Hey all,

Not sure if this belongs in the drivetrain section or here but I thought because changing diff oil is general maintenance here would work.

I am going to do my gearbox and diff oil and while looking on here for suggestions for what oils to use I came across a few threads saying there was a difference in the LSD's for series 1 and 2 for the R34 GTT's.

I thought they all had helical LSD but a couple of threads I came across said the series 1 had a viscous LSD.

So confused right now as I am finding conflicting information.

I guess I really have 2 questions.

1. Can anyone confirm if a 1999 manual R34 GTT uses a helical or viscous LSD?

2. What would be the best oils to use for each diff?

I was going to use Motul Gear 300 for moth gearbox and diff but I

l'll hold off on buying as much as I was going to if the diff needs a different oil.

Cheers,

Andy

A series 1 GTT has a Viscous diff. Only the series 2 manuals came out with the Helical diff's.

The series 2 auto's also used a Viscous diff.

From memory i used Nulon 85W-140 limited slip diff oil in my series 1 last year.

how to tell the difference between viscous an helical?

I've been told that if you turn one wheel, the other should turn in the opposite direction (shits fkd up I know). Haven't tried it for myself though.

From memory the Helical will act like an open diff, so if you turn one wheel the other will turn the opposite direction. If you turn the wheels on a viscous diff they should turn the same direction. I also have not tested this theory.

The other way is check the code on the diff, a viscous is a R200V I think
