Hi everyone,

I have recently purchased a R34 GTR.

I've been advised the car has had a Nismo clutch recently installed.

Been doing some research, i have found online that when the nismo clutch was installed - the dual mass flywheel would have been removed, hence why on idle there is a random rattle coming from the gearbox. As expected, the rattle does go away when you press your foot down on the clutch.

The car is completely stock, down to the original air box and exhaust. I will not be tracking the car and intend on leaving it in original condition (famous last words, i know).

I am looking for advice on how to remove the rattle. I am thinking about getting a standard dual mass flywheel refitted (i have a mate which has one with < 10,000KM in his work shop).

Dont know if this is a good idea, as i've also heard that getrags on idle are just noisy in general - even with the dual mass flywheel? Is this true? And would it be the same noise, as mine is quite pronounced.

My car is pretty quiet aswell, having the original exhaust - hence why you can hear everything.

Have and aftermarket clutch in my GTR and it also does the same thing. Didn't think it was an issue... a little annoying... think of it part of the character of the GTR

If you go back to stock clutch and flywheel you shouldnt get hardly any rattle, mine makes barely any sound. not sure if you can put the stock flywheel in with the nismo clutch though?...

I have driven a few with the rattle and i know where your coming from... i think if its annoying you too much, going back to standard is really the only option?...

Thanks for the insight, im not sure about the flywheel being interchangable either - will need to see.

Re-install a Dual Mass Flywheel..?

Is the clutch a single or twin plate?

Yea when you get a chance mate, will be good to see it, or just bring it along next weekend for the putty road cruise ha!

you can hear what a stock clutch sounds like then if you havent heard many, and compare them side by side..

Also if your going to leave it stock, theres not too much point in having a heavier than stock clutch, although the nismo twin plates are very nice, i will be going for one of them if i ever get around to putting -9s on my car ha.

Hi mate, no idea - wish I knew.

I remember my HKS twin plate had a rattle but only when you dis-engage the clutch (clutch pedal down) when idling.

Was the twin plates rattling around, until you had the clutch pedal up, there would be no noise.

But if you clutch is making the noise with out pushing the any of the pedals...

Like what Ben has said, it could just be that...

Or get it checked out by your mechanic.

Have taken it to 2 mechanics and 1 gearbox specialist. They all said it seems like normal noise for a 34 GTR with a bad ass heavy clutch in it, however its not normally this pronounced.

I was a bit worried intially thinking it may have been a larger issue with the gear box, wanted to get it sorted as ive only had the car for a week, only driven around 100km in it and its under warranty.

Have also done some research - found same info as below on various websites.

Because of the design and manufacturing processes made to create the improved clutch response provided by the sports clutch disc and lightweight flywheel and increased output, it is possible that the transmission or bearings may transmit a rumbling noise, compared to genuine Nissan parts. Transmission or gear noise is particularly likely to occur at idling or when accelerating or decelerating from the area around 2000rpm; however, this has no effect on quality or performance.

The rattling sound which is characteristic of six-speed manual transmissions, Getrag-equipped vehicles and S15 6-speed manual transmission vehicles, has been proven in actual vehicle testing to be reduced through the use of the G-max.

Have seen another mechanic about the rattle.

I have been advised that a replacement Exedy heavy duty clutch will stop the rattles and the existing flywheel in there can be reused.

But as the car most likely has a replacement flywheel in it - and the dual mass has been removed, i've heard its the actual flywheel that normally causes the rattle?

However other mechanics have advised that the current clutch in there can be kept and its the flywheel that needs to be replaced?

Or is it the case that both need to be replaced? Bit confused.

I know its hard to tell without ripping it apart to confirm whats inside, but any suggestions are appreciated.

Trying to get my head around all this, so cheers for the patience and wisdom in advance.

You will have to pull it out to have a look.

Replace the flywheel that is suited for they clutch in you have at the moment.

Or, replace it with a Exedy heavy duty clutch and flywheel.

Exedy make clutches for Nismo.

But having said that, when buying an Exedy clutch, that does not make it a Nismo clutch.

Exedy have the license to make the clutch kits for Nismo, but to Nismo Specs.

If you buy an Exedy clutch, you must use Exedy parts. Nismo clutch, use Nismo parts.

All good!

Replacing the clutch to suite the flywheel you have in at the moment will also work.

Which ever way or either way you go about it, as long as it gets rid of the rattle, that's what you want.

I thought it was the actual flywheel that was causing the rattle (as i dont believe its dual mass).

I was under the impression that it will always rattle unless it has a dual mass flywheel (it will still rattle but the dual mass flywheel will deaden the sound so you cant hear it?).. i hear the rattle in my car everytime i turn it off as the engine slows down etc, but dont hear it at all when idling.

Most people when changing clutches get the upgraded flywheel for lightness and perfromance and live with the rattle i thought...

Hey mate, I believe your spot on.

I've got the car booked in for next Tuesday to install a replacement original Nissan clutch and dual mass flywheel. (Will confirm the plan when its opened up).

However if anyone see's this and would be interested in a near new Nismo clutch + flywheel package for an R34 GTR, shoot me through a PM. Should have further details about it when it comes out.

If it is a nismo twin super copper mix clutch I could be interested mate, pending price and condition etc..

I plan to go with one of them when/if I go to -9s...

Either way let me know once you've got it sorted and we can go from.
