Dear Seniors

I just got my R33 GTST and am intending to convert it from AT to MT by December.

I am also going to tune up the car to a Drift Ready state maintaining street drivability.

I have the intention to do the following in due course after my MT and Exhaust initial mod and am looking at advice on Viability and availability:

1. Handling - the standard stuff like Coil over, Tower Bars and ARB. Looking for recommendations. Plus Advice if member braces are required?

2. Handling - Looking for advice if it is advicable to remove HICAS. I am looking to change my steering to one with quick release BOSS but can give that up if HICAS is more recommended.

3. Turbo - I am thinking of a Garette GT0376 or similar (Prefer Ball Bearing so the IHI comparable might be a good alternative) Looking at 1.2bar Boost Max... Any Engine mods required or recommended? Stut bolts? Pistons and Con Rods? Actually I might lower the boost if i need to take the engine apart.

4. Intercooler - the natural thing with Turbo would be a totally trick FMIC... Please recommend...

5. Auxillary parts - Fuel Injectors, Surge Tanks, External Pumps...

6. Most important part - The Brains!!! What ECU is popular here? Where can I get competent and affordable tuners? Where is a good hub dyno that wun cost me an arm or a leg? I am familiar with most modern ECUs like MoTec, Power FC, and F Con V Pro... I am unable to touch Motec and F Con due to the large amount of wiring works, Power FC due to computer connector... So I'll probably need someone to install and tune...

If you just got the car I recommend you do the manual conv and then work on the handling side of things.

IMO no point in boosting the power until you know how to drift it, otherwise you just play tag with the walls. I have a friend who has just started drifting... his starter car is an R32 with an RB20E which is perfect. Simple mods will be fine, FMIC, pod filter, new brake pads/fluid are good too and some decent suspension.

If the 33 runs electronic HICAS you can remove the steering rack and replace it with a lock bar. Some places sell collars that will lock the steering rack but you're better off replacing the whole thing with a lock bar.

Mate, if your free tomorrow night head up to the track for the drift prac that's on.

If you ask for the drift trainer named Marc the officials can point you in my direction and you can get an idea of the basics from there.

As mentioned above leave the power mods for now, make the car drive right and sto right then move onto that stuff. I would also add a fixed back seat to the list for one of your first mods, it makes a bigger difference than you would think!

I was at the back section of the track all night and yeah pretty busy up there. We had about 15 cars just in the training area!

I happen to also notice Barbagallo Drift Assault on 30 September and 1 October... I'll be hopping by in the arvo on 30 September but I'll have to miss 1 October as I have a class test going on that day...

You want to drift - sell it, buy a 32

You are talking about spending a lot of money, those parts aren't cheap, then add in labour

If it needs to be a 33, see how much a manual costs, compare the cost to what you will be paying (gearbox, shifter, decent clutch, pedal boxes and pedals, master and slave cylinder - prob going to cost you 3k or more in parts

But a 32 is much much better for sliding than a 33, more fun and cheaper

Just my opinion anyways (havin owned both and drifted both)

    • I replaced the whole clutch line with the chase bays braided hose, I think it removes that loop, is it the short hose that comes immediately off the slave or is there a drawing in the manual to find what you’re referring to? It was just re-bled when I upgraded to the nismo slave, old slave worked fine but I thought that might help, didn’t change a thing. It’s like the first half of the pedal is pushing air and then when it finally actuates the master the friction zone is tiny. Makes it practically impossible to launch the car
    • Yep, that was one of the things we learned fast in the past with our MX5. When you drive with the top down, you are effectively standing out in the sun, 100% of the time, and not getting in any shade (because roads aren't shaded generally!). Just like standing out in the middle of a field on a sunny 27C day is a bit of a bad plan, so is sitting in a MX5 without sun protection.
    • I also just ordered some Frankenstein bolts and side mounts to fit a hard top Just in case I do find one, basically so it doesn't need to be fixed to the car with only the front latch.......and then gaffa tape to keep it in place for the RTN journey from wherever I get it
    • If your temps are fine now, you probably won't have any issues with where your vents are as they don't look right up at the windscreens high pressure area, so any differences when giving it the beans for extended happy laps would be minimal, but, they should vent heaps when stuck in traffic  Much like how that reverse cowl on my SS let "visible" heat out when stationary, but, because it was basically at the windscreen my coolant temps on the Hwy actually raised because air was being fed into it at speed (110kph), to only come back down to around 90° when I got off the Hwy And your 100% correct about the NC currently not needing vents, but, if I was to add a turbo, and a oil cooler and intercooler in front of the condenserand radiator, and then take it to the track???? It is apparently a recommend requirement if I don't want to worry about coolant or oil temp issues, but, any of the above are possible scenarios, over time As it sits now, with the triple pass radiator and stock air conditioning system, I have absolutely no issues with either temps or air conditioning efficiency, I've been basically daily driving thie car for the last month, both on the Hwy, and peak hour, bumper to bumper traffic, but, that's pretty much expected from basically a standard engine  Talking about no issues daily driving, it was 39° the other day and I was sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on the M5 and then M7, with the top down, and with the air conditioning blowing nice cold air on my feet, balls, and face, well, there was one issue, my head and arms got pretty sun burnt Note to self: leave a hat and sunscreen in the car for such days 🤣
    • I would agree, unless you need something specific to the HV motor/battery side repaired or investigated, any mechanic will be able to perform normal services, but if you prefer, maybe look for a mechanic who regularly services/repairs Nissans, the VQ engines are pretty common in the Nissan lineup.  Sorry, I can't make any suggestions, I don't live in Vic.
