In USA I can kind of understand.. the Skyline has been a 'desirable' car which was unavailable as LHD (at least in GT-R form), in the R series. So it could be seen as 'cool' . In Aust.. no-one knows of infiniti, so it would just be a personal taste thing, and not really a 'cool' thing.

Never can understand the Holdens with the Chev badges.. like anyone would want people to think they have an american car...??

I would like to rebadge mine to Infiniti purely because i feel the v series skylines dont get recognised as a "real skyline" in the australian nissan community anyway. So might as well except the difference and call it something else.. Infiniti will do.

As for holdens.. maybe if Barina drivers want to be REALLY cool, they could rebadge to Daewoo??! aaaahahhahahhahaaa... :woot:

Main point of difference here is Infiniti is a luxury brand. Chev is broke.

^^ agreed.. after all, what makes it not a 'real' skyline? it doesn't have an RB, but neither did the pre R series skylines. No turbo.. but a stock 350GT produces more power/torque than any stock non GT-R R series (although the R34 25GTT comes close depending on who's specs you read). Sure, we can't import the AWD version, but they do exist..

All I can think is the styling makes them less agressive looking.. but the early prince skylines weren't exactly 'agressive' looking, and no-one dares question their authenticity..

Lack of 'hot plates' at the back is a common thing. It doesn't have the circular tail lights blah blah blha!

Might be cause the share the same platform as the 350z and 370z.. In my opinion they should have just called the v35 and v36 "350gt" and "370gt" full stop. No skyline required.

Its like they were trying to kill 2 birds with one stone. They created this new infiniti model for the American market but then slap a skyline badge on it to keep the skyline mob happy due to the 10 year gap between the r34 and the r35.. Now they have created this "us and them" scenario..

I did hear at one stage that it was a Carlos Ghosn idea, the Nissan designers weren't going to give it the Skyline label originally. Maybe that is what has upset the R series guys?

However, i can understand why people would get upset with a Skyline Crossover..

I reckon that the Skyline Crossover does have its merits. "I'm a hoon because I drive a skyline. But I'm a family man because it's a crossover..." LOL!

Che? I think I read that wrong because it sounds like you are saying that the V35 and V36 were designed as an Infinity for the Yanks and then the Japanese just made it RHD and put "Nissan Skyline" on it for their market?

If that is what you actually think and I didn't read that incorrectly, can you please explain the 2001/2002 V35 Skyline?

Pretty sure the G35 started in the US in 2003, yes?

I dont understand your question.... If your referring to the 10 year gap i mentioned.. I not sure if its exactly 10 years but i know there was a long period between the r34 and r35.

what im trying to say is rather then continuing on with the R series skyline, it APPEARS that it was more convinent to use the V series as a replacment for the R series until the R35 was finally released.. So in other words, they had 3 gaps to fill in the early 2000's, 1) infiniti coupe for US market. 2) skyline for japan 3) 350z market world wide. Rather then creating 3 individual platforms, they shared the same one to cut costs. Get what i mean? FYI -- dont take any of this literally.. Its just my observation without reaserching any of it. (im at work atm)

If anyone has the facts id love to know for sure what the story is..

^^^^^

I think that they probably just wanted to go a different direction and build something that could complete with the Euro's. Probably a different group of designers, different financial goals at the time etc etc. I don't think that the V series are really a spiritual successor to the R series but Nissan made their choice and have to stick with it I guess. Bit if a shame really because the R35 IS the spiritual successor but doesn't wear the Skyline badge.

As for why they call it Skyline in Japan and Infiniti everywhere else, I can only imagine that the Japanese are happy to drive a luxury coupe with Nissan badges and don't get hung up on the brand name. The rest of the world may look at a luxury coupe with a Nissan badge and think "that's just a spec'd up Maxima!'. It worked for Toyota so I guess that Nissan just ran with their idea.......

Just remember that 99% of the worlds car buyers don't know a thing about cars and simply buy based on brand, advertising and price.

i wouldnt be surprised.

Carlos Ghosn would have been one of the main reasons that things panned out the way they did.. But i dont think thats a bad thing.

Nissan wouldnt be were they are today without him. (not just from sports car sense. They are doing pretty well in general and heading in a good direction imo)

If the worst thing we can do is complain about what they called each model then they did pretty damn good.. why??? because.

The V35 is awesome. The V36 is awesome. The R35 is f***ing brilliant. The Z cars are awesome.

Its a far cry from what Toyota brought to the table in 10 years. Not saying the 86 is a bad car.. Just that its far overdue.

Are the Infiniti G35's and Nissan V35's made from the same factory with just different logo's slapped onto them?

Also with the release of the Infiniti G37 coupe coming out in december here, i'm wondering if their made from the same Nissan factory as the V36's.

^^ pretty much.. yes. obviously with minor differences to suit the country they are going to.. eg. Navi, and other local design rules.

Is the Australian G37 going to be a V36? seems a bit strange, since they are supposed to be releasing the V37 next year.. you would think they would just wait and release it here too.. I thought that was why they are delaying the release of the G37 here?

I think he was just trying to say the V35 skyline was made first, for the JDM market, then they decided to release it in USA as an infiniti G35 about 2 years later.

I think the V series are are reasonable replacement for the non GT-R skylines and don't deserve the flack the R owners give it.. however, Nissan was faced with an issue with they released the R35.. it was far too different to the V series to give it a skyline name.. but really is a suitable successor for the older GT-R skylines.

No, V37 will be the successor to the V36 in the same way that the V36 was the successor to the V35.

All the American's that i talk to on the V35 Coupe Driver's FB page know that their G35's are Skylines, they just call them "G'S" and G35's because that's what they are made as in their country. Surely you guys understand that.

In regards to rebadging your V35 as an Infiniti purely because you THINK that people don't recognise you as a Skyline driver, that is the silliest things i've heard.. stand for what the car is manufactured as who gives a f*ck if people don't think you're a "real skyline driver"
