I think i've been scammed. Need advice

Long story short, I sold my old car to buy my Skyline,

today I get 2 letters in the mail.

They are traffic fines for my old car which was sold more than 2 months ago!!

Now sounds simple, show them the transfer form and its all good. Problem is, I sold my old car without a RWC on the promise the buyer was going to get his mate who is a mechanic to do a RWC on it, he gave me the money so I was happy. Now in Victoria anyway selling a car without a RWC is illegal so I have no idea what to do. And I can't get in contact with the buyer as the fines have come from the Tasmanian Police?! so it seems he has moved to Tassie with my old car.

Now to make things more complicated, my car had a canary on it when I sold it. According to my canary the registration should have been suspended last month. I have no idea what I can do, does anybody know what the penalties are for selling a car without a RWC?

dont worry about it , they dont care about how you shold it, if the fines incure points just write down sold prior to traffic offence, if the fines dnt incure points just pay them and get it over with.

write a Statutory declaration that your car has been sold, otherwise report it stolen if the other party wont pay the fines.

See how quickly they get pulled up then!

Umm, I do believe you can sell the car without a RWC. BUT the buyer needs one to transfer the rego in VIC. Other states its not needed. so nothing naughty there. I sold a VIC registered car to a guy in WA, no RWC, no problems. He just took it into the registration centre to transfer the rego. I didnt inform VICROADS.

Make an anonymous phone call to the local liscencing centre and see what they say, ask them if you sell a car, what paper work do you need to complete. And also ask if the person resides in another state do you need to provide RWC or notice of disposal.

It is perfectly legal to sell a car without a RWC. Generally however the date of the received transfer form will mean you are not liable for the fines. If this wasn't handed in (you each have to hand in your copies) you may be in trouble.

I reckon he didn't even bother to transfer it and just driving around on the old plates, he probably would have got new plates if he had to re-register it.
