Here's something i pulled off autospeed

AutoSpeed: What are the advantages of drilled discs?

Steve Borg: They dissipate water and dirt, degas the pads (giving better braking distance) and also stay moderately cooler. But that's not an issue - I don't think - for street use. We guarantee our drilled discs to up to 700 degrees C - and they will withstand more than that - but you'd never exceed 450 degrees on the street. On the racetrack you'd probably get up to 600-700 degrees. Again, though, our rotors aren't sold as racing discs. And, of course, our drilled discs look the part - especially behind mag wheels. The slotted discs perform exactly the same and do exactly the same job - getting rid of the water, dust, gasses, deglazing the pads.

AutoSpeed: What are the disadvantages of drilled discs?

They are a little bit noisy - you do get a whirring noise. And, with our drilled and slotted rotors, you do lose about 10% pad life. In saying that, you gain in rotor life because the pad won't bite hard into the disc. If you let the pads glaze up, their material becomes harder than the cast iron of the rotor, and it then starts to bite in and create grooves. But, with slotted and drilled discs, that doesn't happen because you've always got a nice fresh pad surface running over the disc.

AutoSpeed: We have seen several sets of cracked drilled discs - how do you explain this?

Steve Borg: Look, I keep myself fairly fit, but I'd be crazy to jump out of bed and do a sprint without warming up. It's just like you don't take an engine and go racing without warming it up. It's the same for rotors. They're cast iron, they expand when they get hot, and you really need to warm them up before working them. Abuse them when they're cold and they'll crack. You don't have to warm them 'till they're red hot, so long as the heat sink is right through the rotor and it's not just the outside surfaces getting hot, it's fine.

I have PM'd dsturbd several times but looking at his profile, he's not been online since 9/5/04. I only know him through online chats so I can't really move this thing forward any more than its going. Gives everyone some time to save $$$ i guess. I'm still in need though...

Hi all,

One of the forum members here in WA, Dsturbd, has kindly offered to hook some members up with a great deal on brake components, in particular DBA 4000 slotted rotors and matching performance pads. I know i'm in need of some and a few people have also expressed a casual interest so I figure a group buy may be in order.  

Pricing has not been confirmed yet and obviously depends on numbers but bank around $250 each rotor and $65 for a set of pads. (Purely guesses)

Brett, heard from dsturbd on Wednesday who has been on holidays for the last little while. He said he'd have prices up on Thursday but so you can see, haven't seen anything as yet. I sent him another PM yesterday. Trust me, i'm on to it as much as i can.

    • Whoa, that's a name I've not see for a long time! Sorry to hear about the engine / turbo damage.  Fwiw with any engine problems it often really a case of just seeing what happens when it's apart, ymmv - I wouldn't rule out the possibility that the damage isn't even from the turbo failure, or possibly from a combination.  The airflow between cylinders isn't dead even, injectors can go off over time as well, with the turbos overboosting if you didn't have upgraded fuel system there could have possibly been a bit of leaning out - stock triggering is often a bit unreliable by this age too.  Basically its an old engine and a few things could have been going on, and you won't know how much work is needed until the engine is apart.  
    • I'm just shocked there's a euro driver on our roads who is thinking of other road users and not attempting to blind everyone. I wonder if Prank uses his indicator too...
    • Its hard to tell really. The Q50 owner's forum talks about it a lot and has quite a few people directly affected, but no idea what % of cars sold actually had the block replaced. Also, there seem to be 2 distinct issues which both get diagnosed by Infiniti as requiring a block replacement (no wonder they are going broke) 1. "Porous block" where coolant mixes with oil through thin or poorly cast parts of the block 2. Head coolant gallery plugs not sealing. If I was noticing engine coolant loss I'd start with cooling system pressure test (as always) and then I'd pull the cam covers and reseal the coolant gallery plugs on both side before worrying about a potentially porous block.  If neither of those did the trick it would be put in a second hand engine out of japan; I haven't checked pricing but I'm sure there are plenty around by now as they've been in production 10+ years
    • To clarify what I posted above, I thought you both had a situation where it cancelled sooner one way than the other.....if it is reasonably even where it cancels in either direction that is probably normal (consider gentle movements like lane changes, you don't want it to need half a turn of lock to turn the indicators off)
    • Son, in this country, that is a piece of Gyprock. f**king drywall. FFS! I also like the autocorrect of trailer to tablet. I was reading it and thing, "what the hell drugs is he on?" Then the photo made it clear enough.
