My First Amd/ati Build

evening gents,

closet geek here, just wanted you guys' blessing/comments/criticism on this build im planning on picking up this week

its a bit overkill for what im gna use it for which is just everyday computing and watching movies and tv shows. I've no real interest in gaming (current computer is a pentium 4) but i might pick up a basic FPS like cs GO or something (cod and bf series are too much for me).

tbh i went the AMD due to the everyday computing performance and i could afford a flagship piece which is always a good gimmick to get sucked into

here goes;

Case: Corsair Obsidian 650D - $210

one of the cleaner cases with nice cable management properties

Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth 990FX - $199

good feedback with this mobo for the price with the TUF gimmicks, part of the reason i chose amd as the equivalent intel Sabertooth was $275

PSU: Corsair AX 850 - $250

was between this or the Seasonic 850W for $320, i thought 2nd place would be sufficient

CPU: AMD 8150 Black Series

just going for the gimmicks here over the 8120 ($185) it is a bit of a rort, could change mind but i think il end up with the 8150. I understand the i5 2500K/ i7 2600K is a better card for gaming, 3D and vid editing but since it was for browsing and just everyday computing i felt the 8150 suited my needs better

GPU: Sapphire HD7850 OC - $259

pretty set on this as the MSI version was $280 but had 3 heatpipes over the Sapphires 2 but im not pushing this system so i thought i could stinge here

RAM: Corsair 8gb (2x4gb) Vengence - $77

HDD: Seagate Barracuda - $99

Display: 2 x Dell Ultrasharps 23 or 24" - hopefully around $220-280 ea on sale

that's pretty much it, im a bit of a sucker for gimmicks hence the lavish motherboard and case aswell as the 8150 over the 8120 (70$ dearer)

i will defend the PSU and the motherboard as id like to keep the build as reliable as possible (based on gimmicks/features and user feedback) but that was the thinking behind the parts

righto, rip into it and let me know how much of a muppet i am

I'd forget the expensive case and put the cash towards Intel. End of the day AMD CPUs are still so far behind the pace of Intel performance it is simply a waste of your money.

So I'll put Intel numbers below...

If you look @ Case + Mobo + CPU - you have $600 to play with which give you...

CPU - Intel Core i5 2500K - $215

Mobo - Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD5-B3 Motherboard - $260

Case - CoolerMaster CM 690 II Advanced USB3.0 - $115

Or if you want to keep the Obsidian get the below mobo (will still be quite good, just less features)

Mobo - Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3 Motherboard - $140

Don't get too caught up with the Z68 vs Z77 chipset. I cannot see much to support one being "that much" better, just ensure you update the Z86 board

cool cheers for the feedback, that was why i was thinking of getting the 8120 and OCing it, that way im $150-200 up which could go towards one of the ultrasharps.

the prob with me is that if i went intel i'd like to spec it to a i7 2600k and a nice mobo either the UD5/UD7 which would be completely beyond my means.

the budget isnt the issue, i just was trying to balance my realistic needs and my e-penis and the AMD let me think that, where as with the intel sys id have to invest $2-300 more for the similar marketing tier (not performace) products

all things point towards the i5 which bugs me becuase i want to think the AMD FX series are better for everyday computing

will seriosly consider it, thanks a heap

The 2600k doesnt get you much more than the 2500k, you'll still hit 4ghz on air (well, closer to 4.4ghz) with a 2500k.

I wouldnt say "investing" more, just allocating your funds better as you don't need a $200 case :)

I would do what nismoid said and get the i5.

Considering you arent going to play any of the intensive games (BF3 & MW series) i wouldnt bother with the extra outlay for a i7.

Not to mention they arent as thirsty for power, and generate less heat than the AMD bulldozer. (Better for summer)

I would also splash out and spend more on a better mobo, i have bought cheap mobos before and they dont have the best features or they just dont last long, especially if you are going to OC the CPU.

      I left the ceramic coating off this bit, hopefully it just comes off after a few drives.   The gap between the spokes is too tight for anything on a stick, its only marginally bigger than my finger. I have to use a brush to get in there and its a big reason why I thought I'd try the coating.   Absolutely will do. I have EBC Blue Stuff pads to put on the front which will make them a bit dirtier. I'm hoping a pressure wash will just get most off. The shine is different to most, its very thin but seems very well 'attached' so hopefully it lasts.

      Barrels don't need to be shiny clean. But they are certainly nicer when they are not polluted with years of brake dust, and worse the rotting corpses of the last 17 balance weight sticky pads scattered all around.

      Yeah, type a special character like ^ or | to initiate the equivalent of the "at"ing for thread links. Although, it might not get any easier to manage. Imagine 30 or 40 threads that kinda match what you want, and the one you want is lost after a long list of useless ones. The magic keyword version I proposed would be a manual effort to set up each case. More of a directed effort from the greybeards to facilitate exposure of useful content. I'm not against the auto complete stuff being considered - maybe por que no los dos? (And where I said "triggered automatically" in my OP, I meant "triggered accidentally". Of course I want it to be automatic!!)

      Ah yes, fair enough! I was purely thinking about cleaning the spokes and front of the wheel with the mitt. For the barrel the rag on a stick makes more sense. I've tried cleaning the barrels on mine and gave up in frustration. Between brakes being in the way or spokes being in the way and limited space to constantly move the car front and back it was just too annoying. The barrel being as shiny as the rest of the wheel sounds amazing though. At this point I'm not even sure if they have the same surface finish on mine. But I feel inspired now to find out.
