Hi All,

When I tuned my car, the software (UPREV Cipher) came with a diagnostics program to run on Nissan CAN BUS cars. So- its good new for you people!

I tried the software out on Jetwrecks car today successfully. What this means is that I can read and clear the error codes that appear on your ECU's without having to go through all the numbers/throttle pressing etc. I can also clear them at a touch of a button.

This is a list of what I can CAN DO with this software:

  • Retrieve and clear trouble codes
  • Monitor and record ECU parameters (ie coolant temp, engine oil temp, injector duty cycle / duty cycle , AFM volts etc )
  • Adjust your ignition timing up to +2 degrees or - 5 degrees (please note- I'm not in any way responsible for what happens to your car if you want me to do this)
  • Adjust your Idle RPM up to +250
  • Monitor record ABS parameters
  • Clear your learned fuel settings
  • Conduct a cylinder power test ( turn the ignition to various cylinders on or off)
  • Turn the fuel pump off to de-pressurise the system
  • Test your cooling fans

What I can not do with this software-

  • tune your car
  • Fix your cars old sensors on the spot

Now, because NM35's are not supported by the full tuning functions of UPREV, and there are so many different types of the NM35 computer, I cannot guarantee it will work with your car but once I plug it in to a few more cars I'll get a better Idea. For example I could not access the BCM (body control module) options on Jetwerecks car. But if you don't try, You will never know. I don't know what every code means, but generally, once you have a code and you search on the internet, you can find out what it is, and how its triggered.

So, forget going to Nissan ($) just to get a code read- I'll do it for you. Now, preferably, you bring the car to me and I'll do it from home. However if your car is stuck/stranded at your place, I'm sure we can arrange something. I need advance notice, as I borrow the laptop.

Best thing is- I'm not going to charge you. Thats right No dollars. I am partial to 6-packs of BEER, (if you get my driftcheers.gif) if this process aids you in some way.

PM me if you want to check it out. I'm located on the Northern side of Sydney. If your interstate, I can point you in the direction to get your own software.

i have a diagnostic tool that will do m35's in Adelaide. it does most imports. M35's, Skylines, most stuff on the C34's, 180's supra's. if someone needs in Adelaide send me a pm. interms of V35's can only do either the 2.5L or the infinity versions. so may possibly be same interms of engines nd transmissions with the m35's.

Hi Alex, does changing the ignition (in particular taking timing out) occur across the whole rev range or can you set it in (say) per 1000rpm?

In any case I'm interested in making use of this software. I look forward to your PM.

Cheers, Leon.

Does it do Attessa codes?

I'd love to say yes, but I couldn't guarantee it. It does recognise and support AWD models- as it has a ability to see the awd trigger. Also, Where are the attesa errors lodged. Like I said earlier, on Craigs car it recognised the ECU, and ABS computer, but didn't recognise the BCM.

i have an old laptop for emanage tuning, alex, you want that for a more permanant solution for yourself?

runs windows xp

If it has a battery that still has some life in it, then yes, I'd love it! PM me and we'll work something out.cheers.gif

Timing change I believe is static. Its not programmable. Think of it as an easy way for the factory to stop a car pinging- thats what I think its used for. ECU's are so complicated on these cars!

PM sent.

Do either if these do airbag faults? Need to clear that, might be easier to get off my arse and do the reset, but I was hoping it'd clear itself.

I could reset one on my car.

On yours I think it will depend on if I can read your BCM as I think thats where the Airbag code lodges- as opposed to the ECU or ABS computers.

  • 2 weeks later...

Some info I have got from testing- was a PM to Commsman, but might as well be public- no point hiding secrets.

Just so happens we had a stock ECU ARX that we could test.

How we did the test- simple stationary first gear idle to redline- no stall. All done @ WOT- difference in throttle pos. volts negligible.

What I did to the timing- I Decreased it to a maximum -8 degrees, then logged, then Increased to a maximum +2 degrees and logged.

Results: see the WORD Doc at the bottom!

Sorry for the shitty table, but its all I can do in a hurry. I guess that answers you question. It looks like VQ25dets are set -1 degree timing from the service in J land- its the second one I've seen with the -1 figure.

Interesting notes- Its using more fuel with the timing retarded. Max inj pluse is 18.2ms rather than 17.9ms

Timing retard- MAF volts 4.88 vs advance 4.85- responsible for the fueling difference I think. Timing retarded should spool the turbo a little harder- hence the difference in MAF volts + fuel.

There you go, some info to ponder.

That info opens up a world of possibilities for people who either aren't ready for a full aftermarket system or don't want to go down that path.

I will be playing around as soon as I get the cable & a few other things together. Will post up any results.

Thanks heaps Alex. I never expected you to do a test like that, & so quick too.

Let's not go too far Leon! It's just a bit of timing advance. Doesn't mean you can tune it, just adjust it a little.

Hope we can learn from it all.I'd love to see you messing around with the coding of he software!worship.gif

Yes, but adjusting it a little could make a big difference. It seems Nissan engineers (or should that be Renault or Mazda?) weren't too stupid. They allowed a heap more ignition retarding than advance, and that is the direction (most) people need to go to stop detonation when they increase boost.

Some mask this by using fuel that is inherently good at stopping detonation, but those of us without access to such magical liquid need to find another solution, & this could be it.

Please don't rain on my parade - I'm excited!

I'm not sure about delving too far into the software coding, but if I see something that allows me to remove the speed limiter & increase rev limit, than I may set myself up in opposition to G-Zone & Nismo etc, lol.

I haven't been brave enough to try to download the map off a NM35 ECU. That ends you up with a heap of binary. It took me 3+ hrs with my car, and by the end, I had drained the battery, and the jumper pack battery I had connected to it as well- ign has to be on.

I don't even know if you could download a NM35 Map. The company is unwilling to take it further, mainly because of the completly different ECU. However, if someone is really into writing code and deciphering what is needed- then I think this is the closest you'll get to something that works on nissans of all different types. Its way beyond me!

    • This is a story of my life things, I learned eventually (thanks to someone calling me out) that my enthusiasm for discussing and sharing ideas that it came across as arrogance and I'm like... WTF?!    One thing I'm pretty sure I justifiably pride myself on is knowing that everyone will have things they can teach you, and you're always going to find out that something you think you know turns out wrong - you just don't know what it is until you get there.   Just the bursting enthusiasm that comes with ADHD when you hit something that gives you dopamine dumps can come across like you think everyone else is wrong or don't matter. But yeah, I'm a software engineer by trade and also do tuning in weekends and 100% have long had a reputation for  quickly making connections when resolving problems or forming solutions that I've sometimes had to take people form a long walk from start to end to explain how I ended up where I did when it's seemed "too simple" when I've stated my initial case, and had the "WTF" type reaction when they've realised how much was actually considered haha.   My reward is that I get all the curly problems thrown at me.
    • Wives never seem to find things funny. Especially when they're trying to sleep, and you've found the new funniest thing ever. I've never seen someone be able to get try and be cranky with me, while they're holding back fits of laughter... 😛   Also, I tell mine it's payback anyway. She has BiPolar. So the household can get quite emotionally wild at times 😛
    • I'm not up to date on the latest, but for basic modifications like pod filter, lower springs etc you can get a modification permit at the time of inspection.  For more serious modifications you will need engineering.  Intercoolers used to fall into the mod permit rule but its been a long while since i looked it up.   Either way you will be able to get it registered, just a case of $300 vs $3k .
    • Hi everyone! I’m the new owner of a 1996 R33 GTS-T, I’ve purchased this car over from Queensland and brought it to Western Australia and I’ve found that there is a hole cut out in the engine bay for the FMIC that enters into the wheel well (fender liners are in the boot). For anyone that has had to get their car over the PITS here, will this be a major issue?
    • Yeah I've spotted this one too, whenever it's lotto superdraw week and I'm browsing car sales dot com for my new ride They must be dreaming, maybe it's worth 150k for the link to Brock?
