Just as the topic says,

I'm curious about getting my engine rebuilt, why one generally does it, when the best time or amount of km's to get it done, and how much it usually costs.

I have never had this done.

From my understanding its just taking the whole thing apart, cleaning it and then putting it all back together and replacing any internals that are shagged, right?

Why? cos it's stuffed

When? See above

How much? How fast do you want to go?

Cheers

Ken

Why -

To make it more reliable (this may be because its stock and your power mods will break it)

When -

when something brakes and the car wont run anymore

or when you know its broken and are afraid to risk driving it

or when the compression is so low (or it burns so much oil) it wont give you the power you want

How much = how reliable

To build a basic engine may cost you about $1500 - but if you want it to be extra strong you could spend another $2000 and not notice any difference in power (but one motor will cop a caining and not give you any trouble) The money you spend on a long motor is like the foundations you build on. If you skimp it will not be as reliable in the long run.

Okay, my car isnt broken.. But I do figure around the 200,000km mark it will be quite 'tired' so I am looking at ways to bring it back to as new again.

How does a rebuild make it more reliable and/or more powerful? what components are changed?

pentae, as long as the engine is running fine, just check the compression. As long as it is OK you really don't want to rebuild it.

Generally parts changed in a rebuild might include pistons, bearings, crank, would always replace piston rings and gaskets.

Pentae if it works dont fix it. Rebuild if you are after big power gains and therefore will need to strengthen internals i.e pistons etc... I rebuilt my engine back in standard form and it cost me $6,000. From what i know that is around the benchmark you will be looking at for a rebuild...
