1996 Skyline gt 4 door ER33. Stock standard but running on LPG

This afternoon the RACV got my car started after giving the fuel tank 5 or 6 solid blows. Apparently the fuel tank pump had seized, for want of a better word.( I doubt the fuel was contaminated , but possible)

Since then the car has started effortlessly.

Is there a replacement fuel tank pump I can get if I don't want to get a new skyline fuel tank pump should the pump be too expensive.( Can I even buy a new fuel tank pump)

What are my options?

Since this has only happened once am I being overly concerned about the fuel pump?

Do they tend to fail intermittently or suddenly?

Can I economically get an external fuel pump and have it fitted?

Cheapest option is a genuine Walbro 255 or a Bosch 044. Walbro is the easier to fit (vs the Bosch) when the pump is supplied with a wiring kit to suit your car. Make sure to get a genuine pump and not a chinese copy. On a note these pumps have issues (physical mounting inside the tank) when fuel gets to 1/4 level. Also they need to be wired into alternator voltage as they don't tend to like the factory 6v/12v switching.

The option that is the least ammount of hassle are the Jap aftermarket pumps (Nismo, Tomei, HKS etc) which drop straight in, require no new wiring, and have no issues on low fuel in the tank.

External fuel pump, no. You need a lift pump physically inside the tank so you would be running 2 pumps minimum, the 2nd pump would be inline "external".

Car died again today so I will get the fuel pump replaced next week.

How is it done . Can the pump be replaced without disconnecting everything . Is there easy access eg from above the back seat or does the tank have to be taken out?

The auto electrician is unclear what to do until I give him the car.

Any recommendations for Brisbane for an auto electrician familar with skylines and fuel tank pumps??

Open boot, take boot carpet out, look for a lid with hoses going to it. Lid comes off and the pump can be taken out and replaced. Red wire goes to positive, black wire goes to ground.. doesn't require an auto electrician to do this.

Back seat nor the tank need to be removed.

Normally when the pump is changed through that lid, the tank doesn't need to be empty but can make things easier. Since you have the only skyline on LPG, I don't see any other way than to either remove the LPG tank to access it (is the tank actually sitting over it?), or remove the fuel tank (will most likely need draining).

Does the fuel gauge in a 1996 skyline GTS show the amount of fuel on the gauge even when the engine is off and the key is out ,

Thats what my gauge shows after having the fuel tank fuel pump replaced. I have been driving around but the gauge doesn't seem to want to drop.I will monitor it for a few more days , but what is a possible cause of this fault, of the gauge always reading full .(assuming I am not mistaken about when I last filled up.)

Is the float part of the new fuel pump or is it a separate item inside the tank.

As I run on LPG I haven't paid much attention to the petrol gauge.

    • Ah yes, but the part in my hand was actually painted and fitted by me! I knew any front lip was likely to be sacrificial but I've had to fix it twice already... by the time I buy a fibreglass fixing kit, sort out sandpaper blocks, buy some fibreglass filler, body bog, spend the time and effort for a 'Greg' result... a new one being $290 seems like it's the better way to go and spray that with bedliner/raptor coat and we're all pretty again.. Would have preferred it last more than a month though. Them's the breaks I suppose.
    • I find it funny that the USA is finding out all this really really weird stuff, and people from the USA are coming here treating it like gospel, yet, all the info on solving those issues is here on these forums for the last 15 odd years... Also, I know how much heat it takes to ignite the hood lining of an R33 skyline. I worked it out myself... It also took a LOT of time, and heat for it to do it... Big single, and I needed to drive the car, so retarded the timing off to "protect it". Yeah, that was a bad move for cruising on a freeway with only 15 degrees of timing on it. That was a lesson I learned around 2009. So that's over 15 odd years ago. Aligning water and oil, that's identical for any turbo engine, it's not Japanese specific. If a shop doesn't know how to make sure the core is rotated the right way, then they shouldn't be touching any turbo engine. That's not a matter of "We haven't had Skylines for that long here"...
    • Sounds like it is rotational in the driveline. CV? Tailshaft CB? Also.....didn't you just pay to have that bit painted and put on the car?
    • Yeah, when I dialled my idle down, given how much time I spent idling at the lights in traffic on my daily commute, the effect on overall fuel consumption was absolutely noticeable.
    • Emissions, fuel consumption, heat, noise, etc. most likely.
