Roy
Hi folks. After 15 years of using motorcycle helmets in the next few months I am going to be buying my first proper race helmet. I have all but made my mind up on the helmet, mostly driven by pricing. I really, really want a certain colour scheme but dont want to pay the $1500 I was quoted. Does anyone have any experience with competent air brush artists able to paint helmets are a good price? blackrex
Try talking to some places that do vinyl wrapping Roy, most of them can do the designs and transfer them onto the helmet quite easily, and I would say for a lot less. Roy
How is a vinyl wrapped helmet going to reveal damage to the helmet? Doesnt that fly in the face of helmet condition inspection 101? Duncan
there is definately an issue around helmets and paint flamability too...you need a specialist helmet painter. have you considered just treating it as a helmet, and just wearing it? blackrex
Vinyl wrapping a new helmet will help protect it from minor scratches, I have seen drivers who have damaged their helmets get the airbrush guy to touch up the damage so that it is not visible to the naked eye as well. CAMS Regs: Schedule G; 4.3.d Decoration Decoration of helmets is potentially dangerous, and members are warned of the hazard of using paint on approved helmets. Paint, stickers and transfers, or surface treatments can react with helmet shell material and affect its protective capacity; therefore, where a manufacturer provides guidelines or restrictions on the painting or decoration of helmets, these must be followed, using only paint or surface treatment specified by them (eg, air drying acrylic, polyurethane enamel or others) and preferably a painter having their approval. This is particularly important for injection-moulded shells which are not usually suitable for painting. The shell being painted should be efficiently masked as paint penetrating the interior can affect the performance of the helmet liner. Paints requiring heat curing should not be used and any process should not exceed the maximum temperature of conditioning of the helmet in the standard to which it is approved. The manufacturer’s instructions should also be consulted for any considerations on the use of stickers and transfers. DJRIFT
Dooooo it then also paint the wheels on your car black/yellow. Haha The guy who vynal wrapped mine and bens cars paints or stickers ( not sure which) Marcus Ambrose helmets. It's very common to see v8 drivers with a stack of custom painted helmets but they tend to only use them a few times. I could go see the bloke here in town and get you a price as I've been thinking of doing similar.
