G'day

I've recently been given what I've been told is a manual transmisson out of a rb20

I'm just wondering how can you tell the difference between the turbo and non turbo box? Or if there is a difference between them?

I've looked everywhere on the net and can't seem to find any information on it.

Thanks in advanced, sorry if this has already been covered in this forum.

And RB25DE box is also the same.

But the ratios are not all the same. When I put RB25DE box into my R32, it was noticeably different gearing in 2nd and 5th. I'm pretty sure that the RB20DE ratios are the lowest of the lot.

Ah too easy!

Cheers for the help, been searching all morning and couldn't find nothing lol.

Actually, what kind of power can they handle?

My gearbox I got now behind my rb30 has crapped itself and I got this box just as a quick fix for the time being, I've got about 230 rwkw, how long do you reckon it will survive for before im back To square one?

Cheers again for the replies

Unless it's out of an R33 in which case it will have an electric speed sender

No. R33 RB25DE box is the same same as the R32 box (in the speedo hole). The electric sender in the NA box is not the same as the electric sender in the turbo box. No need for Navara hybrid drives. Just pull out original and stick in R32 cable. As far as I can remember, anyway. Was 7 or 8 years ago.

Oh you meant that. I thought you were joking lol.

I've never swapped the N/A 32 vs 33 senders, only turbo/navara mod ones. (I am fully aware the senders turbo vs n/a are different though)

I did it when I killed my RB20 box and couldn't get one at a sensible price.....yet no-one wanted the R33 NA ones....even though they were the same. The R33 one I got was almost completely brand new. Was a good deal.

they can handle a fair bit of power, its the torque that kills them, because your putting whats ment to be for a 2000cc engine onto the back of a 3000cc engine

it wont last very long especially if you have a HD clutch, that bitch will die fast as f**k if you like to put your foot down alot and if you take off in the wrong gear you gonna snap all that shit up in there lol

your best bet is to spend that extra cash, get yourself an RB25DET box and tailshaft, get the tailshafts glued together by a workshop, and V-WALLA!! a box that will handle the

shit you put it through

Thanks mungy for the feedback.

I recently found out a couple bearings in the box I'm gonna use have collapsed, drained the old oil out of it and a fair few hunks and chunks came out with it, instead of playing around with that might look into adding some cash and picking up a stronger box, seeing as I'm gonna through more cash into some more horses, I'll end up at square one lol?

trust me i ran a RB20 box in my RB30ET and killed it first week i had it, bought a second hand one to get me around while i saved for a 25 box and blew that the next week

borrowed some cash for a 25 box and shaft, had no troubles with it to the day i sold it

    • Out here E90s are the cheapest way into a sporty-ish car because everyone knows just how expensive the repairs can get. 8-10k USD for an automatic 335i.
    • Noted. Have noticed BMW are more 'high maintenance' for sure. They've attracted my attention as I think the used car prices seem reasonable vs other options, and the extra quality overall vs a commodore / camry / corolla or similar of the same vintage is appealing, especially the interior, and they are more on the sporty side whereas the others mentioned can be more cruising or economical A-to-B only.
    • Haha yeah I know, this is SAU after all, why are we talking about BMW's of all things!? I hear you on the 'don't have to worry about it' side of things. Having been fortunate enough to be have been able to buy a brand new motorbike or two...never really enjoyed them as much as I'd have liked as you worry so much about where you park it, will it get scratched, stolen, attempted theft, knocked over, etc...and yes dirty. Older less valuable bikes you can just go where you want and park it wherever and not really worry that much in comparison. And who cares if it gets dirty! Never owned a V8, and have had my eyes on VE / VF commodores for years but with their prices climbing so high, the M3 has come into focus more as prices are much closer than I've ever seen...is it a potential contender now?...of course need to factor in the S65 'maintenance' especially and like you said general M car 'tax'. One can dream anyway. But more on the reality front - did read the whole 330i thread as well and was a great read too, both threads enlightening as I've never even driven one of these cars! I do recall 330i didn't seem to have the same amount of issues for almost the same car (turbos and related differences notwithstanding)...perhaps down to getting it earlier in it's life so looked after better than the 335i? Perhaps so as your 130i has been good and quite similar, so finding a car that's been looked after well is the especially-crucial-BMW-first-step.
    • Nice. Dont worry about the time of not running. My current skyline hasn't run since I bought it. About 8 years ago.
    • It's also worth noting that I am heavily and unconditionally biased. I've had a lot of cars including some GTRs a fair while ago. I love my BMW's now a lot. They make no sense a lot of the time and the guys on here remind me regularly that I could get something else that does what I want better and cheaper. If you're going to take on an older BMW it's definitely a commitment. If you bail on it early you'll lose money and also the ability for it to put a smile on your face. Stick with it and it just gets better.  f**k I should get into advertising.
