Roy
I am real interested to see how the build goes. I have the rods, pistons, cranks, oil pumps, water pumps, cams and valve springs etc all for the RB24 using Tomei 82mm pistons. Interested to know what pistons you are using for that price, mine cost almost 4 times as much If they do the job well then for about 3k it seems they would be able to build my engine Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/399466-to-rebuild-or-not-to-rebuild/page/2/#findComment-6348651 Share on other sites
OzzySkyline07
Not 100% sure mate? I asked if they were forged and he said no, but they are a custom piston which he has used in several rebuilds and assured me they will do the job fine. I no he is going to tell me that anyway but CREATD do sound and look pretty solid so fingers crossed!!! Bsa
Might be acl cast items I did tones of research when thinking of building a BMW motor they make a 82mm piston with the same rod height as most rb engines Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/399466-to-rebuild-or-not-to-rebuild/page/2/#findComment-6348678 Share on other sites
OzzySkyline07
Yeah that sounds about right. Im shattered I cant afford forged pistons on my budget! What was your conclusion on the cast pistons? Bsa
Stock rb motors run cast pistions and some run high hp for years if they are acl they are made very well If I can find the one I have I'll take photos Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/399466-to-rebuild-or-not-to-rebuild/page/2/#findComment-6348881 Share on other sites
Manuel Kasko
If you dont mind me asking why did you ask us to rebuild or not to rebuild? when the whole thing was already under way... Pretty pointless for all the guys to give you so much info for you to say its already started Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/399466-to-rebuild-or-not-to-rebuild/page/2/#findComment-6348903 Share on other sites

StevenCJR31
I agree with the above, a freshened up 30 bottom end with 25DET head would of been better suited for his needs and wouldve worked out close to the same price as his 20 rebuild but heaps torquier Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/399466-to-rebuild-or-not-to-rebuild/page/2/#findComment-6348958 Share on other sites
51NNA
Yep, for 6k he could of had a rb25 with 300kw easy. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/399466-to-rebuild-or-not-to-rebuild/page/2/#findComment-6348970 Share on other sites

OzzySkyline07
I started the topic over the weekend but I had to wait for the topic to be approved and then for people to start commenting! My car started making a ticking/knocking sound last week when holding revs through each gear while driving. I took it to my local mechanic who checked it out and gave me a fair idea as to what the problem was, but he wasn't 100% sure and recommended I take it to a Jap tuner for them to check it out which took 2 days as they are a busy workshop. I then started the topic while waiting to hear back from CREATD about my options. And at that point I still hadn't approved the start of the rebuild as I was wanting more information on wether to sell it or rebuild it. MOST people on here were very helpful and informative which is what I was after... Not over ego people just out to compare the size of their 'engines'. As I said earlier, my car is a daily driver so I needed it fixed yesterday. If I had the time/knowledge/space and tools then sure, I would have done it for your supposed 3-4k. But dropping in a RB25 requires a engineers certificate which takes time and more money, plus a new ECU... More money. I figured I already have an engine so why buy another one when I can just rebuild mine. I will be fitting the HKS 2530 or 2540 to it, and I think my 6k budget will be well spent in the outcome. So thanks for your input, good and bad. And I'll change the topic to 'RB20 to RB23 rebuild' if that makes you happy... Although the topic name was correct for half of the comments... And then when the rebuild is finished, I'll change it again for you all. Cheers again to the people that have helped. Roy
Yep, for 6k he could of had a rb25 with 300kw easy. Can't agree you have any chance that you can get 300rwkws RB25 setup in in R32 for 6k!!!! Like any post , its all the opinion of the poster and you obviously say what you say because its your belief....but NO WAY As cheap a budget as I could DIY (Damage it yourself): - RB25 : $1500 - 300kw capable turbo: $1500 - ECU, injectors and tune : $2000 (depending on ECU you chose the cost will float based on need for AFM or not) - So that leaves 1k for labour, fluids, timing belt, water pumps, tensioner/idler bearings. Oil lines, water lines, dump pipe, cooler pipe changes. Wiring changes to R32 loom. Re-gassing aircon That's being conservative with numbers and doing all labour yourself. You have a cooked RB20 you could maybe get a few dollars for...but then you have an 300rwks RB25 for maybe around 8k that will most likely fry the std RB20 gearbox as that is most peoples experiences. Anyway, I think people need to chill out...the same old people are always jumping down everyone's throats like it was their money being spent. People ask for advice, it gets offered, often more then bad (including by me) than good but I dont get the attacks in the Forced Induction forum these days Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/399466-to-rebuild-or-not-to-rebuild/page/2/#findComment-6349145 Share on other sites
DVS JEZ
Roy its his choice at the end of the day but as said everyone has voted against the rebuild including urself so thats why we are dissapointed that he didnt even think about the other options Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/399466-to-rebuild-or-not-to-rebuild/page/2/#findComment-6349211 Share on other sites

Hanaldo
Surely that's another reason to not go down the rebuild path though. I'll be interested to see how close to budget it comes in as well, I have never once managed to do anything to my car within budget. Even simple bolt on stuff quickly blows out of control. Best of luck OP. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/399466-to-rebuild-or-not-to-rebuild/page/2/#findComment-6349231 Share on other sites
DVS JEZ
sounds like he didnt have time to think about it much... its a daily for him, he needs it back asap obviously... Much quicker to bolt in a 2nd hand motor. Manuel Kasko
Best of luck as well I was just pointing out that decision was made before anyone posted so why lead people on to believe they are helping you providing paragraphs of knowledge Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/399466-to-rebuild-or-not-to-rebuild/page/2/#findComment-6349241 Share on other sites
75coupe
yep secong hand motor is quicker, but he wants the upgrade of a built one to be safe... I can understand his thinking, just a shame he didnt have more time to consider all options fully... and yeah budgetting and cars dont work, add 20-30% onto the estimate... its the little things that add up...
