hey guys,

i have hid's installed and today as i was coming home i realised the light on the drivers side turned purple. so when i came home i had a look, and i realised when i first turn on the lights its white for a few seconds, but as it heats up it turns purple. the ballast also makes a weird buzzing noise. does this mean its the bulb or the ballast??

well i didnt install the hid myself. a while ago i needed new headlights, and found ones with the hid kit already installed. all i know is that the ballast is a hyper ray. the bulbs are meant to be white, they always have been and even now the left side is still white.

Na its just the power running through them when they are turned on. You will always hear it when the car is off. Ive got a set in my ute, skyline and bike. They all do the same thing. Maybe you should try just buying new bulbs if its all of a sudden changing. Bulbs are cheap anyway

No they buzz when they start up and sometimes a little when they are running. Pull the bulb out it should say on it how many Kelvin it is rated to. as said anything about 5-6000k will have blue or purple tinge. I saw a WRX with 10,000K bulbs which were extremely purple and dull, looked like an idiot really but he thought he was cool....

Do you have projectors headlights? On reflector headlamps they are very glary and you won't get a good spread. You're better off getting halogen 'blue power' or similar (I got Narva Arctic Plus 50 for the gf's Pulsar, lights are a lot better).

Also the buzzing is because you have a cheap kit. Hell even a Kaixen kit isn't that great (4300K my arse, more like 3800K, takes two minutes to warm up) but doesn't buzz.

If you have projectors, look at getting a $200 kit. TRS kit (from USA) have really short bulbs (good, better spread), but I've had issues with their bulbs not being white enough (their 4300K, they don't have 5000K unfortunately). Warm up time is decent (30s) and their kits are good quality.

Cheap $50 ebay kit won't last long. I've had two sets of ballasts and one bulb die all within 6 months.

Best kit I got was 4 years ago, $200 kit which someone from R31SC sourced, that kit lasted up until my dad blew all fuses and relays in my R31 (3 years of use).

    • All I can say Duncan is good luck and I hope that Neil did not run any E85 in Cheryl. I have recently experienced the full spectrum of fuel tank issues in my R33's that had been caused by E85 and contaminated fuel. When you take the cover off the top of the tank and have a look inside you will get an understanding of how easy it will be. Best case situation is clean fuel with minimal contamination. My GTR was like this and it was a very simple operation to just grab the fuel pump carrier bracket and slide it up and out of the tank. My three GTS_T's had different levels of fuel contamination that was probably caused by E85 in the fuel.  In the worst case all of the metal components in the tank had rusted to the point where there were pieces of rusted metal swirling around in the tank. This required the removal of the exhaust, the tailshaft, the complete rear cradle and the fuel tank. The components in the tank were that rusted that it took days to get the fuel pump carrier and the mounting brackets out of the tank. When the tank was finally cleaned, everything inside the tank had to be replaced. With the tank all back together I could then reinstall it in the car along with everything else that had to come out. Good luck and I hope that you find a clean tank.
    • It is a two door. It is black and also still has the OEM wheels and stereo. Exact model would be KR_R32RGFEL_SS According to GTR-Registry.com is a 2 Door Coupe; RB20DE; 2WD no HICAS; MT.F5; (11L) Projector Headlamps and Fog Lights; (12_) Electronic Active Full Auto Air Con (Climate Control); (13-14SS) V Selection -- Which seems to be accurate description of my variant. Will try to upload a few pictures soon. The OEM wheels look like the below image. Image is taken from the goo-net-exchange website.

    • Welcome Gabriel. At least your car has a glorious RB and not the shitty CA18. As MBS206 mentioned all the good bits can be added later. Two doors or four?
    • And half of them have been converted to turbos.
