ok i know this is a skyline fourm but heres a question thats been bugging me as im saving up for a GTR. why dose a 20+ year old car cost so much in comaprison to any other sports car of its age?

sw20= 4-8K, gti-r = 5-7k, wrx = 5-14k, supraTT = 15-20k, common whore 90's SS ??, 300zx 0-10k, mitsu gto 5-16K?(these are all jap cars of similer age im also thinking of getting just because of the bang for buck factor seems a lot better). im also affraid that the gtr wil depricate a lot in coming times, ie end up selling it for 1/4 of what i bought it for =s chance of this happening?

The aussie delivered GTR sold for $100K+ when it came out in 1990, alot more than most, if not all of the other cars mentioned. The GTR is a weapon and a legend, hence the price. How can you possibly compare it to a 90's SS commodore !!!!!

To answer your Qs with Qs...

* Have you ever driven a GTR before?

* Have you even been in one with an experienced driver at the wheel?

* Do you know just how upgradeable they are compared to the cars you mentioned?

* Why do you think a collectible car should depreciate even half as much as others?

* Did you know that wear and tear parts are still obtainable on these?

* Do you understand the technology that goes into a car like this?

* Why did CAMS incur weight penalties on the R32 GTR in racing 20 years ago and still fail to stop them winning?

If you answered "No" to all or nearly all of the above, buy...

1) from JB HiFi the Chevron DVD of Bathurst Races 91/92

2) from Motive DVD their #11 Issue with the SAU Organised R32 GTR 21st Anniversary Run

Something is worth what someone will pay for it.. Gtirs are mostly shagged, will need a gearbox rebuild... And because they have always been cheaper have been bought by people who could not afford a Gtr, and therefore often cannot afford the upkeep, not being a dick about it, but that will also mean they are not as well maintained. Have a look at R34s, still north of $40k for all but a few. R32s have had their depreciation hit already, from here it will either be slow, or they will appreciate. Unless we run out of oil..

gee weird, a $120,000 car that was sold here in tiny quantities and then imported only by enthusiasts costs more than a VN SS commodore that sold for like $1.63 when new....

HOLY SHITBALLS!!!! STOP THE FUCKING PRESSES!!!!!

Apart from anything else you're comparing apples to oranges. The only car really similar to the GTR is the TT Supra and you've said yourself they're sitting around 15-20k. Much like the GTR, why not jump up and down on supraforums?

The only Apple to pear example is the gto.

Both twin turbo.

Both awd/4wd.

Both 6 cylinders.

Both have climate control.

This is where they start to go their separate ways....

As mentioned, a lot of the older cars, now have parts that are "obselete" from their manufacturer.

And aftermarket companies don't cater for them.

I have bought many genuine parts, and priced many as well.

There's not much Nissan have discontinued for the r32.

What did the cars perform like out of the box?

R32gtr, around a 13.? quarter mile.

Gto, I believe were high 14 at very best.

Aftermarket parts(if looking to mod) are plentiful for the gtr.

For the gto, a lot more is "custom made" only.

And for 20k, you can buy a very nicely modded 32.....

Heck, for 22, you can buy mine.

I was looking at the gto originally, and I can't say how happy I AM, that i ended up with a gtr instead.

Hope this helps your decision.

Let us know which way you go.

Cheers, Luke.

But you are ignoring the fact that the GTO was completely and utterly sh!t when new and the passage of time has done nothing to help its cause.

as a GTR owner.......... Buying one is one thing.... maintaining is whole different thing... specially with R32, which are now getting a bit old. so if your questioning the purchase price.... ??..

By Bias opinion -

GTO looks better than R32 GTR

GTir can be made to a real weapon with suspension setup and drive terrain upgrade. but it will be 20K by then too ..

For a nice clean example of a R32 GTR 20k does seem like a fair price, in saying that there plenty of them going for the 10 - 15k range too though..

Performance vs. value a R32 GTR is very hard to beat and alot easier to keep legal (or at least give the appearance of it being legal) as you can have a 330awkw+ car with an almost standard looking engine bay ie. no hole cutting to fit a front mount which comes standard from factory, twin low mount turbos well out of sight, factory airbox etc.

by maintaining a 32/33/34? whats so expensive?

I don't understand by expensive. tie rod ends are what? 30$/corner, so are rack ends, and bushes? what? 1k to replace the entire car. engine/gbox oil?

unless tracking the car, why do you need 100$ oils?

and gbox oil, its not like you need to change them every 10k km

so, where's the cost? only 32's break pivot balls too.

I don't own a GTR, but Skyline/GTR parts are still available at reasonable prices (compare it to a euro car of the same vintage). Not bad going for a car over 10 years old :)

Most car manufacturers only manufacture parts up to 10 years old.

Early/mid BMWs etc aren't expensive. Its called the internet not a dealer.

thing is i dont understand what part would you need replacing?

bushes? i just go superpro.

the only issue here is the g-sensor on the 32Rs dying, but, how often does it happen? that could start costing. but, how often does that happen? james, were your g-sensors okay?

because mine had no issues at all.

Buy a $25-30k R32 GTR. It's likely been maintained and all issues resolved.

If you go sub $20k you may end up paying a total of $40k in the first 6months of ownership.

Go under $15k and you will hear "tick" "tick" "tick" because it's a time bomb !

    • Ok interesting i guess ill wait till using a manual gauge before making assumptions.
    • Not in any way a logical conclusion. Also, looking at those logs, I struggle to see how that much oil pressure can go away that fast unless you are sucking air into the pickup. Meanwhile the ECU voltage is chucking a huge wobbly which seems to be tied to the throttle position. 100% throttle results in decreasing voltage. It's a mess.
    • So didn't get around to installing a manual oil pressure gauge and then decided to take the car for a cruisey drive to a cars and coffee and brought the laptop along with to get another log using more gears to see if its an oil pressure issue under acceleration or after. this log has 3 gears of WOT where as previous had 2 and the oil pressure dropped once on the brakes, and the same again happens here which is interesting as it shows it can hold oil pressure while under acceleration but once slowing or just the lower RPM after a pull pressure drops. I will be chucking a manual oil pressure gauge on to confirm but so far this makes me feel it is not an electrical issue. Something else i realised is the pressure sensor also is giving temperature information and the temp stays steady the whole time which makes me feel like the sensor itself is showing a true pressure reading.
    • LOL.... fk...   there goes 25K to make 200kW
    • For sure the later RB26 variants had a different setup (6 cam voltage sender?), but the RB25DE/DET share the same ECU pinout/PCB footprint, and at the ECU plug it ends up being 'throttle sensor in' & 'throttle sensor out' (to A/T TCU) ...you stick a multimeter on these pins and you'll find them directly connected (0 ohms) ; I had an pair of Nissan ECUs on the bench long ago, and I noticed this throttle sensor in/out link, actually linked to an op-amp ...which was unpopulated on the NA board, but present on the T board and I went 'ah-ha!' in some moment of clarity... ...it wouldn't surprise me if they changed strategy here though (in the software and actual monitoring of this signal), because they did with other stuff (A/T signals).. and 0.45v as a trigger point makes sense, as that's what the external TCU units expect at idle ; kudos, thanks for that insight...I suppose it boils down to whether or not Consult can display real time data of that signal's voltage... ...in any event, it presents the same target...ie; rotate TPS unit to achieve 0.45v to suit both ECU&TCU, and where do you goto from there? Just disconnect TPSwitch connector and/or that plus TPSensor connector....or do you go for the throat and disconnect IACV solenoid and see if it still stalls? (probably throws a recoverable fault code and goes for default idle strategy?)...
