want the noise tighten up your bov or block it off though i dont advise this cause of the afforementioned circumstances.... dunno if that helps or not.... cheers Jon

Steel, just make a cut out, this is not dangerous btw! Been running my car like this for 2 years without a bov at 14psi!

Hmm.. so do I remove the stock bov - by undoing those two bolts? then take that off and put a steel cut out in it's position? Is that right??

I've never removed the standard bov before - so don't really know what to expect!

Cheers

this is a very debatable issue as to weather or not it causes dramas with bearing wear etc ..... but after spending 2k on a turbo id hate to have a warranty voided by just wanting a "cool" sound.... its not worth it in my eyes.... but having said that ca18det's dont have a bov std and neither do alot of opther cars... but rb's have them for a reason and ill keep mine that way...

BelGarien has a nice flutter affect in his BOV , he has a HKS SSQ and he has just removed the fins , I think he said , you may have to ask what he did exactly but I do know that he still has his BOV on

Nope, though its probably best not to do it on a standard turbo. I dont really mind who does or does not do it. Fact is I have always done it, for no real reason but its been fine. Benny boy at Race Pace aint fussed either way so nor am I.

Yer i did it and my turbo went bang :( probably would have happened regardless though as was running more boost.

I also did what steve did although i refitted the bov on top after i had put a steel plate over it. Then you have to block up two holes, a bolt works good on the smaller one and the end of a broom worked a treat on the other one. hehehehe :) weeeeeeeeeeee vromm chh chh chh chh

    • CTIS (Central Tire Inflation System) has existed since the 80's. I'm looking into buying a Hummer H1 and they generally included it.
    • My idle is set at 950rpm though - Moving the timing around 20 degrees is not really what I'd call a calm idle. That said... neither is chop, by definition. The LS ECU likes to adjust timing to hold idle as opposed to air. It'd work, but generally speaking there'd be a discrepancy in the base idle and the IACV would want to move the timing around anyway to maintain said idle. I think I'm just going to keep the timing steady anyway. Preserve my engine mounts.  My aircon is now officially regassed. As the guy was reversing I noticed my reverse lights do not operate, along with my reverse cam. This is a bit distressing, because 100% of guides talk about which wire to connect to backup cams as "the goes with the [other color] wire". Often when doing conversions. Unfortunately the R34 colour wires aren't documented Unfortunately I had a T56 Magnum gearbox with it's reverse switch, which also isn't documented. Unfortunately there's definitely not documentation for people with both of these in the one car. Unfortunately I forgot. After many hours of this, I have a reverse cam and reverse lights again. The wire going through the trans tunnel to the reverse switch had broken. Upon inspection, it looks like this one wire had about 7 spade terminals and extensions in it.. for reasons I cannot possibly comprehend. I also spent the 750 hours required to clean up the wiring behind my head unit which now looks like this: This is a monumental improvement relative to what used to be there WRT triple gauges, head unit, traction control, wideband controller, and whatever the f**k OEM stuff still exists there in various states of connectivity/needed. Next step is to check in at the Exhaust shop to see/confirm how much clearance I have, to decide what mid mufflers or 'resonators' (which are just straight through, narrower mufflers) I can add and hopefully cut out a lot of exhaust leaks, pinhole, v-band or otherwise. But first step will be to 'take a look' before the next step.
    • Fark the AFM card and Nistune, Haltech Nexus S3, DBW, cruise control, flex fuel, dis dat.
    • It's most likely the bolt/bush where the cover bolts back wore and allowed cover to move forward.
    • Still haven't put the injectors and R35 AFM in so we can tune the bloody thing for the HG highflow it got mid last year! I think I can forecast the upgrade path to a bigger twin scroll, external gate, Haltech, flex setup, Samsonas, dis dat, etc will be .... a while away!
