For a starters, i wouldnt use a ratchet.

Use a strong arm, and slide a long piece of pipe over it. Leverage is key.

Easiest would be to drive to a mechanic and ask them to rattle gun it loose for you. Then hand tighten it and do it when you get home.

I recently had the same trouble, so popped down to the nearest tyre place and borrowed a rattle gun. Mind you, they'll probably not do it for you in case something goes wrong, but rattle it off, zap it up again and drive home.

Then won't have an issue.
