Hey all,

Off the top of my head, the series 2 GTTs began production in late 1999 and I may be very wrong. But usually people only say that 2000/2001 are the series 2, whereas if I'm right then SOME 1999 will also be series 2. I'm wanting to buy a series 2 so I've been looking around, and found this on gumtree (of all places...)

So first question, anybody seen this before/a member here (though doubt it)?

http://www.gumtree.c...oupe/1007170747

Secondly, can you guys help me out in identifying this as a S1 or S2 GTT? From what I can tell, I'd say it's a S1...but that is not very sure, and that is based on the information in this thread:

http://www.skylinesa...-1-vs-series-2/

and more specifically, this, link:

http://www.skylinesa...ttach_id=397938

I found a couple of other cars on gumtree (1999 or 2000) models which to compare to, and it's rather confusing...

The steering wheel on the BLACK car (the one I want) is seemingly single tone (black only - S1), but seems to have metal pedals (S2 - but could obviously have changed this easily), has silver seats (or is that dark grey? But doesn't seem very dark), also the engine cover is silver + red.

The comparisons I've made are mainly with this car which identifies itself as a 2000 hence S2.

http://www.gumtree.c...es-2/1006921795

This one from a dealer is a 2001 (and definitely a S2), is this what a stock S2 looks like (wheel, pedals etc):

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/homebush/cars/2001-nissan-skyline-coupe-gtt-turbo-/1005544206

and for more reference, this car identifies as a 1998, and the interior/dash looks exactly the same as the black one (first car posted)

http://www.gumtree.c...rice/1000393696

and this one is a 1999, but the steering wheel has the silver buttons (what are they?)

http://www.gumtree.c...aps-/1007927223

Any help would be appreciated guys!

I think late 99 R34 would be going into Series 2. A major give away is the two tone steering wheel. And sometimes the factory body kit that the series 2 have. But with that being said, its also easy to change those parts and putting it in a series 1. The black one your looking at is a series 1 if I'm not mistaken. The silver buttons on the steering wheel is factory head unit volume control from what I've been told. They're useless if you don't have the factory head unit, but then its useless in aus anyway. I start fiddling with them when I'm bored in traffic :)

I personally wouldn't get a series 2 because i don't like the two tone and dash look.

Also I've seen quite few late 99 built between July to August so it must be sometime after then. Perhaps someone could use FAST and check the VIN? I got nissan fast but i don't know how to sus out which series it is.

hey mate thanks for helping out, i think you're right the dash and steering wheel are the giveaways. I went and looked and found this (couldn't find it before but somehow came across it again today!)

http://www.computeroutpost.com.au/imports/select.asp?make=Nissan&model=Skyline

and this basically says that:

May 1998 - August 1999 was the first GTTs http://www.computeroutpost.com.au/imports/spec.asp?id=560

August 1999 - (August???) 2000 was a SECOND ROUND? http://www.computeroutpost.com.au/imports/spec.asp?id=549

August 2000 - 2001 was what we call 'series 2' http://www.computeroutpost.com.au/imports/spec.asp?id=533

What I don't understand is why there was something in the middle, I've never heard of that before! There doesn't seem to be changes in the specs listed for the first 2...yet there is a change in pricing.

I don't really think with R34 GTT that series 2 would justify the extra 2-3Ks. It all comes down to personal preference and finding the right person to pay the price. In all honesty, I personally think that R34 GT/T are worth no more than $13K if by private sale. any more than that they would be dreaming. But the average value of a R34 is between 13-17k since the importers slap a few grands on top and people selling them want to price it at that price so they lose less (if they buy from dealer) or they want to ride with the market value from the dealers. I picked up my first one for 11.5k, was a fair price where many would say it is cheap.

I personally don't really like the series 2 since I think they are kinda gay. Not much difference in performance, a change of interior aesthetics but the body is still the same, but with the more "everyday car" looking body kit. I don't like the 2 tone interior so I always tend to look at S1. Doesn't really matter until you go for a GTR I dont think.

Series 2 cars started build date late month 8/2000 , fast has f all info on them, my parts had 2001 date stamps and chassis is 9/2000 late month ( which is the end of model year for most car makers)but even the local nissan dealer cant find the parts # in fast for some of the options mine has??

Silver and black steering wheels

Silver not grey inserts on seats and doors( horrible material )

Titanium silver gauges

V spec alloy pedals

Surface mount electronics in some parts

different front bar , looks like a ford haha i hate mine

lower emmisions revision on engine

coupes have helical LSD

Basically r33 gtr brakes

outside airtemp A/C

a bunch of small options available

I have a list of other things from the original sales brochure

Series 2 cars are worth a bit more , and most would have less km

The prices are climbing again for good examples

Anywhere S1 -8,000 grand to series 2 2001 -25,000 grand for low km grade 4 or better

r33 gtr brakes would be brembos. series 2 DOES NOT have brembos. no revision on engine so emissions doesn't change. only an updated series 2 ECU a Bump in torque to 362 from 342 nm.

other changes

- Factory option of Pearl white/Bayside blue in coupe version.

The brakes are the same size as the brembos !! not brembos , summato brand

The cam profile is different for emissions

The IC is slightly bigger

super hard paint is available

Heated mirrors

Cold weather package

Side airbags option

different location of ac controls depending on trim levels

ricky - yeah, the prices are just kind of ridiculous for a lot of the GTTs I see, even if they're not in particularly good condition. I'm having trouble finding a picture comparison of the stock S1 v S2 body kit, but from what I've seen on and off, I actually like the S2 body kit more because it's more 'square' and i like my squares. hahaha

troy, mingy - so, with all the different stuff, is the S2 a better drive? Or for example, does it really matter if I intend to mod it to stage 1 soon or later?

so in essence, if i'm looking locally, all the cars could VARY a LOT because they could have originally had different options from factory?

Standard R34 Series 1:

Looks more of a mass market car.

R34 Series 1 Factory aero body kit (A.K.A Nismo body kit, altia body kit). This one is actually my car (before it got written off :(:

Looks more like what every R34 should look like.

My one there is just the aero body kit as in Front bar, side skirts and rear bar. Then there are the full aero body kit with the hideous "trolley" spoiler. DO NOT ever get this, it just looks hideous. But if you DO and decide to take it off, it's a 3 piece wing and the two vertical end pieces are bolted onto the rear quarter panel. If you take them off, it will have holes and you would need to get it welded and sprayed:

R34 Series 2 stock kit:

Looks like a Camry :\

ah thanks ricky. i have to agree the nismo kit looks sweet, ideally i'd like it on the car I buy without needing to install it myself (hard to find + expensive to install!). and yes that wing is HIDEOUS. absolutely discgusting.

I'm a little confused as you said "S1 = mass market car" = ugly in my interpretation, and then you said the s2 looks like a camry - so therefore you reckon both stock kits are ugly?

but TBH, I do like the S2 stock more, there's something about it.....sleeker than the S1 stock. oh that and also the S2 has xenons factory! cos I WANT xenons in my car and S1s didn't come with it so therefore it'd be illegal to install =( stupid laws

The series 2 is a more refined car , mostly because it was towards the end if the model run and they worked out some of the bugs

Front bar the nismo one looks best

Not camry mate , ford haha

Trolley wing is damn ugly so it the rear bar off that kit

One note the s2 front bar sits close to fmic compared to s1 bars , have to remove a fair bit of plastic for return flow type

The rear bar without skyline imprint bulge looks best for stock, looks similar to gtr bar

Seat material is better on s2 , the silver stains like a bastard with one drop of water even with scotchgaurd !! The black part is better cloth

Oh series 2 cars had garret branded turbos not nissan ? and gtr rods but not sure if earlier neo's had gtr rods or not? shame they didnt use forged pistons haha

Series 2 cars mostly have better stereo / ac facia if that matters to you ?

really both mod just fine , just the series 2 would have less km so watch the 100k service thats a big one , and bushings failing , front passenger side wheel bearings failing

Nissan dealers have very little info on series 2 finer details thru fast

Auto box tiptronic on series 2 is supposed to be better ? Nfi ?

Lots of mix and match body part come on fresh imports ! Drift damage? Crash ? Or just for looks who knows ?

Prob Cheaper to buy a s1 and use the extra for mods , body kit lol

No wings on gtt looks like a generic camry to me it downgrades the car looks imo

this has been posted up a few times, not the table referes to GT-t models rather than 25GT/GTV na variants

Series1vsSeries2.jpg

definitive features of series 2's are the

- white faced guages with orange back light (series 1 has dark grey faces with white illumination)

- 2 tone steering wheel and aluminium drilled pedals (shared with GTRs)

- slightly different material used for f & r seats (slightly softer and cloth-ier)

- front bar

features that are shared with series 1 and 2

- silver engine cover (early series 1's had silver with red lettering)

I have a series 1 25GT 4sp auto with the altia optioned kit myself, but if i had my time/budget again i'd try aim for a later model series 2 with the factory option kit and def go the 5sp manual for the GT-t's as the auto turbos seem to sell quite poorly if you're taking resale value into consideration

troy - awesome, thanks for that, that's exactly the kind of differences that i've been looking for, really hard to find any actual information like that apart from asking an actual owner! that's what it feels like to me too, S2 is more refined, and i like the LOOK of it more too. yes it might be cheaper to get an S1 but I'm actually fine with the normal S2 stock kit so if i can find one for the right price then i wont be looking to spend extra $$$ on a kit. that, and also it should 'technically' be 'newer' by a year or two haha - easily overridden by a thrasher.

danny - yep, seen that table and i've posted in that thread too. which one do you prefer (if you have either)?

Series 2 dont have white face gauges , titanium silver , I have mine for sale since nismo gauges installed now

If i get time I will scan a few of the sales brochures of s1 and s2 gtt cant post on iphones easy so need to dig my laptop out lol slacker i know haha

It would clear up the differences quickly

Series 2 hates , front bar is soft looking , but nothing a little carbon or black paint wouldnt fix

Fog lights help and so would a lower lip

hate silver inserts but even worse are the S1 inserts

Forgot s2 gets nicer floor mats with metal skyline logo and matrix thread pattern not embrodery logo. Mine are being redon with carbon fiber logo , made a mold of the steel one lol

Hate , sunroof hangs low for my height and is tiny size , cooks you in summer if you have the shield open , mine is 5% tint now and shield redone

The grey roof liner is cheap looking and gets dirty all by itself black microfiber suede looks heaps nicer now , under 50 bucks to do it

love the car except its a theft magnet and police

Knock on wood look but dont stop me , too old maybe haha

Buy a top alarm first day and insure it full value

cheers no rush with the sales brochures, I think I know how to tell the difference between the 2 series now without needing to consult anything! am i right in saying all the GTTs have sunroofs? freakin awesome....

i DEFINITELY plan to install every single piece of anti-theft necessary. i would be so so so crushed if someone stole my car (touchwood) hope it never happens. i'm saving up more money to specifically fund this addition hahaha.

now, i need to find a reasonably priced car.

Actually sun roof is actually very rare. More common in series 2 but have seen them on series 1. Also the aero kit is very rare to be on sale and when it does come up, it's gone before you say sold.
