denham, can't you just not drive like a hoon :) and perhaps move to another part of melbourne where you don't get reamed for having an import ie MILES AWAY FROM THE SOUTH EASTERN SUBURBS :)

i drive it only once a week to work these days and thats in peak hour traffic on the monash freeway (the carpark)

Denham, Do it. Do it (starsky & hutch voice)

My mate has a 2002 M3 SMG II it is the business.

When I was looking at the R32 I considered E36 M3, but if you do go for one, go the 3.2 (I know it has been said before). The E36 M3 3.2 is not much changed to the E46. I used to own a hella modified E30 323i, I can put you on to some BM experts if you need mate

Stuff the M3, just go the Mini Cooper S :D

Thought about a Merc? E55 AMG's certainly get up and boogie and no cop is goin within a country mile of it... I dunno how much they're goin for tho.

hmm e55 amg is way over my budget.

ronin

what are the 0-100 and 1/4 times for the e36 M3?

BMW badging can be followed literally to a certain extent.

320i - 2 ltr

325i - 2.5ltr .... etc.

328 is 2.8 and 147kw's BUT there was an update of that engine 97 or 98?? (Maybe earlier)I'm not sure. Power stayed the same, but torque was increased noticably. So if you're looking for Coupe/Convertible 328i's, try and find the update model.

Only the 330i's, 530i's, etc have the 3ltr engines, 170kw's.

It seems here that quite a lot of ppl know other ppl with E46 M3's (myself included) and we know these cars are rock solid, and popularity in endurance races show this as well. M Roadster, M Coupe, M3. I noticed that factory recall was for a 3 month span of engine production. Considering the car has been produced since beginning of 2001, 3 or 41 months and counting is hardly bad considering the level of technology in the engine.

I know the Bathurst cars are far from factory, (altho the E46 M3 was running stock exhaust, and maybe 2 other mods, ie chip/re-map, intake. Pretty much stock as a rock) but that's why i said the 323i

"that's a car with 127kw's out of the factory. Bout 1350kg as well.

Our family has had 320i, 528i, and now 530i looking towards an E46 M3 a little later - Not ONE mechanical problem at all! 10+ years of BMW's, 3 diff models, QLD trips, ski trips, etc not one engine problem. All the Straight Six family. Only problem was with the rear left electric window switch on the 528i :D

Trust me, you won't be disappointed with an E46 328i, or E36 M3.

cheers

denham dont for one reason that car has really high milage you dont want to know what bmw's are like if you have to work on them if it was a merc I say fine but not a bmw.

check the car for smoke even a whisper is not good

"been there done that"

you would be better off with a low klms coupe for simialar money if they can be had dont know bmw prices now though

brand new c180 compressor aroudn 56000 from the dealer in brighton he has it on the front of his shop so allow 60 but still its a brand new merc.

I found a 96/97 c200 for 20ish not long ago

Seriously once you have owned a merc you wont even look at bmws.

teh build quality is heaps better and the reliability is great

    • All this talk about fuel and fancy ECUs, meanwhile my poor old R32 has neither.... When the ignition is turned on, should there be power running o the fuel pump constantly or just for the few seconds it usually takes to prime the pump? About to go have another look at it, have watched some YouTube vids on how to use a  multimeter and looked at some wiring diagrams but really have NFI what I'm looking for because electricity is invisible
    • Yuh....but weren't all the supertourers, except maybe the Audis, FWD? I don't recall any of the others being AWD.
    • They ran them in Oz Super Tourers too https://www.supertouringregister.com/register/vehicle/212/ (I'm so old I remember racing with Matthew Fox) They ran them in Oz Super Tourers too https://www.supertouringregister.com/register/vehicle/212/ (I'm so old I remember racing with Matthew Fox)

    • Yeah, hard to find and a pain in the ass to change with the transverse engine. I’ve worked on a GTiR before and it’s not a job I’d ever want to do again. theres a company in South Africa that makes RS3 gearbox adaptors for the AWD SR20 including gearbox mounts, so I could modernise it and go a dual clutch with paddles. For now tho, it ticks all the boxes. Super cheap, can throw the kids and their junk in the back, and SR20 that I can turbo cheaply, a CVT that’s not a dog’s breakfast like the V35, and has 80% interchangeable parts with stuff I can source from the wreckers cheaply…. But it’s still unique. I love the wagon back of the Autech version. It’s cheap enough that I can buy another stock manual FWD Primera with SR20VE, swap the gearbox to the N15 pulsar short gear ratio box, swap out the brakes to the R32 ones I pulled off my 32, register it on club plates and take it racing. $1300 shipping from NZ. Heaps of parts and aftermarket builders for transverse SR20’s in NZ.
