Heyo,

I'm a big fan of asian cars and the whole drifting scene, i'de love to go down to a meet and drive a 180sx around, problem is i can only get my hands on my mums vs and take it down to the carpark of the local safeways/coles when i can.

the question is, can you drift in a stock 96 vs auto, how ideal are they for drifting, and is thier any known issues with them ?

also - are there any drift meets i can rock upto and watch or anything

thanks team!

hay i seen a VS V8 drift, but he had a welded diff, still auto, but god he had trouble!!!! Mate i drift nearly every weekend!! but you can't have ppl tag alone anymore, because you find loop, do 1 lap to make sure its clear, do 10 laps and then get the hell out of there before the cops come running!! to have ppl tagin alone is very hard, and you WILL get treated like a drifter, and if you think your car is R/W, 2 weeks ago, the cops devected a '04 magna, that was 3 weeks out of the showroom! They also said that he had been doin donuts cause the rear tyres were bit down.... So need i say anymore

go to a skidpan before you kill/injure the car/yourself/some poor innocent person you spoon.

when you are young and starting out you need to heed this advice. it'll save your ass.

PS. I grew up driving my parent's VS's exactly the same as you. You and that car are NOWHERE NEAR ready or suitable for drift. This is me in the blue R31 http://www.mercurymotorsport.com.au/events...llery/index.htm

Thats a skidpan.

Go there.

Zeroforje, I've organised a few drift training session on the skidpan before, with cost around $120per head and that includes lesson from an experienced instructor. A great day to learn about drifting. Although your VS auto may be less ideal for a full-on drift competition, on a skidpan there is no reason why you can't do it and have fun like the others. You probably just need to select 2nd instead of drive on your gear selector. Believe it or not, some guys here has autos and they have drifted before. The instructor also told me that they even had FWD cars on the skidpan before. We even had a brand new E55 once fanging it :). Let me know if any of you guys are interested to learn drifiting in a safe environment, I can help organise a group of 6 to do it.

Hey guys,

after reading this thread, hmm... and talking to me older bro, he has stock as shit VT commodore, he wanted to try to drift, i told him what some of u guys said earlier about gear selector on autos... and i'm in passenger seat, he tried to do this on roundabout, it works but the car isn't flat (the VT is Execuvite) meaning, greater risk of body roll.

He was so impressed and i said to him "Take it easy, if u want to try this, try it on track not in public roads where the Victorian Cops are hiding out somewhere."

zer0for0je, If u want try to drift your mom's commodore, at least bring it home in one piece... or buy yourself decent car to drift, and grab current issue of SPEED magazine it has 25 pages of Drift survival guide

Cheers

McJeff

McJeff, what ur bro needs is a stiffer anti sway bars. I believe Whiteline made some aftermarket swaybars that will fit his VT well. If it does improve handling and he wants to go more, then consider getting the full suspension kit. Whiteline uses Koni (for mine, not sure for VT), they're nice and firm but not bone jarring hard.

He was so impressed and i said to him "Take it easy, if u want to try this, try it on track not in public roads where the Victorian Cops are hiding out somewhere."

True, take it to the track. You'll never know if cops is waiting around the bend to pull you over, or a telephone pole in the way waiting for you to wrap yourself into, or maybe an old lady crossing the road on her way home from her groceries... things can get nasty... See Funkeh's thread, he had a try-hard drifter smashed his letter box.

Just bought the issue, haven't read the articles yet but looks good. Nothing wrong with commies or falcons for drifting, even an N/A V6 version can drift ok with the right technique. But getting a car with suitable chassis makes your learning curve easier. The S13 Silvia range is quite popular, now that they're pretty cheap to get and most imported ones from Japan under 15yo rule may have drift spec suspension on it, ready to drift on any track you want....

i got a ED falcon, 6cyl auto slip diff and in the wet around roundabouts i can go for ages, until i get abit of bodyroll, then it's all over, so practise so that you don't get much bodyroll and you might be able to do it. but find a roundabout on a track!

do as i say, not as i do

Hi all, I just joined the skylines australia forum, hey zer0for0je i been power sliding in my olds commo b4 i had me licence, it was good practise, but unless you have the right setup, and learn properly, your bound to do damage either to yourself or someone else.

I'm real keen in anyone giving me info on the D1 comps starting to pop up, i only had the 33GTst a month and want to have a go... i've got tien's and sway bars and roll cage, is there any other essential items... cheers

I thought Magna's were Front Wheel Drive? Unless this is the EVO version ??:(

I think the stupid driver been handbraking every corner, locking up rear tyres... creating a dellusional state in his mind that his magna is a hi-po rwd sports car.......

Hey Matty, D1 competition is only in Japan, so better save lots of money for your airline ticket and shipping your car back to japan to join one. Full Lock www.fulllock.com organise a couple of local drift competition, and HPI/JMS in Adelaide been organising some as well. They call it "Drift Nats" here....

ask neone i go out with, auto's can drift but they need power, i have proven this over and over, as for you i think u need to think about what u asked?? ur mums commodore? dude firstly get ur own car get some experience and then go learn how to drive on a track.

Course u can drift in an auto. Your delusional if you think that you cant.

In a commodore theres no reason why you cant, appart from the diff.

Lock it or get an LSD and practice.

You can skate anything rwd, as long as it has an LSD :)

    • I'm running a Haltech Platinum Pro with the stock map for the RB20DET + tweaks for my build. When I started it this morning, the IAT was at 32F/0C (Outside temp was ~42F) and the AFRs went off the scale for my AEM gauge. I let it run for ~30 seconds then turned it off. I then did a smoke test, by hooking into a vacuum line directly behind the throttle body, and confirmed there was no leaks ( i let the smoke tester run for ~5 minutes / confirmed it was generating smoke before hand ). I then started the car again, after fixing a power steering leak.... and it seemed to be happy for ~30 seconds (was at ~11/12), but then seemingly shot back up to ~18 again. I then let the car run for a few minutes, thinking this was just cold start related, but the AFRs never came back down. I didn't let the car fully warm up, so maybe this makes sense, but I'm not sure what to do? The AFRs, when I last ran it, were normal, but because of personal reasons I haven't been able to break in the car. It was rebuilt last year.
