If you want something just for reading books, you cannot go past a Kindle.

Battery life is measured with a calendar and the non backlit screen is so easy to read. Someone has spent a lot of time developing the screens on Kindles to be good for reading and have completely nailed it.

If you want something you can browse the web on too, perhaps a Motorola Xoom? Can pick up a 32Gb wifi for <$400. I wouls steer clear of the really budget knock off $200 tabs. I know a couple people wit them and while they work, just, they are pretty shit. The biggest issue is they run Android 2 and won't be updated. This is a mobile phone OS and is inappropriate for a tablet.

as cowboy said, as far as ebook readers go, they are a completely different animal to a tablet. they are designed to do one thing and they do it much better than anything else. battery life is in the weeks, not hours like a tablet is. to put it into perspective, they say that a kindle battery will last about a month of constant use with the wifi turned off, and 10 days of constant use with the wifi turned on. i think they also cause less eye strain when reading for long periods of time as they are more like looking at a book

I have a Kobo wifi.. it's fine for reading but I have never used the wifi because it's reaaaaally slow.

Mine cost $90 but I would probably recommend getting a Kindle/tablet.

Have actually been using my iPad lately though.. it's pretty good but the eBook reader is definitely easier to read for long periods of time.

Don't get a tablet in place of an ebook reader. Reading on an LCD/OLED display is horrible.

I have a Galaxy Tab and a Sony E-Reader, and can honestly say my E-Reader shits all over the galaxy tab. I can read books on the sony for hours, yet on the tab I get tired really quickly and have to put it down.

Like has been said, e-readers are built for a purpose, and the Kindle is the best built one available. Sony e-reader hasn't got the support in Australia, so I had to root it to get any books on it.
