Shorter cooler piping is a very marginal benefit. The idea that changing the total length of your cooler pipig will improve response or decrease "lag" in a really noticable way is a nice one to have in your mind, but that's about the extent of its connection to reality.

An increase in HP. Hmmm. Again, a nice idea, but given that it is only a handful of kW, and given that most front facing plenum designs (that replace the bottom half of the inlet manifold as well as the top) end up with shorter runners so that you actually lose some mid range, it isn't actually a big worthwhile benefit.

The only real benefits are that you get the cross over pipe away from the hot side of the engine, making it easier to fit a high mount turbo, and that you tidy up the engine bay a bit. But that tidying is really more aesthetic and provides a little better access to do work. It's not really a major improvement in how well the engine does what it is supposed to.

Sure, for trully massive HP builds, an FFP can be set up with big internal volume and so work better at full noise. But for most builds, it is barely worth the $$ and effort.

I think it comes down to your ultimate power goal and engine bay appearance goal. We all know the appearance is important to most people just as much as power.

I have the stock plenum and it looks like arse, but my goal was a punchy reliable 400rwhp. The stock plenum will do this and more with ease. I couldn't see the point spending at least $700+ for a plenum then more for all the fidly bits people dont acount for to only gain appearance gains.

If you want engine bay your proud of then id consider Plazmaman, they look nice and are the easiest to bolt up, and from most accounts retain the most response.

If your only after say 400rwhp then spend it on something else like suspension or brakes.

ok fair enough.

how about fmic, is it best buy a return flow kit like the ones that the piping go thought the same existing holes ?

and the a/c fan............. well i think its an a/c fan. the one that sits in front of the radiator. will that have to be removed ?

im sure their is a tread on it ? whats it called ??

In some respects, yes, it is better to use a turn flow cooler. That way you don't cut any holes in the inner guards. Non-original holes can get you in trouble with the defect nazis. Having said that, turn flow end tanks are probably not quite as efficient when it comes to pressure drop, and you can only fit a smaller core with turn flow than if you have straight through.

And you don't have to pull the air con fan out unless going for really thick cores.

pretty much a waste of time unless you have done every possible thing to your engine and turbo and are trying to squeeze every little bit out of it, sounds like you aren't in that position if you don't even have a fmic yet

if you're all worried about cutting a small hole inside the engine bay for a normal fmic setup you can get a return flow cooler

BTW, don't modify the standard plenum to move the TB, the runners are designed to receive air from top, center. If you move the throttle body to the front the air flow to each cylinder will be effected.

FFP's are nice but more or less unnecessary. I have one but its been more than a 'Bolt-on' affair. Hole cut, throttle cable mounts, extended wiring for sensors etc. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think you need a R33 IAC unit for most FFPs into 25neos.

ive been looking for the same for my car,i know im not going to gain alot of hp if any,or if the shorter cooler piping will make a difference.the main reason is to tidy the engine bay up as ill be running a top mount setup and dont want pipes running all over the hot side of the engine bay. Ive been reading through many forums trying to decide what the best option for a neo would be that would require the least amount of work for it to fit. alot of people run the greddy/freddy ffp and use an adaptor plate for the iac valve,im not a big fan of this and i have only found 1 other type of ffp that is made for the neo and fits the neo iac and pretty much all the stock parts will fit. Its sold on ebay and made by a company called PnT performance in thailand, i know this is starting to sound a bit questionable but from further investigation to their ffp on 2jz's (alot of reading through supra forums) all of the buyers were happy with the product and only a minor few requiring facing.

Thats what im going for anyways,they sell for about $699+$175postage, nethless to say i am also upgrading pretty much everything else so a ffp is waranted.

if your only looking for around the 400rwhp mark,you shouldnt need a ffp as many people have proven in the past with much higher hp.

Wouldn't worry about the head gasket and studs unless there is another reason for the head coming off?

I have seen the plenums you are talking about, they don't look to bad. Just remember if you have a FFP on a neo you will need a R33 TB or after market, and then if you want to retain your Nistune you will need it to have a Stagea image put into it to remove the TCS.

I have the standard plenum with a fabricated cross over pipe, not the prettiest, but i made 380rwhp @ 17psi with it, we ran out of time to push it more, but showed no signs of restricting anything.

Not quite true. Since that was the wisdom of the time, Matt and I found a number of the DTC switches could be used to turn off the TCS stuff. I actually do not know if it will prevent the strange fuel/boost cut thingo that was happening with R34 Nistunes when at very high TP, but it would be worth a try to do it this way before going to the Stagea image.

car was originally a non turbo auto converted to turbo manual. Never had tcs work,got rid of the tcs throttle body and have a r33 s2 which ive fitted the neo tps to. The pnt ffp use the standerd iac valve so no need to swap to an r33 item.

As for the nistune,im not sure what the boys at jaustech did when i had it installed as to what image is on it,either way it worked lol.

Im doing the head gasket as i might aswell do it now instead of it blowing later on and having to get it replaced (while most of the bits are off i might aswell replace it) studs i picked up for 200 and figured it was a worth while investment as you shouldnt reuse head bolts.

thats a nice setup neil,what turbo you have?

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways. 
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.

    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
