Would suck if you own a lot of iPhone accessories from Apply with your iPhones

It looks like the new iPhone's dock connector has received a makeover from past versions, cutting the number of pins from 30 to 19.

New photos and videos indicate that the new iPhone will now have a 19-pin port instead of the 30-pin port that Apple devices have traditionally offered since the third generation iPod.

According to Tech Crunch, the new 19-pin port looks similar to Apple's Thunderbolt port seen on MacBooks, but manufacturers have told the web publication that the new iPhone's pin-out will be different from Thunderbolt's.

I lol... Everyone will have to go and buy new shit, or a special adaptor (if they make one, and watch them charge you for it).

Why they won't use Micro/Mini USB like everyone else... Just retarded.

baaaaaaaaaaahahaha. you gotta give it to apple, for all they lack in the performance of their products, they make up for it in the ability to get their sheep customers to buy new shit at the drop of a hat..

speaking of hats, <insert reference to the simpsons where the girls go crazy over the new malibu stacy doll because it comes with a new hat, and how it compares to apple fanbois>

Any accessory you've purchased is now, obsolete. Any of the I-docks, chargers (car, desk), MBP/MBA link cables etc.

It's a smart business decision for Apple and product producer, as all the Apple failthful will spend.

It just sucks to be a consumer given they've changed the port to a totally new design, which is again outside any other standard that the industry already uses.

If HTC, Samsung or otherwise released a phone with some new proprietary connector that was outside the market and rendered all my connectivity... Useless - I'd refuse to buy it.

But the real sheep are Apple consumers that will just spend again. Apple are very much aware of this given the sales of their products which in many cases are re-hashes of what is already on the market will next to no new features :)

I think it's a pretty long bow to draw to call it a cash grab by apple though, think about it for a second, the vast majority of accessories that I see are not genuine apple products but cheap junk that generally are a much lower quality so as far as I can tell most benefit will go to the companies that provide these, is it not possible that the new port is just evolution of an old design that as your link says has been around since one of the original ipods.

iphone is by far the most popular phone on the market right now but to label these people as fanboys/sheep is just too weak of an argument, it's just that it's a good phone thats looks nice and is easy to use.

My mrs has a 4s, my mum has a 4, and my dad has a 4. They are 3 typical people who have Apple stuff that are in no way fans of Apple but happen to have their products. Now all three of them bought car chargers but none of them are from Apple so I don't see a new port design being hugely profitable for Apple as a whole, sure the small percentage of die hards will spend more on genuine but I'm sure that will be a grain of sand in their vast desert of profit.

My mrs took this pic on thursday night it paints a pretty good picture of how popular iphones are, I'm sure most of them are just typical users as well. I use a 7 year old samsung flip phone before you throw me in that basket.

At the end of the day Apple is a business and business is not just about "keeping the consumer happy".

More importantly, and just like most (if not, all) large corporations, it's about keeping the shareholders happy.

After all, they gotta keep their stock prices on the high, don't they?

This port change will also fark it up for those people who've bought big name docking stations. Those Bose ones don't come too cheap.

^ and that's my point. Apple have gone into partnership and licensed a lot of big names/brands/products to companies for accessories (as to release an official Apple product, that is what you must do, pay god) - But those official people like Bose won't care either. They get more sales regardless as well, which in turn goes back to Apple via funds.

I'd be very surprised if Apple couldn't have announced this at least 6 months ago.

Side point - Work have forced a 4S onto me as an on-call phone. So I've gotta use one now by force.

It's half the size of my current HTC, weighs at least 50% more (I'm not kidding either)... Battery life is no better and it won't sync with half my shit cause I can't load iTunes onto my work machines... I can get the ease of use, but for anyone remotely techy, they are just rubbish

Just occurred to me that every car with iPod connectivity will be boned, lol. That is until apple release an adapter. And given the design of some iPod docks, where the iPod sits inside a holder, you won't be able to use it with an adapter.

As for apple not gaining from 3 party products, that may not be entirely true. For starters, there won't be any at the time of launch of the product, secondly, they may get some royalty from other companies making something that uses their patented and copyrighted design.

As got nismatt's comments about the popularity of the iPhone, it isn't necessarily because it is the best phone. As I've said in other threads on this topic, it is more about brand recognition and being like everyone else than buying the best phone. Plenty of people out there think that the iPhone is the only one that has an app market. an example that I've used before is an older guy (a regular customer) came in to work and was talking to the boss. He started telling my boss about some app on his iphone. My boss isn't that tech savy and said something along the lines of "can you do that on a phone" (he has an iphone and hates it). The guy responds "it's a $1000 phone, of course you can", so i piped up with "my $200 Android phone will do that too". The guy looked a bit shocked and deflated.

the other example I like to use is about the branding. The majority of iPhone users i know refer to their iPhone as iPhone in everyday conversation, such as "have you seen my iPhone? I can't remember where i put it" Where as others would simply say "have you seen my phone? I can't remember where i put it".

The only sheep here are the ones that follow the shepard around with the ihate, surprised cowboy hasn't had his two bobs worth yet.

You're beginning to develop a bit of a complex by the looks of it.

I really don't need to say anything. Apples disdain for their idiot client base says it all. But they know they can get away with it because people like you will keep lapping it up.

What does the new connector do that the old one doesn't? Nothing is going to be my bet, apart from fleecing more money fro iSheeple.

You reckon Apple doesn't get a slice of every peripheral made which uses their propriety connector? You're dreaming.

iPhone is the most popular because it's the only one using the idiot proof iOS. Android makers actually give their customers choice by having phones at all different price points and spec levels. Android is the biggest mobile phone OS in the world, accounting for some 60% of the market.

Going by that photo it appears Apple mobile phone choice of homos the world over. Interestingly, i went to an Incubus concert a couple months ago and was pleasantly surprised to see the number of non-iPhones in the crowd. It was also amusing that probably 60% of the iPhones which were being held up that I could see had smashed screen.

That's right! The new port will do nothing different. It's all just to boost sales of new peripherals. It's an ultimate business decision.

They'll introduce this new port for the next few years and then change it again when the time is right.

I've said it before, Apple's marketing and business strategy is ingenious.

You could literally sell a piece of stinky, brown shit and if it's marketed properly, you'll make sales and thus profit.

But as far as phones go, I use an iPhone for its simplicity and smoothness. Mum uses a galaxy s2 and I find it less responsive than my iPhone.

And most importantly, I use a pc at home and the iPhone can access porn just as easy/quick without issue or any tweaking necessary.

Just occurred to me that every car with iPod connectivity will be boned,

Most use bluetooth these days so this isn't right.

My bet is it will be able to sync a faster rather than do nothing, something I bet all iphone users will enjoy.

Care to elaborate on your claim or show some kind of proof that I'm dreamining? Or is it just typical bs from you.

So you are 'alleging' that 60% had cracked screens, wow must have been a thrilling concert if you had time to count, lol. Again I'm sure this is just more cowboy bs.

Actually, now that you mention it, the new port may allow for USB3.0 capabilities.

    • Update: Tunehouse looked into the problem and identified a wiring issue between the camera unit and the connector. They managed to get it working , but did warn me at some point it will stop working again. From their perspective it is unserviceable and will need replacement. They did some research and found that the new replacement camera would be Approx $1400 supply only (their fitting cost would be $190) . They did provide the part number (28442-JL05B) and a quick google of the part number shows that these are rather expensive brand new (seemingly no longer in manufacture) for the places that still have them in stock, with the used option potentially presenting  the same issue down the track at some unknown point. They are happy for me to supply the part so that they can fit it. Decisions, decisions... I can definitely recommend Tunehouse (thankyou Vee37!). Cost for the diagnosis was as quoted  ($190) , car was ready on time and communication was top notch. Their workshop is super clean and modern, and there was plenty of car candy parked out the front on the day I went.   Would definitely go back.
    • to fix the voltage drop issue I swapped out the old 150amp alternator which turns out is a brand known for having issues and replaced it with the black 180amp alternator beside it
    • For anyone interested, the Way Back Machine has that Japanese website archived with pictures, etc: https://web.archive.org/web/20051023225805fw_/http://www.a31cefiro.com/air_con.htm "Simply swapping the wiring of the harness will not allow it to function properly. For the outdoor air sensor and sunlight sensor, disconnect the wiring connected to CN1-11 of the air conditioning harness from the harness and connect the sensor side wiring to earth. For the indoor air sensor, disconnect the wiring connected to CN2-3 of the air conditioning harness from the harness and connect the sensor side wiring to earth. The connector PIN numbers listed here are the genuine A31 PIN numbers. To avoid incorrect wiring, check with a tester before wiring. Also, disconnect the wiring in a location close to the sensor. The disconnected harness side wiring will not be used, so be sure to insulate it." Wish someone sold a conversion harness to just plug-and-play a Kouki 180sx digital climate control into C33/A31. I'm decent with wiring but feeling kinda lazy about taking this on. Edit: Did some more digging and found a helpful Minkara blog post about the conversion as well: https://minkara.carview.co.jp/userid/1831116/car/1360568/2284209/note.aspx "After installation is complete or the battery is replaced, you need to go into self-diagnosis mode and set the internal air recirculation. The way to do it is to "hold OFF with the key on for more than 5 seconds, set the number to 5, then press 卍→C." ↑↑↑It probably won't make sense unless you actually try it (・∀・)." Lol wtf
