um having an ecu cut an engine is a bad solution to a big problem

Why? The first thing I would do if my oil pressure gauge started beeping would be switch the engine off; ECU can do it much faster.

cutting power is not the solution to anything -it is an emergency measure. I have gone to great lengths (won't detail them again) to fix the known RB oil control problems - having the ecu cut the power in case of a failure is a last resort in case everything else fails which i plan not to be the case!!

the output functionality on the vi-pec is very good, much better then the motec imo. and yes you can switch a output when fuel pressure or oil pressure goes below a certain value... that output being a kill switch.

motec is a great unit but its not worth being used in the street car market since vipec / link / haltech / adaptronic ecu's have caught up and excelled motec in many ways.

guiltytoy can you explain how vipec output functionality is so much better than motec ?

gutilty toy can you also tell us how and why v88 have excelled motec in so many ways ? say against the M84 for example ?

Maybe you are just an ignorant bible basher, no nothing know it all's like yourself are a dime a dozen and make the small number of educated people feel like Stephen Hawkings. Thanks

Walk- why are ur posts always farked up.

I don't think he sees the html shit in his posts Jez lol, now you look like a jerk

Im not getting a Motec, end of story.

Guilt Toy, you say the Vipec is able to do what i want, what about the Link.

Cheers.

If i was going to spend $2500 on an ECU id get an autronic SM4

like i said before mate, the link is just a re-badged vipec but it has a few less options. those options that the vipec has that the link does not are not required for your application so choose whichever one your tuner deals in.

also the link does NOT have peek and hold drivers on the storm _OR_ the extreme where the vipec v44 and v88 does. if you look on the link website it says that it has saturated drivers, not peek and hold, there was a version of the extreme (earl silver colour models) that did have peek and hold drivers but it was dropped back to saturated drivers, the web site was updated when this happened but the pdf specifications sheet it a little outdated.

basically if your going to upgrade your injectors at a later date, the vipec will give you more options without having to wire in fugly resistors like you will NEED to do with the low end Link product.

so just go with what your tuner will sell you, he will love you for it if you buy the ecu through him as it puts more money in his pocket so he will give you a better tune and be more into your car that way.

as for the motec vs link product, i tune both ecu's, infact ive tuned more motecs then vi-pecs and I am a vipec dealer, and i prefer the vipec any day of the week for any application, its much nicer to use and much more fun, (yes work is fun when you have the right tools)

sometimes i need to fraps the motec screen when doing a run on high hp cars because the motec does not have logging on standard without having to pay extra money, and customers do not understand that its needed in many cases and they don't have any options opened on the motec, when the vi-pec / link has everything opened out of the box!

motec has been around longer and they know how to market their product, yes they up there with the best but that does not make them the best :)

good luck mate.

Thanks for your input Guilt Toy.

Well i shouldn't have an issue with saturated drivers so long as i use high impedance injectors. I've got Xspurts going in which are high impedance.

My tuner is a Link dealer. Yes he's been trying to sell me one, but he fully understands that i want an ecu that has the most features for my application. That being an ECU with the most amount of inputs and outputs that are very customizable and configurable along with an awesome tuning side of things as well.

Its my understanding that the Vipec and Link will both happily talk with a racepak dash via can bus?

I guess so since the Link Display can communicate with can bus

i find it funny some of the stuff people write on forums ! like output functionality ? that means what ??an output is something you can program to do something you ask it ? most hi-end ecu's not just vipec/link can cut engines with low oil pressure can compensate for fuel pressure drop or fuel temp but;it always comes back to the person tuning the can and setting up the functions that the ecu will control

eg 1 an unnamed person had there car at an event not so long ago and had a friend driving it and it went bang in a big wayhe looked at the data log and the engine was said to have spun up past 10500 rpm he said it was the drivers fault for not changing when the shift light was on at 9k rpm i say someone didn't have soft and hard rev cuts

eg 2 drag racer staging up uses nos only to bring the convertor up on trans brake but lights go green before up on trans lets go of brake and leans out because gas still spraying and could have set up in the ecu so this didnt happen

eg 3 guy updated software in ecu and ran car up on dyno motor went bang as after update the car lost the trigger to run the water meth injection

im saying is any ecu can be configured to run any motor very well but it's only as smart as the person tuning it !

but to try an say one ecu is better than another becouse of better idle control and output functionality is a little rich

yes i do love stirring up some people on here !

Walk510. Stop posting in this thread. Im not interested in a Motec and your posts are of no relevance to this thread. Your posts are also impossible to read.

Thank you.

What is the internal closed loop boost control like on the two ECUs?

    • Hi. A little bit of an update. It maybe(hope not) looks like i would need a new tranny(it would be "maybe" a cheaper or better option anyway) So i need some info. I know i need a different propshaft(i can make custom one) LSD is not a problem cuz the engine will be still(for now) N/A RB20. So if i buy RB25DET NEO tranny...is there something else i need? I read something about push/pull type but i do not know if i need to "change" something or i can just plug n play onto my engine a go? Thanks for the advice
    • Good morning all, Bit of a random question but figured I’d finally throw it out after wondering for a long while. Before I start, I'm hoping to do this purely out of personal preference. I think it would look better at night, and don't mind at all spending a few hours and dollars to get it done. I've copied this from a non-Skyline specific forum, so I apologize for the explanation of our headlight switch setup that we all know. Here we go: Zero lights (switch off) Parking lights (switch position 1) being a rectangular marker on the outside of the housing, my low beam being the projector in the centre (position 2), and a high beam triggered by my turn signal stalk. Most North American cars I’ve owned of this era have power to the amber corner (turning indicator) light as part of the first switch (parking lights). I’d love to have these amber corners receive power when the headlights and parking lights are on (headlight switch), yet still blink when using the turn signal which is of course a separate switch. Hopefully I’ve explained my question correctly. Is anyone aware of a way in which I might be able to achieve this? Thanks in advance
    • My heads are cathedral port! It's likely possible, but I don't want to add any extra moving parts (I know they don't move) between the heads, manifolds, etc. It will also affect how injectors/fuel rails etc sit and I don't really know if it would change how the FAST manifold goes/sits/fits. I have the LS6 steam pipes already as I have a very late LS1 block so it should be fine. I couldn't find anyone who had ever actually used one for this purpose, it seems 100% of people grind the water pump. The thermal spacers are 12mm and are half way to the cost of the newer water pump anyhow... so if it comes to that I suppose I'd rather buy a new pump. The bearing in the pump I do have is a little.. clunky, but it hasn't done that much time and I never noticed it when the car was together in the past few years, so..
    • The bushing has failed, not all that uncommon for a car of this age. Any mechanic should be able to push in a new bushing for you, or you can probably buy the entire lower control arm, complete with bushes.
    • Could you not use "thermal" spacers to give the clearance, like the ones I used between the blower and head? That raised the manifold height by around 10-15mm Albeit the ones I used were for cathedral ports, but I assume they have similar for rectangular ports????
