Flush the cooler with kero or similar I guess. Make sure there are no metal particles in the oil that comes out, it could mean the engine blew before it was removed.

You can test the thermostat in boiling water, most open around 80 degrees.

I am in a similar position as I have recently acquired a genuine R33 GTR N1 oil cooler in mint condition.

I would like to use it in my GTR so I am going to flush it with the same mixture that you clean intercoolers with - Equal parts of kero and mentholated spirits. You would be amazed how much oil this mixture gets out of what looks like a clean intercooler.

If anyone has any better ideas I am open to suggestions.
