Hey guys

What do you think of these? Has anyone tried one?

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/480-TURBO-CHARGER-SKYLINE-RB25DET-SUPRA-1JZ-2JZ-7MGTE-/200471368348?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ead06529c

Can someone suggest a good value replacement turbo for an RB25DET?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply guys. Im looking into the Kando turbos

Read the whole thread... You need external gate etc... Don't try skimp and buy a crap turbo or you'll end up spending double the money trying to get it to work, at least there is proof the Kandos are working reliably....

That one is a POS mate, dont go near it.

As discussed, external gate = kando, internal gate = hypergear (if you are price conscious)

you could waste your time with this turbo, set it up as best as humanly possible etc, but i would put my money on it a simple stock turbo highflowed and tuned with a TBE and FMIC (not even injectors or Z32) would beat the pants off it.

Hypergear is probably the best way to go, he can also bundle an ecu with the turbo which is map sensor based, so you wont need an AFM when you go for your retune. Cant argue with that!

i bought a ebay cheapo about a year ago.. $400 .. took out the old one and replaced with the new one my self. it was a direct bolt on. internal gated. Unfortunately this turbo had a bare minimim of 10psi actuator.. BUT luckily had the mines ecu.. had to get a 3inch inlet for the turbo intake $100 bux, and has been running mint ever since,,.. also makes a sweet wine sound when bulding up from 2000 and 3000 rpm.. i run 17psi for runs with electronic boost controller.. ..

just make sure you do the absolutel necessaries eg.. fill the turbo with oil before you stick it in, change to fresh oil, new and flush water coolent, dont boot it when first installed - let it run in for a thousand k's.. i could NOT BE ANY HAPPIER!! the joy of keeping up to a 260rwk xr6turbo with a cheap turbo.. absolutely amazing

how many k's you done on this since installing this turbo and running it @ 17psi on a mines ecu?

also is this Mines ECU setup to work with bigger injectors and a Z32 afm? or is it all on stock RB25 bits?

that is your motor in the very near future.

The amount of people i know directly or indirectly that have ended an RB25 with a mines ecu now is very close to double figures. N that is on a stock turbo!!!! Edited by jjman

ive done about 20K on it since install.. it is supposedly meant to run with bigger injectors without further tune (not that mines ecu can be tuned) .. not sure about the z32 (still running a stock afm) . just have the little bolt ons, eg, big return mount ic , bosch fuel pump, series 6 sparkies, pod, 3 inch exhaust..

I've ran a ebay turbo for 4 years now.. no dramas at all. t04e knock off running 14psi all day everyday.

Times are changing.

times are changing indeed!! why bother getting a power fc, piggy back etccc etcccc,, when you can buy a 150 dollar mines ecu running nearly 18pounds with a few very light mods... approx 220-230 at the rears,, now thats all i want and need im a happy camper!

but yeah obioviously if you want more power,,, next stage is spending big bux on a ecu, then a turbo, then supporting mods, which will cost you another 2k or so ( to get another 50-100 kw rise ) ..

    • Small update for the day... Turns out the intercooler and engine coolant hose kits are anything but complete....I probably should have counted better but it only really covers about half the coolant hoses in the car, it really just covers the visible stuff and pretends everything else doesn't exist (turbo water feed and returns and also heat exchanger lines through the 2 pumps and cooler) .In any case, I'm happier to have half reliable hoses than none, but a bit of a disappointment. Anyway...finger click (and 5 hours).....hoses in place, lots of spring clamps replaced with screw clamps, and engine coolant is on the pressure tester for the night.   Incidentally, upsized header tank is an Inifiniti factory option....not sure I'll ever do prod car racing in this but at least it is legal.
    • Just weld it onto the hot pipe. If you want it right after the turbo, put it right after the turbo. Or rip the comp cover off and drill and tap a hole into it.
    • hahaha glad I can rely on you two to go on a spiral at the drop of a problem! Some quick answers....the ducting is excellent top bottom and sides....everything that gets in goes through the coolers (noting the oil cooler redirects it out again, fair call if it is cooling 120o+) and the heat exchanger for the intercooler also has some scoops to pick up more than it's fair share too. I can't see going down the water spray track....no bueno for formal racing and a big risk for long rally days if you run out (plus I'm not clear if it is allowed there either yet).   Frankly, it must be possible to reliably put 400kw through a standard front end, the BMWs do it so I just need to work it out....I'm starting with reducing blockages in the way and adding some coolant capacity with a bigger header tank, flushing rad and making sure it was filled/bled properly (I didn't do the last coolant change); also taken measurements incase next step is a bigger/higher capacity custom radiator
    • wow, a completely stock GTR! I've got to admit, I have no idea from what you are describing....do you have  any idea where the "thump" comes from, and are you certain it is the HICAS light not something else like the cat overheat light?
    • nice work, welcome to the world of CAD! fabricating accurately in 3 dimensional space is beyond me....I almost always end up making something more than once...sorry I mean I extensively use prototyping
