Had a misfiring problem - took it to local mechanic who replaced one coil pack and the car was running well for 1 day then misfire returned. I used one of the diy tutorials to replace all coil packs. car ran fine for approx 40kms then started misfiring again - nowhere near as bad as they were misfiring before I changed all the coil packs but misfiring nonetheless. What could be causing this?? Anybody?

No, did not change plugs - they were all replaced about 7 months ago....(am checking them all today, though)

I went a bit cheap on the coil packs - FUJI Ultra sparks (sold by osaka.co.nz) ($345 for all six)

as above, weak coils prob fouled old plugs, just change them, haven't heard of those coils, maybe they're getting weak already, go for .8 plugs

(this isn't forced induction performance related haha)

Plugs are most likely covered in shit from driving around with f**ked coilpacks. Change them.

If your mechanic changed one coilpack, I would never go back there again. Unless you told him to quick-fix it and change one.

Its like buying one new tyre, or replacing one big end bearing, or one brake pad. Just stupid.

    • I remember a Wheels mag article from, I dunno when....late 80s, early 90s, or something, about a BMW engine which was claimed to be able to produce cleaner tailpipe emissions than the air it was typically breathing in on Autobahns, city streets, etc etc, in a lot of the really filthy (at the time) Euro and US cities.. All courtesy of the engine management and the plentitude of cats they had on it, of course. Classic marketing spin, naturally, because you sure as shit can't breathe what's coming out the back. But whatever.
    • The interesting part of tests like IM240 is they measure the exhaust output. But they never measure the gases going into the engine... Imagine doing the test in a densely populated city with higher CO2 levels around... Instant disadvantage...

Plus the cars/batteries on chargers are inside a locked garage, inside that fully fenced and locked yard. If you can get the car out, you can have it, as I'll be having one hell of a laugh at your expense.
