What Does A Timing Light Do?

Hey guys

I bought my first Skyline. R33 s1. My neighbour came over who is a mechanic and instantly noticed my crank angle sensor looked to be at 17deg???? That does not make sense to me.

He suggested I get a timing light.

Can you please tell me what a timing light does? Is it something that is always connected to the car like another gauge?

My car has a turbo back zorst, pod, 10lbs boost, Spitfire coils.

Thats why i think most mechanics a dumb grease monkeys, they seem to get their trade cert in a kellogs box and know stuff all about cars! They just assume

Orrrr, the bloke knows that Skyline's normally operate with about 15 degrees base timing, so he just wanted to appear like he knew something? Lol.

Is there a guide or rule of thumb for adjusting the CAS?

Once you have a timing light, then you adjust based on what it tells you...

nup he's wrong thats 17.5 degrees obviously...

but all jokes aside it dont look right to me...Ive never seen one to be set in the right position that is all the way to one side...

if you're not sure a mechanic or someone shouldn't charge much to throw a timing light on it?

have seen one with the cam belt not set up properly where they f'd with everything else trying to make it run?
