Get the wheel off & keep looking, with some leverage, something is really faarkt. But you already know that.

Cheers GW :miner:

yeh i was thinkin something along the lines of ball joints or maybe tie rod ... question is how to check it ? or should i just take it to a mechanic?

You said "when i put the ratchet on to undo the wheel i could actually move the wheel a bit (from left to right) with a bit of force"

I said "Get the wheel off & keep looking, with some leverage".

What I mean is get further in, front end on axle stands, wheels chocked, car in gear, hand brake on, offending wheel off, head down, crowbar/piece of pipe/jemmy bar/tyre lever/something that you can work the wheel hub & linkages up down side to side with while you have a good clear view of what is going on or trying to come off, is loose or rooted, whatever. Could be lucky & have some nuts/bolts that just need tightening up. After you have determined that the strut is not about to colapse or some other nightmare, then arrange taking it to a mechanic if you cannot fix it yourself.

My other 2c.

...i could actually move the wheel a bit (from left to right) with a bit of force really got no idea what it could be anyone got any ideas?

That would usually be a wheel bearing. Try moving the wheel top to bottom - if you get the same sort of movement, then it will almost certainly be the wheel bearing. Might just need a bit of grease and a tighten up. Might be shot.

Yeah. Usually if it's making a clunking noise, or some really weird grinding combined with squeaking sound when traveling over speed bumps, or just a general imperfection in the road, it will most likely be what the guys above outlined. Although, you only really notice it at slow speeds and the faster you go, you won't be able to hear it.

Get in there and see what it could be, if it's fixable... do it yourself or if you're not confident, just get a Mechanic to look at it.

    • We have 2x Swifts and my plans for a Swift, unfortunately, do not extend to an intake and an exhaust. I've been having dirty thoughts about a 2.5L Suzi V6, AWD gearbag out of a suitable donor, rear floorpan graft to take the rear cradle from same, and either trumpets of evil or a small supercharger. If I'm going to make noise in a Swift, I want it to be anti-social, evil handling and rough. Probably need to be fully stripped inside, matt black paint, plastic windows, 7" wide wheels, big brakes, silly suspension, etc etc etc. I have no idea if any of the proposed driveline components could take the pain. But it would be a hoot finding out.
    • Really, anyone modifying a car isn't being financially smart. We're doing it for the things we love. And honestly, a high revving, light, NA car is actually pretty darn fun. I used to have a Swift Sport, and I miss that thing as a daily, and yes, doing something like some intake and exhaust stuff would have made minimal gains, but would have bought an even bigger smile
