hey I'm Joe.

originally from Wellington, NZ, but have lived in SE Melb for 7 years now. pretty new to the whole SAU scene, and fairly new to the mechanical side of vehicles in general (I can change a tyre, check the oil, do an oil change and other simple shit, but knowledge doesn't extent much past that point!)

prior to the discovery of this wonderful website, I spent most of my time playing video games competitively, namely World of Warcraft. I played in two guilds that are fairly reputable, vodka and Adept. Throughout my time playing WoW I met some genuinely amazing people who I keep in contact with to date, however after many years of slaying internet dragons and feeling the adrenaline rush of up to 40 other people, I decided to throw it in the towel and stop relying on my rich rents to get shit done.

I recently purchased my first car, a 98 n/a R34 sedan, however I've been driving unlicensed for the last 4 years (never been pulled up, breath tested once, was not asked for licence); I have zero doubts that I'll be pulled up and fined for something because, well, that's how it works right? -_-

EXTREMELY fond of Reggae music, love that shit. Mad respect for Bob Marley, Katchafire and the likes ~ recently saw Katchafire live at The Forum in Melbourne, was honestly speechless and absolutely drowned myself in the music. I'm also into rap/rnb/soul ~ drake/john legend/otis redding/pusha T, could list heaps more but there's really no point, I'd be here all day.

Pretty eager to learn new shit (I work in Aged Care as a Lifestyle coordinator, with an emphasis on our alzheimer's and dementia residents!) and am open suggestions if anyone has any (in the event that you see one of my posts and think I am making a huge mistake), so yeah!

anyway hope to build some strong friendships and whatnot here, maybe attend a few social events and share a beer or something. thanks for reading.

Firstly, welcome.

secondly, without a license for 4 years?

seriously?

I recommend you get one, then enjoy your car legally.

apart from that, I'm sure you're already loving your car.

hope you find some useful info in these many pages.

I've had it for about 4 months now, but yeah I had been driving for 4yrs without it. Trust me, I agree with you 100%, feels like smoking medicinal marijuana.

    • Re read everything that has been written about this in this thread.. Let us know if you're still confused.
    • This would be a new pump with new gears. I'm just unclear on whether it's a good idea to run more oil pump flow if you don't actually need said flow. Oil level is set a minute or so after shutting off a warm engine so wouldn't the high RPM oil level in the sump end up lower all things equal? Plan is OEM clearances, main concern in my mind is whether the OEM pump can keep up with the flow requirements of any additional oil coolers.
    • Don't do what I did, use a 300000km old housing with billet gears. The old pump probably was clearanced with saw dust, Edward Lee's special engine treatment sauce and a good odo wind back. I had oil pressure issues, then replaces pump with new housing, new billet gears and 2x track day later binned a motor due to other oil related issues due to a previous engine builder. Long story short, buy a M2 or 3 or 4 N55/S55/S58 and enjoy life.
    • Yeah. "New pump" does not have to mean "massive pump".
    • Well, can you still get an OEM pump, and by the time you're buying a Nismo/N1 etc, just buy another aftermarket pump. It's better to have the pump able to flow more if its needed, than for your pressure to drop off. At any point in time, you're replacing the oil pump in a rebuild. Aftermarket pumps are likely going to be a better economical choice, and they don't have any negatives, even if they can flow more.   Also, when you're saying "replace the pump gears" are you meaning leave a 25+ year old housing in the engine with unknown wear, and just put new gears in? As that sounds silly to me, especially if you do have that minute amount of wear, that means your new pump gears now have a little bit more clearance beside them, which means, whelp, you may not get to build a lot of oil pressure or make a lot of flow.
