Negative.

I know most people on here, even on their best day, won't beat a trained and experienced driver (e.g. John)....... even on their best days.

It's all about racing experience, and previous driver training on a race circuit.

In July '74 I put down a 49.6 around Oran Park's short circuit, during a lap dash event with Datsun Driver's Club, so! where does that put me?

Sorry... That must be before my time. Oran Park these days only has South Circuit, North Circuit and Grand Prix Circuit.

That was a little bit of a dick swinging effort there mate :) Well done. You've definitely impressed all the 14 year olds on here :)

And my point still stands 100%. Most people on here wouldn't be able to beat trained and experienced racing drivers like John on their best days, even with nitrous.

And my point being: The quickest car in the club in 74 was a 240Z and I had a series production 180B SSS. But the Zed couldn't get close to me this day.

And to enlighten you, the short circuit was the ORIGINAL track, when you came off the straight into CC Bend, then the SSS's, then Robin Orlando, then Dufor Dogleg, then into the Dipper before Energol Corner onto the straight.

I don't swing dick, but I've been about motorsport probably longer than your old.

But as it's 30 years on, I might need a lot of practice, but half a decent steerer on his day can beat nearly anybody, so long as the car is up to the task.

Maybe it's as you say, most of the people on here aren't up to the task, driver or car, but it's only most! not all.

Well thanks for the history lesson... And you're right... You were probably racing before the birth of black jesus. (that will fly right over his head no doubt)

"Maybe it's as you say, most of the people on here aren't up to the task, driver or car, but it's only most! not all"

So maybe you'd like to show us all how that differs from what I said? :(

And as for your old racing skills, here's a low resolution of a Racing Car Driver from the 70's (your hey day) lapping Wakefield Park last weekend at the REXNET Private PRACTICE day...

And, yes... I'm being absolutely serious. I assume since you're such an authority on motor racing, that you'd know Wakefield Park's lines and can spot the horrendous ones being taken by this clown, let alone his stupid antics in diving under brakes (or in one case, no brakes at all) and nearly wiping out other cars on the track. Or perhaps you aren't familiar with the new revamped Wakefield Park, because it has been renovated like Oran Park since you were a little ankle biter

Geez! I must be in the wrong forum, I thought Sydney Skyline drivers & SAU members were an intelligent lot.

Ladies & gentlemen & others, all this crap started from a comment I made about what it could take to beat a zed.

The comment: "Don't necessarily need a GTR to beat a zed, just a good balanced car and a good steerer. The question is, is there any better than John on the day".

"Just about anybody is capable, on their day"

Now we have someone telling me how much of a dickhead I am and how lousy a driver I am.

Maybe someone should have a look in the mirror and say hello to an ignorant, self opiniated, know it all, imbecile, that I would dearly love to see how fast he is around a similar piece of bitumen (O P's South Circuit) How close can you get to 50 secs?

As I said, "a good balanced car and a good steerer".

Let's go back a few years to the mid to late 60's, if you weren't around in those days Andrew, look up the history. Two, THEN! little known aussies designed and built their own cars, powered by a 3.0L Repco V8 engine that was by far ahead of it's rivals. The first of these two persons was none other than Sir Jack Brabham, and he took this combination to 2 world titles, beating THE VERY BEST the world could assemble against him, the other was Frank Matich and he took his own designed Matich SR3 sports car to America and competed in The Can-Am series finishing in the top half of the field, every time he started. Up against the might of Ford and the GT40, Chev's Chapparal, Lola's etc, etc a collection of the world's best sports cars with engine capacities sometimes exceeding 7.0L. All this after dominating sports car racing back at home in Australia for over 5 years, and later F5000.

There are probably outright lap records still standing of his, at some circuits and that was 30 + years ago

And in more recent times Gibson Motorsports "Bluebird & DR30 Skyline" both GIANT KILLERS in their own right, beating and finishing ahead of more V8's than were in front of them.

WHAT WERE THESE, if they weren't "good balanced cars with good steerers"????

A number of videos & tests exist that show a GOOD GTS25t is better than a GTR, as they are much lighter and better balanced than your typical GTR. What's to say that someone won't turn up in a GTSt with about 300+rwhp and knows their way around Wakefield Park and puts your GTR's to shame.

If I had the time and inclination to organise it, I reckon I could assemble a few cars that would knock John off his pedestal, they might not be Nissans, but would still do the job. Could be Nissan Powered and N/A, not TURBO. As I gather John's Zed is an Z32 and a sports car, not a touring car, how you think he will go up against a PRB Clubman, with 4AGE 20V's, or SR20's in them, they go around Wakefield Park in 1.02 minutes and Neil Bates managed a 59.89 sec lap. How do you think John would handle them apples and these are simply,

"GOOD BALANCED CARS with GOOD STEERERS"

As for my skills, your right, I have never driven Eastern Creek, Wakefield Park, or the current Oran Park circuits, but similarly, you might find yourself all at sea on tracks like Warwick Farm, Catalina, Amaroo Park and Hume Weir. I would like to see your efforts FIRST TIME OUT on these tracks, you might have to refer back to your video clip for instruction.

When I get my little toy finished I plan on using Wakefield & Oran Park tracks to set it up, so after a couple of hours on each I am sure I will have sorted out the pitfalls in both car and track

Your low res video clip was entertaining, can you drive better than you point a camera????? the pictures of the dash and floor were very entertaining.

Remember! not everybody is the same, not everybody goes out with the attitude of the driver in the video, some people have the intelligence to drive a track first at a speed within their capabilities before going for it. He made comments like "a little bit of drift here" a number of times.

By the way you have attacked me here, you most certainly must relate to his mentallity, particularly as you have NO IDEA who your talking to.

My 180B and I had done a number of events at Oran Park before I set the time I did and that only happened after the Selby brothers had the car for a week, at their workshop at Planthurst Rd Carlton NSW, setting up the suspension and balance of the car. A set of Dunlop Green Spots helped with a few seconds as well. Prior to this I campaigned an Austin A30 with both A & B series engines in it over time.

Why don't you read the comment and DIGEST it's content, before you go running off at the mouth trying to justify exactly what I said in the first place.

And your black jesus crack didn't go over my head, you will have to get up early to get something past me.

Have a nice day!

1. I didn't take that video, it was dropped because the car nearly rolled and he guy grabed hold of himself bracing himself.

2. You stick to your videos and tests... But you should know that my previous car was a 380rwhp GTS-t and I took it to Wakefield, Eastern Creek and Oran Park multiples times in the year or so that I owned it. I'm currently building my GTR for circuit racing.

3. You remind me of an old person who tells stories of his younger years. Thanks for the stories, but they're not interesting.

4. It would take *WAY* too long to reply to that drivel, so I'll just leave it with this.

Negative.

(important parts bolded and upsized for easier reading for older eyes)

So before going off on your own little ridiculous tangent talking about all sorts of crap about PRB Clubmans, and GT40s, Chev Chapparals, Sir Jack Brabham and Neil Bates, perhaps you should make an appointment with your optometrist.

It's obvious to me that you mistook my initial reply as an attack of your own evidently LEGENDARY driving skills, when all I said was that MOST PEOPLE ON THIS FORUM WOULDN'T HAVE A CHANCE IN HELL OF BEATING AN EXPERIENCED AND TRAINED DRIVER LIKE JOHN. (Last time I checked Neil Bates with his 4AGE PRB Clubman didn't frequent this forum)

Thank you for dropping by though, it's been entertaining.

this thread looks like it's interesting, lots of big writing in it!

I'll read it tomorrow i think when im back in at work :)

I think im about to be amused.

See everyone Sunday anyhow (i hope Troy has the car tuned so i can come up with him)

I might wear a sign... Where is Merli and chuck a bit smilie face on it for the heck of it :D

Yep all pretty much spot on except I think the Reco V8 that powered Sir Jack's cars was a 2.5 litre otherwise not a bad read. I was at the Farm the day WB tore down a couple hundred metres of the horse track fencing in his Lola. Ahhhh Creek Corner what memories. OOOps showing the age here.

Cheers

I am not 40 yet but getting there real soon. Does this make me old? or is it an attitude more than a condition? Healthy to and for's here. More V's make old guy young like me??

Comparing my car to a frame with 4 wheels and an engine?

Anyway just to change the subject or encourage it more. My zed was tuned on our dyno last night. 345kw at the wheels. Best bit is at only 3400 rpm makes 225 kw at the wheels. Compare that to dyno readings out there. Still very safe tune only 20 degrees advance and 21psi, and have not adjusted cam timing yet. Still more to come.

PS John has been racing since 1984, nothing serious just club events Supersprints etc.

This track day is going to be a biggy. Auto Salaon and other mags and photographers coming. Lots of tough cars and many and varied imports, Soarers, FTO, 300zx, 180SX, 200SX, GTS-T, MR2 and YES a bunch of GTR's , etc.

I'm almost always with you on your missions to educate people Merli, and the times when I'm not it's been because I didn't have enough knowledge to have a clue. You come across as harsh but justified to me. The Forum Policeman, Knowledge Division.

It's true that Ghostrider wandered around a bit in most of his posts but it was your swinging dick and impressing the 14 year olds comments that set the tone; despite the smilies.

It's a public forum. People can and will waffle but there's no need to be rude unless someone throws it at you first.

Ghostrider's:

"In July '74 I put down a 49.6 around Oran Park's short circuit, during a lap dash event with Datsun Driver's Club, so! where does that put me?"

was all it took to get you firing. I would have thought that your answer could have been more like:

"Like I said, MOST people. By the sounds of it, you are not most people. That's where it puts you."

With regard to the issue of who could beat John; 'a good steerer with a well balanced car' or 'not most people on the forum'; you were stating your opinion, not a fact.

FFS! The two of you are arguing different points!

See you on Sunday Merli, me and my stock GT-t are gonna kick John's arse round and round the track all day long. 345 rwkw? Pfff I've got at least a hundred and some very cheap tyres. He doesn't stand a chance.

Well since my car ihas been in a workshop all week getting dyno tuned, and before the tuning was finished, the dyno just up and left the building... :)

Im carless and cant even get up to Wakefield to spectate...sorry Ash

The other week i got a Hertz race car to go to Phillip Island, they did say ulimited kms :) But it will just frustrate the hell out of me watching everybody, so enjoy, and good luck with trying to round up the Zed. Aint many cars going to beat it, as there arent too mnay cars that are so well setup with good power.

Especially with a V'd up old bloke driving...maybe someone needs to spike those drinks with a bit of vodka to ensure that John adopts some interesting lines and braking points. :alcoholic

Enjoy the day ppl.. :D Regretting not being there, and ill regret it twice as much if a GTST gets into the 1:09s before me. :)

wow.. alot of angry talk in this thread.. Its a real shame.

there was a article on one of the car mags recently saying the GT-R is over rated. I honestly dont think the GT-R is going to give me any more enjoyment out of driving and as such have stuck with my GTST. its all personal opinion.

Anyway for those heading to the track tomorrow I will see you there.

ok, I'm having a REALLY hard time trying to convince Bec to postpone the wedding tomorrow so that I can come, but its really not looking good. :P

Guess I'll just wait for Merli's event photos. :(
