I run 285/35/19 all round on my 34, wheels are 19x10.5+12. Also got HKS Hipermax III Sport 09spec coilovers and I only have rubbing at full lock.

Next set will be 285/30/19, they would be perfect size and wouldn't touch the inner palstic guard

Ive got 19 x 10.5 +12 w/ 275's all round. As alot of the guys have already said the fronts rub on full lock with a standard height Vspec and Ive also removed the weather shields (is this what their called? Basically the skin lining inside the guard that protects the BOV's from mother nature and her wrath).

Either way they look tough and perfect R34 GTR combination for the street, 18's are way too small and get swallowed up by the huge R34 guards. Racing different story though..

That's why you get 18s and lower it so it doesn't look like a tractor! Fill the guards nicely then with the right wheel combo and improve the handling and everything else.

Agreed. I would have gone down this path if my driveway allowed my car to be any lower which unfortunately it doesnt.

The rear doesnt sit too bad at all its the front that looks abit high. For those with front diffusers they know all too well how hard it is to keep them in perfect condition even at standard height with our sub-par roads and driveways.

The skirts and rear pods aid it greatly in making it look better at standard height otherwise it would look like absolute crap imo.

Later this week i'll get a shot of a lowered 34R with my old SA90s (18x10.5 with 285).

It looks very tough.

Haha I see plenty of tough lowered 34R's in the Photography thread on a regular basis :P Chuck it up though its not often you see a 34R going away from the conventional TE's and doing something different lol

Having said that, what brand are your 275/35? as one 275 30 may be the same size as anotehr brands 275 35 or 285 30 etc..

Hey Anthony, can you please send me pictures of your wheels and where it rubs. I'm looking at getting the same wheels but with +12 offset and dont know if its only going to compound my problem. What made you go for the 35 profile also?

and reading through the thread today was very interesting.. didnt realise the tyre size i was reccomended to use for my wheels are the wrong size.. not happy! i really wish i had more time when i bought the car (had to get new wheels and tyres on there straight away) to do this reasearch!

im now looking to see if 285/30 will fit nicely with my 19x10.5+22 rims, as its not as common offseet as the +12/15s etc.. from what i could see on the car this afternoon the rubbing is only happening on the outside face of the tyre (need to check this further though), therefore my +22 offset should give me an extra 1cm to play with over the guys running 19x10.5+12, if its rubbing on the inside face though i could be in trouble, as my wheels site in further etc... and then using the below calculator, running 285/30s will bring back to stock rolling dia, and also give me an additional 1cm to play with over my current tyres.

Dont really want more stretch than i currently have if i can avoid it runninng the 275/30 etc...

Ali they're NITTO INVOS - 275/35/19. Sidewall is chunky as hell, didn't realise until I saw them fitted :/... they also rub the inner guard like hell, didn't realise until i drove out of Bob Jane *double :/ *

Anthony I was also given the wrong advice by an unnamed 'reputable' wheel shop in Melbourne, the owner of which insisted a 30 profile was too small for my rims and car.....

First of all a 275/35 is a dumb size, there is no other way to put it. It's so wrong it's not funny...

Anyway you need a 275/30 - then you get an extra ~1cm to play with. It's MUCH closer to stock diameter which will stop your speedo being "too" far out. With a 35 profile tyre it'd be so far out it'd be ridiculous.

Either way you cannot have both (10" rim and a 275/35) if you want it remotely close to lowered.

You want lower you have to go with a 275/30.

OR

Going back to a 265/30 on a 9.5 and it's over 1cm and almost the same diameter as factory - which is what most people do

Ok, just to clear a few things up. I've been doing a tonne of research, speaking to a few wheel & tyre shops, and also test fitted a few rim and tyre combos, and as it turns out, when replacing the stock R34 GTR wheels with aftermarket 19" ones, the 275/35 tyre combo is actually the CORRECT size to go for. The rolling diameter is almost identical to the stock diameter (literally only 0.4% difference), which means that the speedo readings will be pretty much spot on, not way out as you claimed they'd be. The only problem with the 275/35 combo on 19s is the width of the wheel causing rubbing on the inner plastic gaurds, so to avoid this problem you need to go down to a 265/35, but then the diameter becomes marginally smaller (but still within recommended limits), and the major problem is availability of tyres as this is a very RARE size, which has only really been used/manufactured in recent years on some European cars.

Whether or not it effects rubbing but rolling circumference of the tyre is too big for your car. Buy the correct size tyres FFS.

Now for 275/30, the rolling diameter becomes way too small (it's 4.4% off factory rolling diameter). So this in fact is the incorrect size. The ride becomes bumpy as hell, rims get very easily damaged, cars (which are already low) become lower, police break balls even more, BUT, the wheels at the front just clear the inner gaurds, and I mean just (only by a few mm).

Some people suggested I pull the inner plastic gaurd out, others said cut a hole in it where it rubs, and others said use a heat gun to remould the gaurd - I wasn't too favourable with any of these as I didn't want to bastardise my beloved BNR34. So in my experience and after my dramas, my advice to all R34 GTR owners is stick to a nice set of 18s and go for a tyre size of either 265/35, 265/40, or 275/35 :)

Michael, what size tyre are you basing your stock R34 calculation on?

stock is a 245 40 18 with overall diameter of 653mm.

275 30 19 is -5mm overall diameter under, approx 0.77% difference

275 35 19 is 22mm over with 3.37% difference.

According to RTA/RMS you are allowed 15mm difference +/- in diameter so the 275 30 is legal and the 275 35 is not, plus as you said the 275 30 clears and the 275 35 does not.

Hope this helps clear any confusion.

EDIT: forgot to add that the -/+ 15mm is for NSW, not sure on VIC standard for diameter and tyre sizing.

yep changed my 275/35/19 tyres to 275/30 on the weekend.. scrubbing issues are pretty much non existent..

the main thing with scrubbing issues on 34Rs are width.. the wider and more aggresive offset you have, you need to drop under stock rolling dia to avoid scrubbing issues etc.. thats how some of the guys running 18x10.5 can get away with 285 wide tyres.. there rolling dia is around 630 with a 30 profile..

heres a compare between mine and your suggested 265/35 size.. still think you would have issues...

if you went 265/30 though im sure you would deffinately not have any issues....

Ali, those calculations were based on the standard tyre size being 245/45R18. I assumed these were the OEM tyre size as my car was complianced with these, but just realised that you are in fact correct, the OEM size is actually 245/40R18. My apologies !! And I think in Melbourne you are allowed a difference of 3% in rolling diameter.

    • Yes.  The only scenario I can imagine when the answer isn't yes, is if you drive like there is highway patrol behind you at all times.  If your car currently runs, enjoy it and keep saving. Better costs more, keep saving until you can budget the better ECU. It's worth it.  Nope. Plenty of us making >300kw on unopened motors. Mine is unopened and makes about 350kw if I turn everything up, its fine (lots of caveats here, how the car will be used/abused, how long you expect the engine to last between rebuilds, how has the engine been maintained prior to coming into your ownership, etc etc).

Also, More info regarding suspension, the rear upper camber arms were used to get the camber back to i believe around -0.5 ~ -1 degree (@ Road and Race in Rydalmere), I forgot the exact figure, but ALOT less camber than what it came originally which was like -2.5degrees. Are the traction arms still recommended? The bilsteins from SydneyKid, they've got 400lb/in fronts & 275/in in the rear, revalved to his specs. Intercooler, I'm just having a look at some on Rakuten.jp and some other japanese sites. Might get something from back there, GReddy, Blitz or HPI, all crossflow. Looking at roughly $450-$500 AUD + shipping... Theres not many choices except that chinese branded Justjap unless you go for blitz return flow. Yeah, only downside with Haltech is the price ahhaha, so expensive, and with all the sensors if I go that route... $$$$$ yeesh. Are headstuds/gaskets needed for <300akw?
