It all depends on what you think is important. R33s have electric HICAS, so there is no extra bullshit equipment (hydraulic solenoids and lines) to get rid of like there is on R32s. So the minimal approach of just fitting a bar on an R33 is enough to get rid of the part that you really really want to get rid of.

The problems are that;

  1. If you leave the tie rods and tie rod ends in place then you are leaving half the places where slop in the HICAS system happens. This is compulsory if you just fit a bar.
  2. Lockbars are not road legal. They are considered to be "modification of a steering system" and unless yours is signed off by an engineer it is defectable.

There are better locking systems that include collars to get rid of slop. There are better ones that do not use a bar at all, but bolt on extra brackets and replace the tie rods and ends with toe control arms akin to what you have on a non-HICAS subframe. This is what I would fit if I was going to just fit stuff on. But what I actually did to my R32 was replace the rear subframe with a non-HICAS one, pull out all the hydraulic crap. The rear of the car looks 100% factory, so even though I have "modified steering system" it doesn't look like it, so I will not likely get defected for it even with the most Nazi cop/inspector. My way cost a lot of money though, because I had to buy the subframe and having the whole back end of the car apart was seen as an opportunity to rebush EVERYTHING.

cheers

GTSBoy nailed it, do it properly, too much slop in the ball joints.

Get a non-HICAS subframe from an S14, replace the balls joints in the knuckles with bushes (SuperPro SPF1638K) and run adjustable toe arms.

Hey, I didn't see you were in the Carib. Cool.

Of course you can buy new tie rod ends (don't need to replace the rods themselves), but it's not worth it. If you're going to buy new rod ends, you might as well buy stuff to get rid of the rod ends. Something like this http://www.nengun.com/midori-seibi/hicas-canceller or this http://www.nengun.com/nagisa-auto/hicas-cancel-rod are smarter.
