Hey guys i have a completely original 32 GTR which hasn't been modified in anyway but unfortunately the radiator poped which caused the motor to overheat. The damage report is a blown head gasket and possibly a warped head.

So I need to some help in deciding what to do.

my options are

A)just fix the blown gasket and warped head-lowest price i got quoted was 3500, and that was best case scenario, worst case was 5500 with nothing wrong to the block. melbourne btw

but with that kind of money that's half way to a new forged motor possibly b30/26

so option b) just use the money to build a new motor instead and swap the old out for new?

my car has just been sitting in the garage for the last 5 month have no idea what my options could be or which on to choose..... any help or ideas?

thats about what my 3.0 is upto so far, you will spend $5k+ returning to stock or spend the extra while its apart and have it alot stronger and then you are only paying extra for parts as labour should be the same ether way

from memory the BC 2.9 was between $5500 and $6000 for the kit, which is the way I'd go if I did it again

is engine coming out to do the head?

if so i would change:

*head gasket to metal type + ARP head bolts

*new ACL standard size main and big end bearings (if journals are good)

*tomei sump baffles

*new rear main seal/gaskets/heater hoses

*new turbos + dump pipes

all this only if your bottom end is tight and running good compression, its easy for costs to add up, especialy if the motors out you may aswell do as much as you can to prevent future failures

it's ~$6K plus shipping and taxes. So around $7K

I forgot about that, you still have shipping, stamp duty and GST, so probably closer to $8k, plus labour

is the whole motor gone or is it just the head and gasket, if it's just the head buy a second hand one with a gasket and put it back together, if it's the whole thing then it depends on how much you want to spend and how far down the rabbit hole you want to go.

if your happy with how much power the car had before buy a motor of ebay, there on there for between $3000 and $4500, and drop it in.

if your chasing more power, pick a number and build it to that, no point spending $20,000 on a motor to take 1500hp and only run 600hp, on the same note don't spend $5000 on a motor to take 600hp and try a push 1500hp through it

yeah the engine is coming out to change the head, anything else? new oil pump?

the car runs, mechanic doubts any damage to the bottom end. Want more power but want to focus on response

    • Throwing my spoon to the soup here a bit.  When I installed a 044 back in 2012, along with the direct power mod, the car became very difficult to start. To a point I burned one starter motor as I was late for work and tried to get the thing going. With some tuning and careful use of gas pedal when cranking it became bearable. Trying to make this short as possible, but the 044 died after 2-3 years, after which I went with an AEM 320lph pump, which also died after about 4 years to my dismay. After that I went with a Nismo pump, and while trying diagnose an emissions problem, I noticed for the first time that my fuel pressure was 5bar/72psi on idle, and that removing the vacuum line did nothing. After monitoring the situation, and removing the direct power feed and going back to FPCM in attempts to remedy it, I noticed there was fuel in the pressure regulator vac line. Kept the FPCM, installed AEM external regu and the car became sooo much better in every way, including starting. And I had driven it like it was for 11 years.. Anyway, I agree these are likely two different problems, and the FP problem you just haven't noticed before. I do not know much about haltecs, but what first came to mind was the CAS, which probably is not there any more. So how is the wiring from haltec to gauge cluster? How is the battery voltage and alternator?

    • +1 for getting a screen off alibaba, CarPlay/Android Auto is vastly better than whatever navigation cars had 10 years ago. I got an Android screen for my 2015 BMW, huge difference. Fully compatible with factory stuff including iDrive controls.
