LotusGTR
How long will this take? Was planning to do it Monday. Got to be at the boat 18.30. Google maps say a little over 7 hours which I figured I'd better. Local guy I met said Hobart to Strahan alone is 5 hours.....More locals said there might be snow there too and the road closed. What say you Tassie Crew? Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/401048-hobart-to-strahan-to-burnie-to-dev/ Share on other sites
Mr. Untouchable
Mate its a fair haul. From Hobart to strahan is prob gonna be 4 and a half hours at best. At this time of year the road well parts of it anyway are never dry. Even slighty green/mossy in places 7 hours is about right really. The road between Queenstown and Strahan is mega windy. So basically I wouldnt count on doing it quicker but allow for it to be slower, weather could slow you up. Prob will see some snow but doubt it will be enough to close that road, but you never know Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/401048-hobart-to-strahan-to-burnie-to-dev/#findComment-6371626 Share on other sites
Mr. Untouchable
But if you stop for lunch, do it in strahan. Restraunt there called Hamers, do a pretty fine steak and stock our local premo beer ;-) right on the waterfront Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/401048-hobart-to-strahan-to-burnie-to-dev/#findComment-6371629 Share on other sites
LotusGTR
Thanks mate. Sounds touch and go. Will consider an East Coast route as a backup. Mr. Untouchable
Just keep an eye on the weather mate. West coast road is fantastic, east coast is also pretty good. Just beware of the po po on the east coast. There's usually one trolling near the big buckland straight right up to orford. They don't have police on the west coast. It's the wild west. Mr. Untouchable
And don't stop in queenstown, it's a time warp. It's about 1876. Like "deadwood" keep on truckin til strahan, much better. Small but good Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/401048-hobart-to-strahan-to-burnie-to-dev/#findComment-6371680 Share on other sites
LotusGTR
Cheers for the popo heads up. Whst's the best place for the weather report? BOM or something local? Still keeping an open mind on west coast. If I run out of time I can miss Hellyeah Gorge and Burnie. XRATED
Def worth the drive! just give yourself a little more time or some options. Another thing to add is 98 is pretty scarce on the ground up that way. As Jack says, west coast is not heavily po po ulated. LotusGTR
OK, weather is at worst wet. Low temps are at around 9 degrees to no chance of snow or ice. I'll have to average 80klms/h including fuels stops to make it. I'll detour via West Coast if I think I'm struggling for time when I get to Queenstown. Fuel is at Rosebery and Strahan too if needed so either way I'm covered. The old Porker is getting 15 l/100 even with hard driving so that's a great relief compared to the GTR.... Big day tomorrow........ Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/401048-hobart-to-strahan-to-burnie-to-dev/#findComment-6372928 Share on other sites
jangles
good plan, you can change your route multiple times, even if you made it to tullah, then came back over the mountain past cradle.. (good fun) would cut multiple hours off. The east coast had flooding last couple of days, so the roads probably wont be much good. LotusGTR
Cheers. So by cradle mountain do you mean via Middlesex up to Dev, rather than Bernie to Dev? If so that's about an hour saved, which could be critical. I'd miss Hellyer Gorge but I guess you can't have it all sometimes. jangles
Yep that's exactly what I mean, come down through moina, wilmot, forth and to dev. From a driving and excitement point of view I'd go that. But that of course is if you aren't doing strahan. Could call In and do dove lake/cradle if haven't already also. LotusGTR
Well I made it. Hobart to Strahan was 3 hours and 18 minutes. Not much traffic on the roads (whistling emoticon). Took another 2 hours and 40 minutes to get from Strahan to Devonport. 6 hours all up. Had a mishap in that my passenger side exhaust fell off.......drove 30 klms with it dragging on the ground (nowhere safe to stop pissing down with rain) before it fell off just as I was pulling over. Damaged the rear bar. Is so loud now I have to wear ear plugs to drive it. I've now got the ferry ride to recover as I'm buggered. Oh, and that was the drive of my life. Utterly sublime. Thanks for your input fellas. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/401048-hobart-to-strahan-to-burnie-to-dev/#findComment-6374279 Share on other sites

Mr. Untouchable
Good to hear you enjoyed the drive. Tassie doesn't have a shitload going for it, but some of the roads are top notch.
