Its fairly common for the M35's starter to die, mine went from over cranking it when the battery was low, blew the winding apart near the commutator. I know the parts are available but you will need to find a competent repairer locally, or just do what I did and buy another. Its the same as a V35 2.5dd so there are plenty of spare ones floating about.

The 3.5L starter is a little chunkier I think, perhaps that would be a good upgrade if it fits?

There ordered. He ordered 10 to put on the shelf at his work. I can tell you there gonna be a shit load cheaper than genuine lol. He also has all the rebuild parts. Mine sounds totally different with new brushes it must of been half stuffed when I bought the car .
