That's why I asked - the bonnets shape around the headlight looks to be slightly different to the nm35 headlight itself

Pic for your reference although no bonnet, you can see where the "tabs" sit in relation to an NM headlight.

less gears in an auto the better ;)

You'd better get in touch with Mercedes, it's time someone with real insight told them they're doing it wrong...

Oh no! Based on Aarons' advice I just bought a 2 speed Powerglide tranny to go in my M35. Back to the drawing board I suppose.

Spool that baby up Leon; 8000rpm stall = mad skidz bro!

LOL at Aaron's successful trolololol

Nah mate - you haz ultimate- NO gears!

How'd that work out for Nissan

Too hard for Mr average no-brain to service with correct fluids at the correct intervals (on that note, I wonder how often - if ever - people change the filter near the cooler).

Nothing wrong with that transmission Alex, just the tool behind the wheel/under the bonnet.

    • Get a timing light on it and verify it's sparking reliably at a sane ignition timing. Use a COP extension lead to be 100% sure about timing instead of hoping that the timing loop on the back of the engine is accurate. Make sure it's actually injecting fuel. MAF is not used on the stock ECUs for initial cranking.
    • RE5R01A is the transmission. Didn't realize they had a 5 speed for the NA cars but for some reason the turbo engines stuck to 4 speeds. Looks like the solenoid block is still available from Nissan directly at a somewhat reasonable price: 31940-60X01 https://www.amayama.com/en/genuine-catalogs/epc/nissan-japan/skyline/er33/6568-rb25de/trans/317 I would move sooner on this than later. The moment the de minimis exception for Japan goes away expect to be paying 25% tariffs even for stuff like this.
    • Only RB26 are low from factory. And even then the ECU actually want high impedance, because it's essentially the same ECU as the RB20 anyway, and thus they have a f**king resistor pack!
    • Is this preventable by priming the system with external oil pressure? I've seen the speed academy folks hook up an external oil priming system to the oil pressure sensor port with an air compressor to check for oil leaks before putting an engine back in a car.
