the things on the front of the engine with the blue plugs (assuming you have a VQ25 or 30 motor) are just electronic magnets. they unbolt easy enough, the mating surfaces of the magnets can be inspected but not much else. The gasket is metal so can be re-used. the sound issue is most likely something to do with the camshafts rather than the magnet unit

There is not much to the camshaft advance mechanism, just an electromagnet with a clutch plate and behind that a spring advance unit. I have spares here if you need them.

Have you already gone through that process. I mean have you had the same issue and changed the things? I got a call from a wrecker here in Melbourne and he asks for $270 for the pair. I'm not sure what to do.

One last question.

As the mechanic diagnosed the problem as the variable valve timing control system....... sort of thing which is causing the noise, what is the repair procedure or what kind of parts needed for the job? what exactly is it that I would need to replace?

I send an e-mail to an auto wrecker who has three v35s in stock and he gave me $275 for pair, I dont know what he is talking about and I dont wanna get things that I would not need

ok- question. Does he know that the unit is not working? Has your mechanic checked and logged the Cam advance degrees while driving the car?

Without first hearing the noise I couldn't be sure but I doubt it is the cam advance mechanism, they are nearly bullet proof. They do make a decent click noise though as the engine revs past about 2500 revs. below that they shouldn't be working at all. Did he check the cam signal like Alex mentioned? If the solenoid is getting energised then the mechanism is working as it should and the problem is possibly with the ecu or wiring.

    • No. Go a different colour, and just trim it at an edge line. Even manufacturers do different panels different colours etc.
    • I see no real downsides to ITB's, apart from the initial cost of my drive in drive out lifestyle, the "upsides" is they sound cool and would add lots of smiles I am willing to pay to play for the extra smiles I've spent the morning googling and youtubing the BBR ITB's, a "little" extra power and throttle response, but alot more dort, and really, I'm only really in it for the dort Who knows, after all this money is spent I might even make 150kwatw....LOL
