Ok, so we all know that it is always better to buy a car with a full service history and logbooks to authenticate the kms (along with a mechanical and visual inspection of the car), but how much of a difference does it make to the resale value of a relatively rare car such an R34 GTR v spec II? I’m seeing more and more of them around these days with no logbooks or paperwork that are surprisingly (somewhat) clean, and I’m also seeing some around which look old and worn but with logbooks, that have obviously had the k's wound way back. So how much of a difference do you think it makes? Would you buy a car that had a mechanics ok and looked clean to you if it didn’t have any paperwork?? Also, would you go for a good but aged car with a full genuine service history and all accompanying paperwork (lets say it had done ~100,000 kms), or one which looked and felt quite a bit newer with nothing to substantiate the k's (lets say this one's apparently done only 55,000 kms)?

End of the day all you can really do, is get a very thorough inspection by someone that specialises in GTR's.

Sort out the good from the not so good. The 2002's are over 10 years old now...

But I'd rather choose a car in great condition with no log books, then a tired looking one with log books and odo wound back.

Forgot to mention, with the odo wound back, I'd go the clean one since the books sound like they were off eBay.

Forrest Gump's mother said, "You just do the best you can with what you've got..."

This means that regardless of whether you Michael are the car's 2nd or 3rd owner since new; if you create a portfolio of all work done on your VS2 & a new log book, the time line starts now!

Any prospective buyer will see if you are an enthusiast or not. Your records will be backed up by the condition of your vehicle. And by doing this, you will be doing a wonderful job to minimise depreciation.

Furthermore, that prospective buyer will go to the next step of protecting his interests by asking you for a compression test, a hoist inspection, a discussion with your service technician and your tuner. If I were you, I would have no hesitation to welcome this level of scrutiny.

The value of your nice VS2 can be protected! :)

Regards.

Edit*

Im just noticing that you're the buyer eh?

Well reverse the roles above > bargain damn hard. If there's any doubt though, walk away!!!!!!!!

    • Can't see that being a thing.
    • My fob has never worked, I once attempted to follow the procedure to re-key it, (I have other fobs for the car alarm thing in there). I actually have three of them. Do aftermarket alarms take over the pairing mechanism for central locking? Or do they piggyback off it? I suppose it depends on the system, right? I have four sets of keys/keyfobs. One definitely works, one I think works, one definitely doesn't work, and I have the OEM one that has never worked :p. Is this fixable/workable/whatever? I mean I know it's beyond "just clean it" but how *do* they get synced up?
    • It's actually a really weird comparison... the MX5 is on another level and I kinda question this comparison at all. It'd be closer to compare it to a GTI/Golf/Hatch anything that kicks around. NC MX5 with a turbo has the right to go up with and beat the FD RX7 or 180SX or any other JDM hero car. That's the comparison that would really ruffle feathers.
    • @MBS206 you need more shed in your life... What sort of car is your mates race car?  Hopefully he returns the favour when you're ready to get cracking on yours! None of my mates are into cars so I don't have to worry about that as a distraction thankfully.  I have enough other distractions so I don't need that one too!  Between working 6 days a week (5 1/2 really so 55 hours or so per week), both kids have basketball almost every week night (including Friday night in Melbourne - 2 hours away), my daughter plays netball as well, my sons footy has started now and I coach his under 14's side as well as I'm on the Footy club committee this year, I ride motorbikes every spare Sunday I can find, plus trying to be some sort of a husband.  Life is a busy little exercise at the moment!  I wish there were 8 or 9 days in a week sometimes!
    • Ha ha, that is very true!  I'm too scared to leave it in the position though, it tingles my balls seeing it like that!
