everything runs cooler on e85...everything, I got back form a 20 min drive the other day and could put my hand on the heatshield and hold it there it was barely warm..

If you want a stock motor to last, stick to a safe 260-280rwkw on a sensible 16-18psi.

so 300kw @ 17 psi is not safe??

Exactly, if you can keep the combustion temps down and knocking under control your engine should last for a fair while powered up, as long as you don't track/thrash it.

My stock pistons after 7 years running stock, nearly 3 years of e85 abuse and countless (hundreds) of dyno runs, just a quick wipe down and they look good as new.

well going off the tuners advice, once again here, i was told its the heat that kills the motor, the 98pump fuel when you get too high in boost you start going backwards, and the exhaust valves start to burn

Not really the valves... The issue is simply detonation/knock (there are many other things, but lets just keep it simple).

You simply reach a limit where boost & PULP (& E85) don't agree. Pushing further will end up in detonation which will eventually see the rings/bearings shit themselves or similar.

Problem is the fuel variance for one, you get a batch of fuel that is *slightly* out, combined with a tune on the edge = you are f**ked. Most tuners a conservative and this will never be a problem and the motor should last for a while... How long is a while? - how long is a piece of string? :)

So then what it comes down to is motor age, condition, servicing etc. If you haven't owned the car since new, then how do you know how it's been looked after for the 10-15 years prior to you owning it? Fact is, you don't. It as also built on a production line, not two motors are identical as well with clearances, quality of the parts etc. Hence some cars make more power and some make less (in factory form 10yrs down the track).

You need to remember pushing 300rwkw is essentially doubling the factory output. It's just age at the end of the day. A shit tune will obviously hasten the death.

I mean I've seen stock RB26's circuit raced for 2-3 years over 300-340rwkw, eventually they start to breathe as its just a simple case of worn mechanical parts. Or stock RB26's with udner 300rwkw spin bearings driving round on the street... Nothing is indestructable.

The golden rule is this: If you cannot afford the rebuild, then don't chase the power.

It's proven a RB25 will take 200-270rwkw day in, day out for a very long time (look @ PaulR33, making 200-210rwkw for over 100,000kms). Ask more of it, well it's all a gamble really.

On that note spinning tyres will result in needing lots of new tyres which is also an expensive habit. :P

Lets remember also the beauty of the boosted engine is you can turn the boost/power down.

So you run a safe 250 or whatever most of the time and only crank the power right up when you really need to, with setups its as simple as flicking a switch..

That sounds like an interesting prospect, anyone know much about that?

Unfortunately not, apart from hearing of some older guys playing around with the idea and testing it on a turbo 180B datsun in adelaide at some point 6-7 yrs ago at a country airstrip down victor harbour way

i never did find out how it went or there findings, would be interesting

E85 vs wi, with most people its a no brainer if you have access to E85, its just simpler to setup once you have

the fuel size sorted and its easier for the end user, especially if they are as not mechanical minded, however if you like working on cars and tinkering a bit , water injection is a lot more fun to play around with.

    • Fuse taps are perfectly fine to use, especially when you're adding stuff for your own car, and so long as you're being smart about it. IE, don't throw a 30amp circuit, onto a circuit that is only a small circuit. It's best to add a small circuit, to one that is already quite large. Oh, and make sure you're not going to blow the fuses that are further upstream too! I dislike their use in other applications, such as alarms, telematics/tracking devices etc, as it's far too easy for someone to unplug them and render a system useless. Those sorts of devices I go for wiring in quite secretively.
    • Fob is all cleaned up and it’s working well!! The amount of Vegemite looking sh*t that was in there is mind blowing 
    • Given it is temporary, I bought a  cheapy gauge mount (which has become enflattened) which I will screw into the existing phone mount Also a first for me; given this is a temporary install I could not think of any reason not to use one of those "add a fuse" thingies to source the battery and IGN power. I had always figured they were pretty dodgy but having a good look at them I think they are a valid option for sourcing power from an existing source without cutting 
    • Finally for now, a bit more work on the transmission temp gauge. I was wondering how Raceworks do a gauge for $100 that autometer want $500 for. No idea about the accuracy of course, but they have cut a few corners that made things hard.  First one I mentioned above, the sender is physically difficult to fit and doesn't work with their own adapters (the extra fittings I used to get the sender into a hose cost more than the whole gauge, lucky I had stuff in the shed) Second, the temp sender wires are way too short. They are shown as 2.7m on the box and I know my routing was long from navigator headlight to driver's firewall back to centre console, but I had to lengthen them by about 2m total - 2 joins in each wire. Also, same with the supplied power loom, they needed about an extra 1m to get the fuse box where I sourced power. Another join in each wire since one end wasn't supplied terminated. I know they could argue that the wires might be long enough depending on situation, but when you consider parts and particularly labour, it would be a very expensive cheap gauge if you can't do the work yourself. And, only a small issue....but it would have been nice if they remembered to tap a tread onto *both* spacers they supplied for the bracket....I haven't had to use the M4 tap often!
