Hi there

Looking at buying a Skyline v35 350GT. It's a premium model (pearl white). Now the Bose system has been replaced and a single din Clarion (model number eludes me atm) in it's place. Now what bothers me is that the button for the controlling the dual aircon has been changed ie it's no longer there.

I know that the Bose systems are well known for breaking/jamming and it's not uncommon for a different player to be there in it's place but some searching on this site has provided info advising that it's not just as simple as whacking in replacement as the aircon etc are all connected to the Bose interface which is a pain in the freckle.

Now my question.... is it easy enough to rip out the current Clarion unit and replace it with a double din unit that is correctly interfaced so I can get my dual aircon controls back and how much would I be looking at $$$ wise (to put a Kenwood unit in like sheldon2369's on this site) and is there a reliable person in Adelaide who knows his stuff where Skylines are concerned to do this sort of thing? Are there any warning signs that I should be aware of.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

J

I would assume, if you already have a single DIN head unit in place, then it must have the double DIN facia, as you can't install a standard head unit with the original factory facia.

If you can get your hands on a facia that has the 'dual' button for the aircon, you can swap the button on to the double DIN facia you currently have.

You would have to get a whole new AC control module that has the 'dual' mode button in it.

Since the conversion to an aftermarket head unit is already done, you wont have to worry about the stereo interfacing with the AC controls, they have been separated already.

Just rip out the existing stereo and fit what you want.

Hi there

Thanks for the quick replies. pv35gt8 There is a space there for the dual aircon button so I'm not entirely sure why it would have been disabled...unless it was damaged putting in the replacement head unit?

So pv35gt8 you reckon I can just buy a double din unit and replace the clarion thats there with no issues? I'd like the dual aircon feature but not if it'll cost an arm and a leg to correct....my wife or passenger will just have to live with 23c ;-)

Thanks again for the advise.

Cheers

All of the replacement air con setups only have single zone a/c (no idea why). Basically every dual din kit comes with the dual zones button missing. Yours is not broken - that is just how they come. I have read of people desoldering the circuitry off an integrated Bose a/c unit and putting on the double din a/c controls, but it is a pita and not a straightforward job (not to mention even broken double din Bose units runs at $500+ if you can find one).

Just live with single zone - seriously dual zone is wank factor and the amount of time you REALLY need it is almost zero.

John at Marvey Tech (at Modbury North) is an SAU:SA Club sponsor (if you are interested on becoming a club member once you buy your V35), and he has worked on mine and at least 2 other V35s that I know of.

What a co-incidence - this came up on ebay today:

No, it isn't mine & I have nothing to do with it, just happened to see it there. It looks to have the dual a/c button though.

BTW, what does John at Marvey tech specialise in? The business name doesn't give much away.

Hi guys

Thanks again for your replies. Sorry pv35gt8 but the attached pic was to small for me to see it clearly. I did save and enlarge the pic but the quality deteriorated to the point of no return. I think from memory (I don't have the car yet as the sale is subject to my mechanic checking it out) it's a blank plate.

Thanks for your honesty Nightcrawler I thought as much but it always helps when discussing & nego price ;) if something isn't what it's supposed to be. I guess if you're purchasing a "premium" then you want those features....but I know exactly where you are coming from. Also, thanks for the info on Marvey Tech I'll check this out further. It's nice to have something on my side of town for once (well sort of as I live in the hills). I would deffo be interested in joing the club and becoming a member. It's a great way to learn (I'm a noob but a quick learner  ) from people who have the same passion for the v35 as I do....learn how to mod my car etc. Also, I just found out that you get an insurance discount if you join a club & attend shows etc.

I'm assuming from the advise that getting the dual aircon back is going to be more problematic than it's worth. So would I be able to rip the Clarion out and pop something like this in? http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/car-sound/car-dvd/kenwood-ddx4031bt-double-din-monitor-with-bluetooth-receiver/670271 I'm assuming that putting a new head unit in it save me having to purchase a band expander. Any other suggests would be appreciated.

Cheers

Wow. Thanks for that link GeeDod. So Nightcrawler & pv35gt8 could I purchase what GeeDod posted without many dramas? I don't want to purchase something that frankly isn't worth the $$$ or hassle as I'd want to get rid of the Bose system anyway as they're to problematic for relatively poor sound quality (from what I've read and in all honesty surprised me)

Cheers

Perhaps the Series1 controls are different??. But the S2 double DIN facias are avaiable with or without the dual button. Swapping the S2 dual button onto a panel that doesn't have it, is about a 5 minute job if you are handy with a soldering iron.. it simply a matter of unsoldering the momentry switch from the donar board and soldering it into the new board.. then swapping the actual facia item.

As Nightcrawler said.. dual zone climate control is just a gimick that you never use.. but I do understand the desire to have it working, if your car comes with it..

I can also help you if you need a hand. Ive pulled quite a few m/v35 dashes apart. Like everyone said you dont need the dual zone button. Ive never heard of anyone wanting to go back to the old system. Put a decent 7in screen in there

In response to Nightcrawler, the Metra fascia comes with the dual mode button.

And who started this CRAP about premium and non-premium, so far from what I can see you start with the base model and then option it out at the dealership.

The only way to get a Bose system was to buy the premium model.. you can't option the base model with a Bose stereo. However, most other 'premium' items can be optioned on a base model. Eg, dual zone climate - steering wheel audio controls, etc.

In response to Nightcrawler, the Metra fascia comes with the dual mode button.

Ah yeah, you are correct. But no-one in the history of the universe would want a dodgy non-oem climate control with dodgy rubber buttons. According to all sources the Metra kits only work for a VERY limited amount of time ....

Heard nothing but bad things about the Metra kit, meant to be rubbish. Dual Climate control is, as stated before, an extra that you will rarely use unless you have a wigney girlfriend/boyfriend with you 24/7 that wants their own special temperature..

Yeah my wife ranted on and on when I told her I was removing dual zone to fit the dual din kit, but hasn't even mentioned it once since/noticed it missing in nearly 3 years ....

    • Sadly I can confirm if you are actually seeking to drift, you will quite easily spin up one wheel. Even if you're going in a straight line. I am not entirely sure of the metrics/terminology here but there's only a certain amount that the helical will actually spin both wheels. I've seen it on video with my own car where two lines of smoke switch over to just one after you really get in to it. Unlike with a clutch diff where you can keep your foot planted until the car regains grip, in my experience with the helical you want to be utilizing traction control allowing LIMITED slip or lifting (partially) when you start to spin up both tyres with a Nissan helical. Which makes them pretty sub optimal for drifting duty. That said... this is probably a helical on numbers alone. Just put the Kazz in
    • Let's just fix the problem by f**king the rest of the gearbox.
    • Unlikely, as per Greg's post. This is not helical diff behaviour unless one wheel is up off the ground. Shimming what? You don't "shim" a mechanical LSD. Probably not in the sense that you have heard of people "shimming" a diff. And the process that Nissan f**kwits call "shimming" a diff involves super-preloading a VLSD cartridge against the side of the diff to create a friction/wear point (in a place that it wasn't supposed to have one) to make the sloppy, useless, viscous diff into a hybrid viscous/mech abortion. In case it isn't clear, I consider the process to be stupid. Nike.
