Just did the survey, it's bullshit on the amount of 'policing' and 'speed cameras' questions...

Just need to hope everyone disagree on both these and we'll be fine.

Also a user on here, good mate, had a cyclist go through the back windscreen of his car a few months back because he wasn’t paying attention and doing about 40-50km/h at the time.

Damage to the bodywork all over the rear, it was an expensive Merc so it was a costly fix

It went through Insurance etc so no drama there… BUT… The cyclist had no insurance at all. So it went through courts or whatever and is paying $25 per week to cover the damages, which is a joke. It’ll take 30 years to pay off.

This is the kinda stuff that is bullsh*t and needs to be regulated. If bike riders are going to share the road – they must also share the costs and have insurance in the event such a situation occurs. Obviously rego shouldn’t be $696. Maybe $100 or something and Govt to make sure insurance is cheap ($50).

But yeah, just one of my many gripes :D

I'll throw my bit in as a cyclist - who gives a shit for traffic laws, lol. After 35+ plus years of cycling on roads, I'm not interested in being in the right and dead, in interested in being alive at the end of the ride, I'll be thoughtful/courteous to other road users but not if it puts me in danger.

If you want me to bore you silly, ask me about it at the next meet

Done!

Was thrilled to see in Q14 about heavy vehicles and tailgating. Had such a situation today. Long story short, nearly got cleaned up by a B-double on Ring Road n/bound by some a$$hole who wanted to go faster (couldn't because of traffic) so he pulled left, passed me, and tried to thread the rig through a gap that wasn't big enough for a semi, let alone a B (he was courteous enough to use the indicators, though!). Wasn't until the trailer bogie cleared me that I realised there was another trailer coming past, and those concrete barriers are a really nice shade of grey!

BTW, all those statistics they are on about, we need to remember:

"There are lies, there are damn lies, and there are statistics"

Here's a text book "Let's combine two questions so that one means the other automatically gets the votes":

Repeat hoon / drink drivers should face longer bans from driving or owning a car.

So automatically when you answer this question, hoon drivers and drink drivers are THE SAME!

Hooning and drink driving in my humble opinion are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

The current labeling of hooning by the general public/police is along the lines of "the driver of the automobile lost traction at the lights in a deliberate manner".

Which to anyone who has half a brain can be interpreted as:

The poor guy got stuck on some oil when it was raining and decided that removing his foot from the accelerator quickly would be a safety hazard to himself and others and made the decision to slowly release his accelerator pedal which continued the loss of traction, but in a controlled manner.

FFS. The 'Hooning' label is ridiculous. Being a deliberate idiot or drink driving yes possibly, but "Hooning". Honestly WTF!?

And why did these sphincters of the universe put the two together?

I fken hate the a$$holes that do that.

</begin> Rant

I don't mind push bikes doing it, as long as they stay to the left so you can pass them reasonably easily.

I mind more if motor bikes pull in front of me when i'm in the 1600/stag instead of some idiot in a camry. I tried long and hard to get that good position at the lights and I intend to use it to get away from the other mindless texting/phone calling/nose picking/short sighted/accelerator pedal reach challenged/accident causing/great big stinky poo poo heads. The best position is away from everyone else and I intend to use it!

If you are going to be a motorbike and go in front of me, then you better bloody move it when the lights turn green and not sit there waiting for your slow to react brain to send that message to your right hand to twitch that throttle open. Pay attention!

</end> Rant.

+1

Nay.

+ Eleventy Bazillion.

And Ash it's not a direct go at people who actually despise cyclists, because at least THEY SEE THEM to despise them. I'd rather be seen and cursed at, than not seen squashed and then cursed at.

:D

Good pickup, there's no way to answer that question without appearing sympathetic to drunk drivers or saying that someone getting a little wheel spin off the lights is as evil as driving over .05

Very poor survey design or just ill-intended from the get go.

Done!

I think the schooling for new drivers here is ridiculous. I mean being taught by a parent / friend for all those hours? Bad habits get transferred, and lets face it not everyone was made to teach. I was lucky enough to learn overseas, where you have to attend classes, get taught by proper instructors, learn on a circuit first, spend months on the open road, and progress through a pretty tough marking criteria.

Sure at the time it was such an effort making time to attend the driving classes a few times a week, but ultimately it made me a better driver.

My gf just got her licence here in VIC (passed first time) and it amazes me how much of a bad driver she actually is. Sure she is new, so would be a little nervous, but you can tell that certain things wasn't enforced in the teaching because a parent just said to 'go at 59km/h and you'll be alright'

She is getting better and I do help her whenever I am in the car, but I always can't help but think if she got my training, she would be much better in the long run.

I am not saying I am pro driver or anything, but I have been on the road in both pretty quick cars and motorcycles and I have never had an accident yet.

Probably just cursed myself there now....

That all depends on your point of view. While on the face of it the survey should be unbiased in the way it is written. This is not how bureaucrats operated. There will be an expected outcome from a number of the questions within the survey to support/quantify current spending and actions.

Basically, you are damned if you do and damned if you don't.

  • 2 weeks later...

The a lot of those statistics are based around rubbish and bullshit as well once you look into them a bit further. Often they will use 1 incident and turn it into 3 separate stats so it's one offence, but 3 times to bloat them...

But of course that's how it's done by Gov't people :)

That's a very good point Ash. Statistics scare and influence people (supposedly) though the people most often targeted are those who fail to see the flaws in how those statistics were obtained, and how they ONLY apply to situations identical to the ones in which they were tested. This isn't made clear by the TAC and Vic police for obvious reasons. I work in the pharmaceutical industry and I see this happen every day with BS advertising and your average person not being able to grasp or comprehend scientific data and consequently the advertising which skews this information to it's advantage... Weird i missed a few posts to this thread! Looks like you got outta the wrong bed on that Fri Nik

Love a good rant!

Fill it out people, the Gov't are pushing it hard - so fill it out and get everyoen you know to do it as well to actually help the results be beneficial rather than filled with minority muppetry.

    • I think the concept is highlighting the various scenarios where thicker oil helps, and thicker oil potentially doesn't help and only generates heat and costs power, in turn for safety which isn't actually any safer (unless you're going real hot). If anything this does highlight why throwing Castrol 10w-60 for your track days is always a solid, safe bet.
    • Jason should have shown a real viscosity vs temp chart. All the grades have very little viscosity difference at full operating temperature.
    • Oops... I meant to include the connector  view... BR/W - power from fuse L/W - motor negative to fan control amp (and off to HVAC pin19) OR/B - PWM signal (from HVAC pin20) B --  ground
    • Yep, if you are applying filler it sounds like there is something wrong with the body lol. Safe to assume there is going to be a lot of sanding going on if your still applying fillers.  Picture a perfect bare metal panel, smooth as glass. You lay down your primer, it's perfect. (why are you going to sand it?) You lay down the colour and clear, it's perfect. No sanding at all took place and you've got a perfectly finished panel.  You won't be chasing your tail, sounds like you were prepping to start laying filler. If your happy with the body after the sanding, there is some bare metal exposed and some areas with primer, no issues at all, start laying the filler. You are safe to lay filler on bare metal or primer (of course check your technical data sheet as usual for what your filler is happy to adhere to).  This isn't a 100% correct statement. There is primer that is happy to adhere to smooth bare metal. There are fillers that are happy to adhere to smooth bare metal. Just make sure you're using the right materials for the job.  Typically if you are using filler, you would go primer, colour and clear. I've never seen any instances before where someone has laid colour over body filler (maybe this happens, but I haven't seen it before). So your plan sounds pretty normal to me.
    • I don't think there's any way someone is push starting this car.. I honestly can barely move it, and moving it and steering it is just flat out not possible. I'm sure it is, but needs a bigger man than me. I have a refurbished starter now. The starter man was quite clear and consise showing me how nothing inside a starter really should contribute to slow cranking, and turned out that for the most part... my starter was entirely fine. Still, some of the wear items were replaced and luckily it didn't show any signs of getting too hot, being unfit for use, etc. Which is 'good'. I also noticed the starter definitely sounded different, which is a bit odd considering nothing should have really changed there.... Removed and refit, and we'll pretend one of the manifold bolts didn't fully tighten up and is only "pretty" tight. GM only wants 18ft/lb anyway. I also found a way to properly get my analog wideband reading very slightly leaner than the serial wideband. There's Greg related reasons for this. The serial output is the absolute source of truth, but it is a total asshole to actually stay connected and needs a laptop. The analog input does not, and works with standalone datalogging. Previously the analog input read slightly richer, but if I am aiming at 12.7 I do not want one of the widebands to be saying 12.7 when the source of truth is 13.0. Now the source of truth will be 12.65 and the Analog Wideband will read 12.7. So when I tune to 12.7 it'll be ever so slightly safer. While messing with all of this and idling extensively I can confirm my car seems to restart better while hot now. I did add an old Skyline battery cable between the head and the body though, though now I really realise I should have chosen the frame. Maybe that's a future job. The internet would have you believe that this is caused by bad grounds. In finding out where my grounds actually were I found out the engine bay battery post actually goes to the engine, as well as a seperate one (from the post) to the body of the car. So now there's a third one making the Grounding Triangle which is now a thing. I also from extensive idling have this graph. Temperature (°C) Voltage (V) 85 1.59 80 1.74 75 1.94 70 2.1 65 2.33 60 2.56 55 2.78 50 2.98 45 3.23 40 3.51 35 3.75 30 4.00   Plotted it looks like this. Which is actually... pretty linear? I have not actually put the formula into HPTuners. I will have to re-engage brain and/or re-engage the people who wanted more data to magically do it for me. Tune should be good for the 30th!
