the motec is still a decent unit... the cal file switching on the motec is far better then any map switching on the vi-pec... on motec you can switch whole cal files and multiple tunes for different cars on the one ecu buy flicking a switch instead of loading the map with software like you have to do with the link / vi-pec, and you can actually switch the cal files while the car is running, so in the nissan patrols what i do with the motec is we put race fuel in the sub tank, and put pump fuel in the main tank, we use the sub tank switch to switch the race gas / pump gas cal files in the motec....

so they are cruising down the highway, a ferrari is commin up, push the switch, cal file and fuel changes automatically, wait 15 seconds for the pump gas to exit the surge tank and race gas starts flowing to the fuel rail, f**k the ferarri a few times then switch it back to pump gas and they are on their way!

but appart from that... i have to think really hard to find any other things that the motec has over the Vi-pec or haltech.

And that doesn't matter to me at all. I dont need that feature. Boost map switching maybe. But the Link can do that.

My more main concern is the ECU making complex decisions based on Oil pressure vs RPM, Boost Pressure vs Fuel Pressure etc.

What do you think of the Link KnockBlock GT? Is it a good investment to have it wired into the G4 full time. Or will the standard knock readers on board be ok. I dont intend on running the engine close to knock so i dont think it would be feasible for me.

Its crap how the Link G4 doesn't use the factory knock sensors.

Im sure i already mentioned this, but the OLD wire in G4 had knock sensor inputs, but when Vipec came on, they requested that the Link version didnt have it, or electronic throttle control.

I guess to make the Vipec look like a better unit.

A bit wrong there.

The OLD and NEW Xtreme's still have 2x knock sensor inputs. I'm looking at the Instruction manual from their website in front of me. Both the silver and red Xtreme's have 2x knock inputs. Lighting, atom, rx and storm do not.

The E-throttle i am unsure about though.

Ahh OK, it must just be the G4 plug-in, which I have :(

Just had a look at the manual for the plugin R34 and sorry no they do not have knock inputs. The KnockBlock would be a really good idea in your case.

I'm just wondering if its going to be good for the wire in units as they have knock sensors.

As far as the manual says, the G4 extreme used to be exactly the same as the current V88. Most likely the current G4 extreme had its features removed so people would have a reason to buy the Vipec over the Link.

The hardware is mostly the same. They have the same boards, just with different outputs on each. The processor is exactly the same.

I haven't tried the Vipec software, but I would wager that it would also be pretty much a copy of the Link software, with the logos replaced with Vipec ones.

In your situation, the added features of the Vipec (current controlled injector drivers, electronic TB control) are useless, so it would be waste to buy one... unless for some retarded reason you plan to use those features in the future.

I personally prefer the Link because they have more information available on their website. Although I'm sure 98% of it would apply to both anyway.

The factory ones aren't reliable that is why.

i have seen the vi-pec version that link made, and its very nice.

HOWEVER i never used it, we sold it to someone else. I don't even use my K-MON anymore, reason being is that you can buy all these fancy tools and listen to whats going on inside the engine but at the end of the day if you really know how to tune you don't need it, you can feel when something is up and the engine is not behaving correctly, and the engine will not knock unless the user does something stupid or you use cheap bullshit parts that changes state.

just tune and go. forget all the bullshit. i will only listen to the engine after i think something is wrong and i have time to stuff around with it. same with all your sensor output functions, its all a big wank, if you build your setup PROPERLY you don't need all that bullshit.

just get a incar fuel pressure gauge and a oil pressure gauge and you will notice when something changes.

Letting ecu monitor critical engine data and making a ddcision if something goes wrong is much quicker than a human can react. That is jf said human even notices something wrong.

yeah well good luck with it dude, i am sure you will have issues with false positives, wide band sensors can sometimes give bad readings on a run and also the fuel pressure may spike a voltage without it actually losing pressure like the voltage suggests and your engine will cut out while you are trying to get out in traffic, or make that gap infront of that truck? it could seriously f**k you up dude nothing worse then the engine switching off when you need it the most, its murphys law its going to bite you on the ass believe me.

seriously man, the only one i would connect to a kill switch is oil pressure. even then i probly would not even bother.

it can however be handy for logging purposes only.

i will only listen to the engine after i think something is wrong and i have time to stuff around with it. same with all your sensor output functions, its all a big wank, if you build your setup PROPERLY you don't need all that bullshit.

Do you at least use headphones to listen for very mild knock? When my engine was right on the edge of det we couldn't hear it from in the car but with headphones you could hear the faintest rattle, you wouldn't want to put a car out on the street in that state as if the temperature goes up 10c, your fuel is bad and drops a point or two in octane then you'll have an engine that is a walking time bomb.

Not as bad when ur running race gas or higher octane as tey would have over there. Much easier to tune with in regards to knock.

I dont intend on having all of these inputs cut the engine if something goes wrong. Rich and retard is what i'd like to do for most things. I think there was some mis-understanding with what i was doing.

If oil pressure drops at a certain point, i want the ECU to control the accusump's electric valve.

If the accusump is not able to prevent the surge (extended amount of time the engine is starving of oil) then there is a second oil pressure sensor monitoring oil pressure at the engine. If the ECU detects a drop here, i won't cut the engine, but rather have the ECU fire an output for a big f**k off warning lamp. This lamp will be illuminated under many conditions, but if the lamp comes on, i back off, return to pits and see what went wrong by looking at the logged data.

Yes there are many things that may cause nuisance alarms. Thats something i'll have to work out and decide what is necessary to have as a warning.

I'm building my entire care to prevent these problems in the first place. IE, stupidly large baffled and gated sump, proper oil control mods, reliable fuel setup etc etc.

But at the end of the day, having the ECU monitor the engines critical systems and then reacting if there is a fault is something i believe is a good thing.
