Hey all,

I have a few thermofans left over from previous project cars and I'm after advice on which fan(s) are best suited to an R32 GTR.

I have:

-Spal 16" skew blade puller, is about 85mm thick where motor is.

-Or 2x Spal 12" skew blade pullers.

Just after some confirmation on which setup I should keep before I list on ebay.

Cheers.

just search their cfm rating.

Odds on there wouldnt be much in it. So it would otherwise lead to what would be easier to fit (properly) with an associated shroud and thermoswitch n relay etc...

Iv got twin 12" thermos on a 52mm radiator + shroud n i had to mod the fan n the power steering pipe a bit so that it would all fit without interference.

A smaller radiator would be no issue tho. But if you were going to go this size id reccomend going for the big single.

hehehe, in skylines it all comes back to the big single or twins debate doesnt it... :P

It's hard to convince people that

really? i thought it was the other way around?

even as a thermofan user id agree that the stock fan does move more than enough air, also it is self regulating on how hard it 'pulls' based on the temps encountered.

The advantage of thermofans is that they dont run all the time and therefore take power from the motor at all times like the stock fan. In fact with my 52mm alloy radiator the thermofans dont even come on in the winter months unless i get into stop start traffic. Even then they only come on for about 90-120 seconds per cycle.

Also that the old clutch fans are often wearing out n becoming unreliable. Therefore alternatives are worh considering.

the power lost by a clutch fan is bugger all, especially since it only engages fully at higher temps. thermo fans don't have a direct drag on the motor, but they increase the load on the alternator, which puts more load on the engine. so they aren't a free power mod as some people believe.

a big fan draws more air than a small fan as it's the tips of the fan that draw the most air as they are travelling faster than the middle of the fan (same rpm, but they travel a further distance). plenty of cars with thermo fans run 2 fans as it allows them to have different stages of cooling. for example, in some cars, in normal conditions/temps, one fan is used for engine cooling, while the other will come on when the air con is turned on.

as for looking for alternatives, sure you could look at fitting thermos, or you could just buy a new clutch for the fan.

personally, if i was going to run a thermo setup, i'd just use the factory setup off another car, and trim the shrouds as need be. i'd be looking at something off a late model falcon, magna or of a smaller fwd car such as a pulsar, corolla, etc. i'd just find something with a similar sized radiator and go from there.
