You have to be careful with using exporters who arent familiar with Australian requirements for imports. Some car dealers in Japan pay Tradecareview to put their cars they have for sale on the site and there are many hidden dangers in such an approach. Personally, I would go with a local importer who can help you find the right car and has a better understanding of the complexities when importing a car into Aus.

Agreed. Unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing, have done it 10 times before and have MANY hours of free time to make calls and follow up with every little issue, go through a local with experience.

In the worst case scenario that everything turns to s&%t and the car is a lemon, you will want to have someone in Australia that you can chase down to sort it all out.

How experienced and network-savvy is your "local importer"? Does he have a good mechanic-inspector in the car's home country whether it's USA, Japan or elsewhere? Rust is just one enemy...

I've bought 4x GTRs. 2x locally. 2 through an importer.

Mathematically in today's climate, if the car's insured value is above say $28K, consider the importer route. If it's below $18K, I'd buy locally. Anything in between is on a cusp and thus it'll depend on whether or not it'll retain value with low depreciation. Consider the above on the basis that extra costs can amount to $6K of which your importer only gets $1-2K

Hope this helps.
